Case Study 1 1.1

List and describe the technologies used in “Are farms becoming digital firm?” article.

Answer: This is the list of the used technologies a. Monitoring software called Granula is used by the employees who work with report their acreage in real time, to monitoring dashboard full of data and report them to manager. Also, it will help farmers that work in the farm and the flow of information flow without any delays. b. Self-Driving tractor uses GPS (Global Positioning System) will locates all the equipment location using satellite based navigation system and it will be connected to the farmer monitor on the IPad’s and other computer. c. Self-driving tractors, a tractor that can drive themselves and do planting and spraying machines uses wireless connected sensors and used it to computerized instruction to apply seed and nutrients to the fields. d. GPS Controlled AutoTrac System, that enable the farmers to track take their hands off from the steering wheel and JDlink will automatically update the data about field to a remote computer center and farmers can download the planting or fertilizing instructions. John Deere Machine also uses the GPS to create map based on aerial or satellite photos to improve planting, seeding, spraying, and nutrient application. e. The FieldScript Application, can help the farmers to examine the amount of sunlight, shade and variations in soil nitrogen, and phosphorus content. FieldScrips analyze the data and provide accurate planting instruction to iPad connected to planting equipment in the field. This tools also show and help the farmers to pinpoint the areas that need to fertilizer, saving them to cost of spreading fertilizer everywhere while boosting their yield in arrears that have performed poorly and reducing the amount of excess fertilizer that enters the water table and it is good for the environment. f. Deere Tools, can help farmers to use less manure because of computer precision processing, which can save up to $10,000 in individual farmers. g. Data analysis and Planting, can help farmers to increase their output. This system tell them about the precise seed in different areas. This data analysis also will keep track the weather condition and other factor that may affect the farm and provide advice for the farmer about instruction in planning and fertilizing. h. Grower Information Services Cooperative, still developing information system that enable farmers to capture data to streaming on their own tractor and combines, store data in their own data center, market the data to seed, pesticide, equipment, and anything company needed for future treatment.

Pretending this case is also in the Indonesian Farming Circumtances, in what sense are Indonesian farms now digital firms? Explain your answer. Answer: Indonesia as an agricultural country has a lot of agricultural land and more than 30% of Indonesia population is working in this sector. Yet, our agricultural production is still not enough to fulfill the national demand and because of that we still need to import from the other country. Most of Indonesia farmers are still use traditional farming system by applying some treatment to their cops. I believe, the effort for increase the agricultural production sector is to implement the precision agricultural farming system or we know as ‘smart farming’. Precision agricultural which already growing rapidly in several countries in the world aims to reduce the environmental impact of agricultural activities, but at the same time can increase the productivity, by optimizing the output and input and also maintaining the soil quality through the appropriate technology. PA technology should be developed in Indonesia for increasing the agricultural sector. Actually, on 2018, Faculty of Agricultural Technology (Fateta) Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) already introduced precipalm, a system that provides recommendation of NPK fertilization on palm oil tree using leaves imaging. With mathematical modelling which uses color’s band on the satellite image, palm oil farmers can find out fertility level of the soil and the plants. With precipalm, farmer can determine how much fertilizer needed or recommend for one certain area and this system has satisfied the principle of precision agricultural farming using that system. This precipalm already tested in Jambi, Kalimantan, Bogor, and PTPN V. there are already 400 samples of soil and leaves to build nutrition estimation. The data said that nutrition content reached 70% and NPK accuracy is 95%. With that data, the result is so satisfying and we believe that it is suitable to apply it in Indonesia. Right now, I believe it is not about the measure of capital, measure of knowledge, it is about the different ways to think and different ways to take the step. We need a more human resources which is more agile, hardworking and creative. With that, every problem we can face it and give the best effective solution. Farmer in Indonesia still need more socialization about the precision agriculture because of the lack of education in technology and information system. The government need to participate in this socialize and encouraged the farmers to applicate this precision agriculture and give them rule and regulations for the protection.

How is information technology changing the way farmers their business? Answer: Farmers right now looking for information to help them grow their field with fewer resources and less environmental impact. The program can help farmer to sensor the measure of water and soil composition. With, better information has given farmer the better data and information to work the good fields. A long time ago, farmer still use traditional way to working in the fields and it is already proven that it is not efficient anymore because of the advances of the technology. It’s now to move on to better farming condition to have a better future and also to meet the demand in the market.

