MusicLeader MusicLeader is a UK-wide Youth Music initiative and aims to provide access to training and professional development for music leaders at every stage of their career. Youth Music is a UK-wide charity set up in 1999 to provide high quality and diverse music-making opportunities for 0-18 year olds. It targets young people living in areas of social and economic need who might otherwise lack opportunity and predominantly supports activities which are held outside school hours. MusicLeader aims to support practitioners to develop their skills and knowledge in order to deliver the best possible music-making opportunities for children and young people. Who MusicLeader is aimed at MusicLeader is aimed at all music practitioners and project managers, from experienced professionals to complete beginners. The service supports those who are already delivering music-making activities and also those who are managing their delivery. Practitioners may include; music teachers, music service employees, music advanced skills teachers, community musicians, and musicians who also work in education. Project managers are those who are supporting the practitioners and managing the activity being delivered (in some cases this is one and the same person). This includes those project managers who specialise in working in the arts and music (e.g. music service managers, orchestral or venue education officers), but may also be other public sector employees who are increasingly employing musicians to deliver activity, which meets social and educational as well as musical aims, such as Early Years workers, Youth Workers, Youth Offending Team Managers. How MusicLeader operates MusicLeader operates through regional networks at ground level as well as the online resource; MusicLeader.net. The regional networks offer the following services: •

Information, advice and guidance.

Networking and skills development opportunities.

Support for music leaders to access professional development.

MusicLeader.net supports the regional networks through: •

A national/regional search facility of training courses and events.

Case studies, guidelines and news.

An online community of music leaders.

A directory of training providers and music makers.

Regional and national email updates.

What Youth Music hopes to achieve MusicLeader aims to support practitioners to develop their skills and knowledge in order to deliver the best possible music-making opportunities for children and young people.

By 2010 MusicLeader aims to have: •

11,000 music leaders networked

Enabled 1,100 new leaders to have entered the sector

Provided 2,500 music leaders with skills development opportunities

Why did MusicLeader come about? MusicLeader has been developed in response to a number of research reports commissioned by Youth Music. Their findings identified that music leaders needed greater access to relevant information as well as network and development opportunities. Click on the links below for further information on the research reports: Creating a Land with Music – the work, education, and training of professional musicians in the 21st Century - This report looks at the relationship between the changing needs of the music industry and the various training routes for composers, performers, leaders and teachers. http://www.youthmusic.org.uk/news/AR/ar2.jsp Opportunities in Youth Music Making - A practitioner guide to project and funding opportunities within youth, cultural, educational and social regeneration agencies. The report is addressed to musician practitioners, community/youth music organisations, music services, music teachers, schools, youth leaders and workers. Indeed, anyone who has an interest in delivering or hosting a music project with young people. By ‘young people’ we mean anyone from age 0 up to early twenties. Early years and preschool activities at one end and vocational or professional training initiatives at the other. http://www.youthmusic.org.uk/news/AR/AllTogetherNow.jsp Towards a Youth Music Makers’ Network - This report was carried out during 2003 by Sound Sense, the UK development agency for community music. The research looked at professional development opportunities across the youth service, music service and community music sectors and identified that there was a cost barrier for freelance musicians to take up professional development opportunities; that more networking opportunities were required to combat isolation and that the three sectors should consider marketing their opportunities to each other. http://www.youthmusic.org.uk/news/AR/YMMN.jsp Get involved with MusicLeader The easiest way to get involved with MusicLeader is to sign up for membership. This is reinforced in the standard Terms and Conditions of Employment, where it is also made clear that sexual or racial abuse or harassment are considered gross misconduct. Details of all posts are sent to the Disability Liaison Officer at local job centres, and the Company is committed to interview any suitably qualified candidates.
