TOUCH FOOTBALL TUTORIAL 2 NOTES
KEY TEACHING POINTS: Roll ball - Step, slam - Quick, low, fend (creating space using the roll ball skill) WARM UP: - Stacks of cones were set out prior to the start of class, students were then asked to set up their area. - Two different warm ups were used however only the first one was relevant for the lesson objectives of offensive strategies. - Activity one involves relevant skills for the lesson, involves dynamic stretches, gets students to switch on, increases heart rates and promotes motivation. Activity 1 – Step and score - LEST was organized first – students get into groups of 5 or 6, cones are set out by the students, the space is set out with the markers and the time is determined by the teacher. - Students stand on opposing sides of the square grid, one being an attacker and one a defender. The first students run forward, the one with the ball stepping and driving in the opposite direction and running towards the line to score a try without being touched. - Helps students to develop decision making skills, think about how they can trick their opponent and develop the physical skill of stepping, transferring their weight to the other leg and driving hard. Activity 2 – 3v2 keep it off - LEST was organized first – students remained in their groups, the equipment and space was already set out and the timing was determined by the teacher who said students would have 30 seconds per round and established that with the use of the whistle to start and stop. - The attacking team passes the ball between them while the defenders attempt to make touches to the attacker with the ball. Students make as many touches as possible in 30 seconds before rotating positions. - This activity is more focused on raising the heart rate and motivating students and involves little skill specificity and relevance.
ACTIVITIES: 15m roll ball – stage 1 intially - LEST was organized first – students remained in their groups, the students assist in adjusting the equipment and space that was already set out and the timing was determined by the teacher. - Students work in pairs in their group, one student taps the ball to their foot, runs 5 meters, slams the ball down and steps over it before running back and across while their partner picks up the ball and repeats. - KTP – slam, step, clear - Initial activity is stage 1 and performed in a closed environment - Progression = change to technique – add in the initiated touch - KTP – low, quick, fend off - Repeat a new, full demonstration before beginning the progression 3 on 1 initiating the touch – stage 2-3 (combination of skills and implementation of strategy) - LEST was organized first – students remain in their groups, the equipment and space remains the same and the time is determined by the teacher. - The 3-man drive technique is taught. - Students work in a group of 3 as attackers facing a defender. The students aim to score a try against the defender. Activity could begin with no defender to decrease the complexity. - Students aim to create space and move the ball down the grid to score a try. - Encourage students to begin thinking about and implementing offensive strategies. 3 on 1 pick and pop – stage 2-3 (combination of skills and implementation of strategy) - LEST was organized first – students remain in their groups, the equipment and space remains the same and the time is determined by the teacher. - A large portion of time is spent teaching prior to this activity as it is quite complex. - Teach the pick and pop by the second and third attackers. - Utilise the questioning of students to teach. - Long demonstration – two full rounds, pointing out key points during and after. - Beginning with no defender and without mentioning the dummy half. - Students practice the pick and pop, rotating through the positions. - A defender is introduced to increase the complexity of the drill. - Allow students enough time to develop the skill prior to mentioning the dummy half. - Once students are achieving success and have a good understanding of the pick and pop, the dummy half rule is introduced. - A new, full demonstration is done, explaining with pictures and words to help students comprehend the new rule. - Help students to understand the roles and responsibilities in the game, thinking about their physical build and strengths. - Students should aim to create space to score a try, utilizing the pick and pop and the dummy half. - This activity will likely need to be run for a long period of time or repeated in a second lesson in order for students to fully understand the pick and pop and dummy half.
5-meter game – stage 4 (modified game situation – smaller field) - LEST was organized first – students remain in their groups with each group combining with another to form 2 games of 2 teams, the equipment and space remains the same and the time is determined by the teacher. - A lengthy demonstration and explanation is used with one game demonstrating and the other two groups watching from the sideline. - Students sub on and off – either student directed or teacher directed however teacher directed rotations is ideal for most classes to ensure all students are participating equally. - KTP – pass and move back - Students aim to create a lead, draw a defender in and create a space for a try to be scored. - Dummy half rule is included however it can be played without if students do not yet properly understand or if it has not yet been taught. - The game will teach students when to tap the ball to their foot and when to use a roll ball as well as how to create space, make strategical decisions and effectively use their team mates to score a try.
