Napoleon Bonaparte During the French Revolution they needed a leader, and that leader was Napoleon Bonaparte. During the French Revolution Napoleon became the General and lead a couple of very successful campaigns. In 1799 he overthrew the government and installed himself as the first Consul. Only 5 years later he became the Emperor of the French. In the 1800s he turned the French against almost every major European country and was successful. Soon he controlled mostly all of Europe through his battles. He was doing great until his invasion of Russia in 1812 which ended his streak of winning and exiled him for a year. After this in 1813 France was invaded and he was exiled. After a year he returned and took over once again but only for a hundred days for his finally defeat was that at Waterloo of 1914. He had been known as the greatest commander of all time and was also know for the Napoleon Code which was the foundation of the modern French state. (170)
