LOSEC 1. Name & class of drug – generic and trade name. GENERIC NAME: Omeprazole BRAND NAME: Losec, Prilosec CLASSIFICATION: Gastrointestinal agent, proton pump inhibitor 2. Dose range and routes for adult & geriatric client. PREPARATIONS: PO – 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg (capsules) DOSING:

gastroesophageal reflux, erosive esophagitis, duodenal ulcer: 20 mg once/d for 4-8 weeks Gastric ulcer: 20 mg bid for 4-8 weeks Hypersecretory disease: 60mg once/day, up to 120 mg tid Duodenal ulcer associated with H. pylori: 40 mg once/d for 14 d, in combination with clarithromycin 500 mg tid for 14 d.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS: suppresses gastric acid secretion relieving gastrointestinal distress and promoting ulcer healing USES: duodenal and gastric, gastroesophageal reflux disease, long term tx of pathologic hypersecretory conditions, multiple Endocrine adenomas and systemic matocytosis, in combination with clarithromycin to treat duodenal ulcers asso with Helicobacter pylori 4. Major side effects & drug interactions. DRUG INTERACTIONS: concomitant admin of diazepam and omeprazole may increase diazepam concentration. • Concomitant admin of phenytoin and omeprazole may increase phenytoin levels. • Concomitant admin of warfarin and omeprazole may increase warfarin levels. SIDE EFFECTS: headache, dizziness, fatigue, hematuria, proteinuria

Report any changes in urinary elimination, such as pain or discomfort when urinating, or blood in urine. Report severe diarrhea, med may need to be d/c.
