MURC FLASH, 2nd Edition | SEMESTER 2, 2005/2006

INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA

MURC VISITS UUM The MRC of Proton College of the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) cordially greeted the MRC members of Mahallah ‘Uthman and Mahallah Sumayyah on the early morning of 6th January 2006. The special meetup marked the initiation of a joint-venture programme between the MRCs of Mahallah ‘Uthman and Sumayyah, and the MRC of Proton College, UUM. Principal and MRC President of Proton College, Mdm. Raudhah and Br. Idzuafi Hadi Kamilan were among those who greeted us upon our arrival. One of the objectives of the programme was to forge a bonded relationship between the MRC of both universities and in effect, would be able to come up with further collaborations in the future. Amongst others, it was also a great opportunity for the members of the MRC to get to know each other and learn their style of management. Indeed, we did learn a lot from our new Proton College acquaintance. Their spirits were highly geared towards their mission of providing the best college services and they seemed ever so engaged. Our 2-days programme began almost immediately as we arrive. At 8 in the morning, a get-together programme (gotong-royong) with residents of Proton College began. Activities

consisted of cleaning and college maintenance. What was interesting was the way residents of the college portrayed their commitment. We found that a number of them volunteered to paint up some parts of the building. Though their small work might not at all seem significant, it was at least a good way to show their contributions to their college. The environment that encircled Proton College was clearly different from ours. At first sight of the college, our delegates were taken aback over one thing; the college housed both male and female students. Thus, it was of no wonder that among their MRC members, they had both male and female representatives. The buildings were modest looking but their rooms were spectacular! We were informed that within their college, they periodically conduct ‘The Cleanest Room’ programme. When the time comes for room inspection, MRC members of the opposite gender will check the condition of the rooms and grade their cleanliness. In other words, boys will check girls’ rooms and vice versa. From what can be observe, the programme certainly do seem to have ignited a serious consideration towards cleanliness among the residents. This can be further asserted when we realised that even the male residents’ room

condition can beat that of the females. Besides meeting up with the MRC, we were also introduced to UUM’s board of Student’s Representative Council (SRC). It was undeniably a good occasion to share thoughtful ideas and learn something new from them. Being the highest students’ organisational body, the SRC briefed us regarding their roles in the University and gave us their insights of programme management. After Friday prayer, a formal meeting was set up between our delegates and the board of MRC from Proton College. We had a good session in knowing each other and discussed ways on how to improve services at college level. The discussion further continued at night, but this time, informally. Our discussion seems to be never-ending and it almost looked as if a one day meeting was not enough. This must be what they mean when you hit the ground running; once the activity starts enthusiastically, it is hard to stop. On the last day of our visit, the Vice Chancellor of UUM, Assoc. Prof. Dato’ Arif, came to see and bid us farewell. Although the programme was short, we had at least achieved our objectives of this programme. Besides strengthening the spirit of brotherhood, we had gained both knowledge and friendship in return.

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS

Assalâmu ‘alaikum wa rahmatu-llâhi wa barakâtuh. Welcome back to all my fellow friends

who have returned from their kampung and greetings to those who have stayed here in the mahallah during the vacation.Time has certainly been ticking fast for we are now half way through our semester. The number of holidays that we had to go through this semester is already too many and I guess that’s why most of us feel that the semester has been short. Moreover, they say that time flies very fast when you are having so much fun. My dear friends, as of this time, MURC has already organised a few programmes, one of which involved a visit to UUM. It is not our activities that I want to recount but the spirit and determination that I see in them. Both the JPPK (Jawatankuasa Pembangunan Pelajar Kolej, or in our terms, the MRC) of Proton College as well as its residents seem distinctly resolute and high-spirited. It is this attitude that we also want to see among our mahallah residents. Having everyone participating in a programme makes the event meaningful and worthwhile. Therefore, please take note of our

future events and do take part. An MRC programme is your programme! Quite recently, our mahallah has been highlighted in one of the local newspapers. It seems that someone among ourselves have been reporting the problem of monkeys disturbance elsewhere other than our own mahallah office. This, I regret to say, is not the kind of attitude that we want to have. We have a proper channel to raise our problems. If you encounter any problem within our mahallah, please do not hesitate to report it to the office or the MRC immediately. Never adhere to the stereotypical claim that the mahallah does not take action when something is reported. In actual, the mahallah office treats your report with the greatest urgency. The office has already summoned the relevant authority to capture the monkeys. Till then, have a pleasant stay and enjoy your days ahead! MOHD AIZAT YAACOB President of MRC

SELAMA

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMME (FOLLOW-UP)

If the MRC of Mahallah ‘Ali claims to have been highlighted through the media, they are not the only one. Following a joint-venture programme between MURC and Mahallah Sumayyah, the villagers of Selama, Perak, were well in for a hospitality visit. The programme, which was held last semester has been highlighted through local media and continues to bring its light till this day. Commenced under its title ‘Khabaran dari Selama’ from the 6th - 11th April last year, the programme gave a touching insight on what modest living meant to the MRC members. With no line signal and television, the environment was sure to draw anyone into thinking how complacent it is to live in an urban area than a rural. Upon arrival at the village, the MRC members were divided into their foster families. The days that followed after were filled with buoyant activities which increased the bonds of relationship even more; there were get-together (gotong-royong) activities with the villagers, modules and games for children, talks and forum by prominent panellists such as Dr. Jamnul Azhar Mulkan, Dr. Habeeb Rahman, and Dr. Robiah Kulop Hamzah, and among others, a cultural & arts night where the In-Team nasyeed group was invited to perform. On the last day, the programme was closed by the Larut parliament member, YBM. Dato’ Raja Hj. Ahmad Zainuddin bin Raja Hj. Omar. The programme was indeed a success and though it was initiated last year, our relationship with the villagers remains intact till this day for there were always follow-ups every now and then.

CAMPUS MANIA

By MI and MEE

Look makcik*...did you know that our Selama programme has been on TV1, TV2, and Harian Metro newspaper? *makcik - in Malay custom, this is used to address the female elderly

My dear child, having you here with us is what matters most to us than having you on the media...

Villager from Selama

On the 8th December 2005, a special session with the new family members of Mahallah ‘Uthman was conducted. These new members consisted of surprisingly 38 AIKOL students of the recent second intake for 2005/2006. The objective of this session was to introduce the new intakes to the staff, fellows, and MRC of Mahallah ‘Uthman as well as to foster the spirit of brotherhood among those present. During the previous month of Ramadhan, the committee members of MURC saw the opportunity to conduct a down-to-earth programme. Last semester on 23rd October 2005, MURC has organised an iftar programme for all residents of Mahallah ‘Uthman. Food was given free by our committee at the MURC operations room an hour before iftar. The objective of the programme was none other but to make residents of Mahallah ‘Uthman acquainted to the new board of MURC members. Elected near the end of last semester, it was thought out to be an ideal way for a face-to-face encounter with the residents. The iftar was successful since free food was the undoubtedly main attraction. Let us remind ourselves, however, that there are more than meets the eye. Besides introducing the new members of MURC, solidarity amongst ourselves was and is also what we seek. Thus, keep this in mind when you participate in any of our future events. As of the semester, we hope to have more support in our programmes.
