HISTORIC MORRIS COUNTY THE GREAT AMERICAN WEEKEND GETAWAY:
How It All Began Sometimes a trip is more than a trip—it's an adventure! A brief escape from our daily routine and an opportunity to discover something new and to explore. It's about embracing and enjoying unique experiences, some of which can be found a stone’s throw away on a weekend... by car! Rich in historic lore, tradition, and awaiting your exploration is Morris County! Located approximately 30 miles northwest of New York City, the area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Indians and then settled by New Englanders of European origin in the early 1700’s while it was known as the British Province of New Jersey. The county was formed by an Act of the State Legislature on March 15, 1738. Named after Colonel Lewis Morris, then Governor of the Province of New Jersey, the region originally included what are now the counties of Morris, Sussex and Warren. Several years after its founding, the community of West or New Hanover was renamed "Morris Town" and designated the county seat of government. During the Revolutionary War and down to today, Morristown has been known as The Military Capital of the American Revolution, as it played host during two winter encampments by General George Washington and his Continental Army. Much of the history of these encampments is preserved today at Morristown National Historical Park. In the years following the Revolutionary War, Morris County became a leader in the iron ore mining and fabrication industry. It was in Morristown that the steam boiler and some of the machinery for the S.S. Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and parts of the first American locomotive were manufactured, and the telegraph perfected by Samuel F. B. Morse and Alfred Vail. In fact, the old barn in which the two men conducted their experiments and sent the first message "A patient waiter is no loser”, still stands. In 1831, the Morris Canal, conceived and developed by Morristown resident George P. Macculloch, was begun. Crossing the state from Phillipsburg to Newark, a distance of 102 miles, it played a major role in the movement of iron ore, coal and freight from mines to factories, and made Morris County an important transportation center.
5
6
The Morris County iron industry faced ruin when iron ore was discovered near Lake Superior in Michigan where it could be mined more cheaply. As the population of the county grew and the methods of transportation improved, new industries sprang up throughout the county, many using the iron ore as raw materials for finished products. By 1900 the nation's business and financial leaders, seeking escape from New York City, discovered Morris County (which was renowned for its isolation, ideal climate and unspoiled countryside) and began constructing large country estates. Within a few years, more millionaires lived within a three-mile radius of the Morristown Green than anywhere else in the United States. These magnificent estates were numerous enough to fill the pages of a pre-World War I vintage picture book entitled Beautiful Homes of Morris County, boasting the most opulent homes of moguls such as Otto H. Kahn, Charles Mellon and the Frelinghuysens. Sadly, the Mead Hall reinstatement of the federal income tax and the Stock Market Crash of 1929, sounded the death knell for the large estates. Throughout the 1930's and 1940's the impressive mansions that lined Madison Avenue’s "Millionaires Row" were demolished to avoid rising property taxes and upkeep expenses. Since the turn of the century, the character of industry in Morris County has changed from iron mining and manufacturing to research, pharmaceuticals and communications. In the same fashion, the character of the land itself has changed from agricultural to residential. Beautiful homes and gardens predominate, both in housing developments, many of them located on the estates of former millionaires, to small country estates. Today, Morris County is a fastgrowing county in the tri-state area and combines unsurpassed natural beauty and charming suburban living with proximity to great metropolitan areas. New Jersey's seventh largest county now boasts notable museums, outstanding forums for the arts, exquisite gardens, parks and outdoor recreation, multimillion-dollar shopping Acorn Hall centers and exceptional air, rail and bus transportation services that serve thousands of commuters daily. From such humble origins, this great county arose. We invite you to explore our beloved area where the past beckons, the music flourishes, the food is award-winning and the scenery and festivals are spectacular! Whether you’re a history buff, an outdoor enthusiast or a lover of the arts, come experience the Great Weekend Getaway destination known as Morris County!

W h a t’ s “ N e w ” i n Morris County THE GREEN AT MORRISTOWN For nearly 300 years the Morristown Green has been the most distinguishing feature of the town, appearing on the earliest maps of the area. It recently underwent a million dollar renovation and rededication. One of only two New Jersey greens, or commons, to survive down to the 21st century, it has been restored by an award-winning landscape architect and features interpretive signage and historic sculptures. Formerly a parade ground for General George Washington’s troops, it has been central to the life of the town since its founding in 1738. THE COMMUNITY THEATRE at The Mayo Center for the Performing Arts The Community Theatre was recently given a $6 million upgrade, which includes state-of-the-art backstage technical capabilities, a new orchestra pit, fly-rail system, dressing rooms and a multi-purpose room known as the ‘Starlight Room’, to host private receptions, a theatre education studio and corporate meetings. The theatre's monthly programming has drawn people to Morris County. As one reviewer remarked, "Morristown has come alive as a vibrant cultural and artistic center with attention focused on events held at The Community Theatre’s Mayo Center for the Performing Arts!”. MORRISTOWN NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK The National Park Service oversees the park, founded in 1933, as the nation’s first national historical park. It consists of four locations: Washington’s Headquarters with the Ford Mansion and Museum, Fort Nonsense, Jockey Hollow, and the New Jersey Brigade Area with the Cross Estate and Gardens. An astounding $5 million renovation to the park’s Headquarters Museum (through public and private partnerships) consists of an update to the overall structure and a brand new wing which houses two outstanding exhibits: Defining American Style and Lloyd W. Smith’s Archival and Rare Book Gallery. Two additional exhibit galleries are scheduled to be completed by 2010 and are planned to house the park’s extensive historic weapons collections. This has been designated an important National Historic Landmark site for its association with General George Washington who was in residence at the Ford Mansion for 200 days in 1780. MORRIS MUSEUM Renowned as a vibrant educational center, the Morris Museum was awarded the Murtogh D. Guinness collection of 700 mechanical musical instruments, mechanical figures and more than 5,000 programmed media ranging from player piano rolls to pinned cylinders. This extraordinary collection represents one of the most significant of its kind in the world and is entitled: Musical Machines & Living Dolls: Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata from the Murtogh D. Guinness Collection. The exhibit is on display in a brand new 4,300 square-foot gallery and takes visitors on a journey through the history of on-demand musical entertainments.

