Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Hypersensitivity Use cautiously in: Alcohol, head trauma; increased intracranial pressure, severe renal, hepatic, or pulmonary disease; hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency Common side effects confusion, sedation, dizziness, dysphoria, euphoria, floating feeling, hallucinations, headache, unusual dreams, blurred vision diplopia, miosis, respiratory depression, hypotension, bradycardia, constipation, nausea, vomiting, urinary retention, flushing, itching, sweating

Binds to receptors in the CNS. Alters the perception of and response to painful stimuli while producing generalized CNS depression

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC, or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) MAO inhibitors, alcohol, sedative/hypnotics, clomipramine, barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants and antihistamines

Lab value alterations caused by medicine

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Instruct patient how and when to ask for pain medication. Do not administer PCA doses to the sleeping patient. Risk for injury.
