INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA
THE BEST DEBATERS
INTER-MAHALLAH DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIP 2005/2006 For several years now, IIUM has made a tremendous impact in the area of debating and has gained worldwide recognition on its production of talented students with speaking capabilities. Previously, we have seen Melati Abdul Hamid being acknowledged as the world’s best orator in an international status competition which took place in Washington DC. The fact that she is a Muslim has certainly opened up eyes in Western countries to perceive Islam positively. Being supportive and appreciative of such speaking capabilities, the Speech and Interpersonal Enhancement Unit from STAD and representative committee from Mahallah ‘Ali have organised the first Inter-mahallah Debating Championship. The event was held from 18th 21st Feb.’06 and has included two categories of debating channel: one in English while the other in Arabic. Our mahallah of course, did not want to miss this opportunity. Four teams were sent for the English category and another two teams were sent for the Arabic category. Competition was really strong since other teams from different mahallat were also competent. PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS Assalâmu ‘alaikum wa rahmatu-llâhi wa barakâtuh. Lectures have ceased and now comes the time we all normally dread - the final examinations. This dread can be cured if one puts on an optimistic mind in their heads. Needless to say, we will all be working hard using our muscle brains to the utmost. Thus, my colleagues and I from the MRC would like to wish all students the very best in their final examinations. As a wrap-up remark for this semester, I would like to conclude that a lot has been going on. However, the most prevailent of all was the food price hike up phenomenon at our mahallah café. As a sign of disapproval, many students turned their backs against the café. In other words, there began the controversial boycott among students. Many doubted why such price should be increased when other cafés can maintain the same price.
In response to this issue, we have taken the matter to the attention of Ustaz Hamidon Abdul Hamid (Deputy Rector of Student Affairs & Alumni) and the Facilities, Foods, and Services Unit (FFSU). Following this, the café operator has reduced the price accordingly. It was noted by FFSU that the food prices at IIUM is comparatively lower than at any other universities in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Therefore, students can be at rest assured that the food prices here are monitored and regulated to meet students’ needs. To sum it all up, we have managed to conduct many programmes so far and we will be carrying out more programmes in the near future: an ‘English Camp’ in Mersing and a community service programme in Rompin. Lastly, don’t forget to check out. Again, good luck for your finals and have a happy vacation! MOHD AIZAT YAACOB President of MRC

Organised by MURC in collaboration with IIUM Swimming Club, the water sports event was held from 24th - 25th Feb.’06. It spurred a lively and energetic atmosphere throughout the day and even night! FROM ZERO TO HERO MURC TRAINING FOR TRAINERS (MT4T) As emphasised in any organisations, the role of each member is vital in order for them to achieve their visions and missions. Having everyone in the team to be well-coordinated will determine the success of the organisation in question. This was basically the aim of one programme conducted by MURC from 10th 12th Feb.‘06 at Institut Dato’ Sagor, Perak, where it was also co-organised by fellows of Mahallah ‘Uthman and officers from Institut Dato’ Sagor. Carried out under its catchy title, ‘MURC Training for Trainers’ or ‘MT4T’, the programme was designated to achieve several objectives. One of them was to develop the organisational skills among the committee members of MURC. Besides building up a good communication between the mainboard and sub-committee of MURC, the programme was
also focussed towards preparing them with team building and crisis management. In addition to this, MT4T was also a good platform to strengthen the bonds of relationship between MURC and the fellows and administrative staff of the mahallah. The 3-day programme saw the running of various activities which were intended for the participants to delve deeper into the meaning of ‘team work’ and ‘towering personality’. Several of these included modules on ice breaking, project management, and team building. Outdoor activities such as ‘Explorace’ and jungle trekking were also included to challenge them physically. Overall, the programme was a success. It has exposed to the participants the importance of being cohesive with one another which will hopefully drive MURC to many achievements.
Heroes at the mountain top.

CAMPUS MANIA By MI and MEE I don’t get it...why have our food prices gone up so high lately? Has the increase in fuel price made such a dramatic effect?
After months of waiting, the all new official web site of Mahallah ‘Uthman has finally made its appearance in cyber space. Simple yet informative, the web site includes various info ranging from the history and background information of the mahallah to the latest news or updates for its residents. The primary focus of the web site is emphasised more towards students’ welfare. Thus, students can send in their feedbacks per-
!

INTERNET PROBLEM We want the University to fix the Internet line in our rooms or to allocate a 24-hour computer lab. The new wireless service is so unreliable - very slow and most of the time not working. Why do we have to pay for the Internet service if the University has already provided it at each kulliyyah? anonymous Feedback: For your information, the University is aware of the problem. Due to the original design of the mahallah (that it is not equipped with network ports), the service could not be rendered. However, the university has planned to have a 24-hour computer lab located at the library area, insyâ-Allah, in the near future. In the meantime, the wireless internet provider has promised to upgrade the internet speed for students’convenience. This is the best that we can do for the students at the moment.
TOO MANY SUMMONSES The security and Mahallah office should not fine students for small mistakes. They should understand the students’ situation first. For example, cars that were parked along the road near block PG and E were given summons at night! This problem is due to fact that the car park behind block A and the stadium were full. So where else should we park? Please provide the solution! unsatisfied car owner Feedback: The mahallah will bring up this matter to the IP division. In the meantime, students can park their cars at the parking space behind the sports complex. FISH DIED IN THE RIVER/POND Many fish died and it is too smelly for us at block A, B, C, and D. I hope the MRC can do something and find out what is happening to the water quality suka pandang Feedback: The MRC went to Kg. Sg. Pusu and was informed by the villagers that the water was spoiled with diesel. That’s why many fish died in the river.
REMOTE CONTROL FOR TV ROOM Where is the remote control for the TV room? I find it difficult to change the channel. I have to borrow the remote control from the kiosk. I hope the office or MRC can look into this matter seriously. movie fan Feedback: The mahallah has purchased a new remote control to replace the old one. The MRC will be assigned to be in charged of keeping the remote control. Please request the remote control from Br. Aizat. PRICE AT CAFÉ TOO HIGH What happened to the price in our café? Why is it too high if we compare to other mahallahs’ café? MRC please do something?! fight4urite Feedback: The MRC has arised this matter in mahallah office and the caterer. We also have sent a complaint letter to our honorable deputy rector about this matter. Please check our notice board for further information because we have already pasted a copy of the complaint letter and the report of our meeting with our honorable deputy rector, Ustaz Hamidon, MRCs and Facilities, Foods and Services Unit(FFSU).