HISTORIC SPEEDWELL One of Morris County’s National Historic Landmarks is Historic Speedwell. The most important building at Historic Speedwell is the factory where Morristown’s Alfred Vail and Samuel F. B. Morse perfected and first successfully demonstrated the electro-magnetic telegraph in 1838. A $1 million structural restoration was completed in September 2008 and boasts a new interactive telegraph exhibit. The Factory Building is now not only an important scientific museum, but a monument to the development of communications in the world. THE STICKLEY MUSEUM AT CRAFTSMAN FARMS Craftsman Farms is the former home of noted turn-of-the-century designer Gustav Stickley. This National Historic Landmark site, which consists of 26 acres, is one of the most significant places associated with the American Arts and Crafts movement. The museum has recently completed the third phase of restorations, with momentous refurbishments of the master bedroom at The Log House (built in 1911), a new Education Room in The Annex (which is an ideal rental space for meetings, retreats, classes and events), and significant renovations to the North and South Cottages—all a ‘must see’ for visitors to this pastoral former agricultural school for boys.

P l a n Yo u r Tr i p This section is devoted to the where, when and how of your trip - the advanced planning required to get it together and take it on the road. If you are new to Morris County and not familiar with the area, we offer the following recommendations.
Tour 1 – National Historic Landmarks 10:00am – 11:30am Visit Washington’s Headquarters, Morristown National Historical Park, home of Jacob Ford Jr. This fine Morristown mansion was military headquarters during the American Revolution in 1779-1780 when George Washington made it his home for 200 days. Tour the mansion with a National Park Service ranger and tour the recently renovated museum. Should you wish to extend your time at the National Historical Park, visit some or all of its additional three sites: Fort Nonsense, the Cross Estate and Gardens, the Wick House and garden, and the soldiers’ huts at Jockey Hollow. There are gift shops at the museum and at the Jockey Hollow Visitors Center. The park is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1:45am – 1:00pm Enjoy lunch in downtown Morristown, featuring over 75 restaurants with international cuisine options. These include Caribbean, Hispanic, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Irish, Italian, Greek, New York deli-style, new American and an Afghani restaurant. 1:30pm – 2:30pm The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms is nationally recognized as one of the most significant sites connected with the American Arts & Crafts Movement and the only house Gustav Stickley designed and built for himself, and lived in with his family. The grounds are open all year round. Call for tour times. Admission is charged at the door. Visit the excellent gift shop. 3:00pm – 4:00pm Historic Speedwell is an early 19th century farmstead and ironworks managed by the Morris County Park Commission and home to a number of historic Revolutionary War-era homes. It features the life and times of the Stephen Vail family and their contribution to the development of the first successful electromagnetic telegraph. Stephen’s son, Alfred, collaborated with Samuel F.B. Morse and first demonstrated their invention here in the factory building, now a National Landmark site. Through exhibits and guided tours, including demonstrations of the telegraph, Historic Speedwell captures the birth of the Industrial Revolution.

P l a n Yo u r Tr i p Tour 2 – Historic House Museum Tour 10:00am – 11:30am Excite the mind and enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the arts at the Morris Museum. Formerly the home of the Frelinghuysen family, the museum recently unveiled a spectacular new exhibition entitled, “Musical Machines & Living Dolls: Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata from the Murtogh D. Guinness Collection” in a brand new 4,300 square-foot gallery. Other areas of the museum’s distinguished collection include costumes and textiles, fine art, decorative art, dolls and toys, natural science, geology, paleontology and anthropology. 11:45am – 1:15pm Enjoy lunch in downtown Morristown, featuring over 75 restaurants with international cuisine options. These include Caribbean, Hispanic, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Irish, Italian, Greek, New York deli-style, new American and an Afghani restaurant. 1:30pm – 2:30pm Visit Acorn Hall and experience mid-Victorian splendor at its best. The house is furnished primarily with pieces from the Schermerhorn and Crane-Hone families, supplemented with significant objects from other prominent Morris County families. Carpeting, wall covering and decorative paint techniques remain as they were in the nineteenth century. 3:00pm – 4:00pm Experience Macculloch Hall. Built in 1810, this Federal-style mansion of more than twenty rooms was home to George Macculloch (best remembered as the Father of the Morris Canal) and five generations of his descendants. The museum features a collection of 18th and 19th century decorative and fine arts and is home to the largest collection of works by political cartoonist Thomas Nast. End your afternoon with a stroll behind Macculloch Hall through one of the oldest gardens in Morris County.
Tour 3 – Take The Kids 10:00am – 11:30am Through its changing exhibitions, theatre programs and host of special activities, the Morris Museum is an exciting venue to experience personal and shared discovery for kids and adults alike. The Museum excels at presenting programs based on the “real things”, including exhibits on the human body, rocks and minerals, mammals, dinosaurs and American Indians. For a list of current and upcoming kid-focused exhibits, visit www.morrismuseum.org. 11:30am – 12:30pm Enjoy lunch in downtown Morristown, featuring over 75 restaurants with international cuisine options. The most popular programs involve craftspeople - such as carpenters, coopers and blacksmiths demonstrating the use of tools in the performance of their professions.
