AHLAN WA SAHLAN YA RAMADHAN... “O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) selfrestraint.” (Al-Baqarah: 183) Praise be to Allah who has granted us to live on and endure the blessed month of Ramadhan once again. Indeed, this is the month to teach ourselves the virtues of patience and perseverance. The ability to withhold our nafs shall be tested to its utmost. Abundant rewards shall be given to those who remain firm in their effort to seek the pleasure of Allah (mardhâtillah). This is the month where all of us are urged to increase our acts of worship (‘Ibâdah) and this is the season to increase our faith in Allah the Almighty. It is in the month of Ramadhan that the awaited night, lailatul-Qadr, is revealed. The Holy Qur’an mentions that worship on this night is better than worshiping for a thousand month: “We have indeed revealed this (Message) on the

Night of Power. And what will explain to thee what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand Months. Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by God’s permission, on every errand. (That Night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn.” (Al-Qadr: 1 - 5) From the MRC, we would like to wish all residents of Mahallah ‘Uthman and the

whole community of IIUM a blissful and prosperous Ramadhan. Grab this opportunity to draw yourselves nearer to Allah. Who knows...it may be the last Ramadhan that you will ever encounter. As for the coming ‘Eidul-fitr, we wish you ‘Eid Mubârak and a safe journey back home. And as a last reminder, please check out before you leave for the vacation!

SPORTS CARNIVAL 2005 Last month, a special event entitled ‘Sports Carnival’ was organised by all mahallat from the 16th - 24th September, 2005. The event was one of its kind and saw the participation of all mahallat in organising such a grand programme. In addition, it was also a good platform to foster the spirit of good sportsmanship among students. They surely deserve a big pat on the back! Below are results for the male mahallat. As you can see, Mahallah ‘Uthman has managed to attain 2nd place in the overall event. Congratulations to our athletes! Overall : 1st - Mahallah As-Siddiq 2nd - Mahallah ‘Uthman 3rd - Mahallah Al-Farouq

PRINCIPAL & P RESIDENTIAL REMARKS I am glad to see that Mahallah ‘Uthman’s MRC 2005/2006 has managed to produce their first MURC Flash. I hope that it will be the supplementary reading material for the residents of Mahallah ‘Uthman as well as the IIUM community at large. Through this effort, I believe that the MRC can produce ideas and promote ummatic agendas relating to the welfare and interests of the Mahallah’s residents. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the newly appointed members of the MRC under the leadership of Bro. Mohd Aizat Yaacob. I hope that the MRC will be able to perform the responsibilities and duties entrusted to them. At the same time the MRC will be the “connecting bridge” between residents and the administrative office of Mahallah ‘Uthman and the University’s

authorities. Above that, I strongly urge that we can work as a team, to give and take and to co-operate and strive towards achieving the vision and mission of the University. For that purpose, I really appreciate comments and suggestion from all residents, as I always believe that there is room for improvement. Finally, in conjunction with Ramadhan, I would like to grab this opportunity also to congratulate all residents of Mahallah ‘Uthman. We hope that we will be able to sincerely perform our responsibilities as Muslims both by our intention (niyyah) and also by good deed. We also pray and hope from Allah Subhânahu wa Ta’âla to grant us his blessings and forgiveness and to reward us with His paradise (Jannah). Wishing all residents the best of luck, happy living and enjoy your stay at Mahallah ‘Uthman. DR. MOHAMMAD DEEN MOHD NAPIAH

Assalâmu ‘alaikum. On behalf of the new MRC lineup, it is my ardent hope that collective support can be given by all residents in order to assist me and my MRC colleagues to fulfill our responsibilities. We will try our best to cater for the welfare and interests of Mahallah ‘Uthman residents. At the same time, I would like to ask for an advanced apology on behalf of both the MRC and Mahallah staff should there be any drawback and inconvenience throughout our tenure. As a last remark, I would like to wish all residents a blessful Ramadhan and the best of luck in your final exams. Be sure to take your sahur before you enter for ‘battle’! MOHD AIZAT YAACOB