1.4

How does the system described in this case improve farming operations? Answer: The system will improve farming operations especially for the small farmers. The cost of investing for new technology and vendor service fees for some of these tools such as FieldScripts can amount to more than what many small farmers can earn in extra yield from their farms. The problem in precision agriculture is diminishing returns that come along with costly technologies

How do precision agriculture system support decision making? Identify three decisions that can be supported. Answer: Decision support system is enables the farmer to make effective decision to become more productive and higher yield. There are 3 categories based on the problem that can be supported. First, structured, problems can be solved systemically. Second, unstructured, is the problems that is really unpattern. Third, semi-structured problem, it is problem that cannot be verify the optional decision making. Precision agriculture system support decision making with that 3 categories based on the problem and also like collecting, managing and give information related to decision question like about the environment and how to develop it. Also, collecting, managing and give information to company related to decision questions like the production capability and productivity. The last one is collecting, managing and give feedback for the execution decision such as material supply plan and production implementation.

How helpful is precision agriculture to individual farmers and the agricultural industry? Explain your answer. Answer: Precision agriculture for individual farmers because everything we need to introduce it from the small thing right? Well, in Indonesia there are still many individual farmers and with introduce them precision agriculture for improving the productivity and socialize that this programs can increase their production. However, we know that for individual farmer the precision agriculture is too costly and the farmer sometimes don’t understand how to use it because of the lack of socializing. Maybe, we will find way, like simple methods of preparation of detailed soil maps (maybe the resolution is 5-10m) without very expensive GPS equipment or with state support in this aspect. Precision agriculture for agricultural industry can give more profit also can fulfill the demand of food in the market and maybe with precision agriculture that change the way how farmers do the farming (not like the old days using hoe and manual watering) can make the young people interested in this sector and be the successful farmer.

Case 2 1.1 Wearables have the potential to change the way organizations and workers conduct business. Discuss the implications of this statement. Answer: Wearables device has big potential to change the way organizations and workers because of the big opportunities. Wearable device can use in conduct the new business to improve faster and even become health-care monitor. For the new business as wearables enter the workforce, this will help the business for better decision making. Business progress engineers will explore new ways to reengineer older business process to new one. I believe that the implications are the customer will bring this device to work and go everywhere. Also, the IT and Information System need to work harder to manage the device and improve the application. Security and privacy issues are both challenging to the individual and enterprise. Big companies in IT and IS field will develop new applications and services. Also, I believe the biggest implications will happen in our live using this wearable device affect us to be more productive and multitasking. 1.2 How would a business process such as ordering a product for a customer in the field be changed, if the salesperson was wearing a smartwatch equipped with salesforce software? Answer: The business process of ordering a product for a customer could definitely give big change especially if the salesperson is wearing a smartwatch equipped with salesforce software. There are several reason of it. First, salesforce.com has important feature for this situation. The fact that this feature can send them notification to their wrist while doing the business is really important. Maybe, while talking and do other things in business, the salesperson can instantly can request a sales discount instantly just by using their smartwatch. Therefore, if the discount is granted, the salesperson can get it right from their watch and go directly to make the deal. Another reason is the apple watch has the feature of power point, it can help the employee to remember the objective before do the presentation in the meeting. With wearing smart watch, you can obtain the information that you are not get on the usual time when you don’t wear it and that can help you to improve any business plan. 1.3 What management, organization, and technology issues would have to be addressed if a company was thinking of equipping its workers with a wearable computing device? Answer: Well, if a company try to equipping their employee with wearable computing device, they should know and care about the reaction of their workers. In management position, it would consider and decide what kind of device for each department and position to the business to wear for effective way. For instance, the office employee will have different feature application with the field workers. For organization side, they need to make sure that all employees need to use the smart watch and application because if they not use it, there is no point at all to issuing this program and maybe will waste the time and money. The technology issues that the company should focus on their employee to make sure that they can connect to their phones, laptop, internet, etc, with their device or if the company not doing this, it would be useless.

1.4 What kind of businesses are most likely to benefit from wearable computers? Select a business and describe how a wearable computing device could help that business improve operations or decision making. Answer: The business that I feel will really benefit using the wearable computers or device is marketing and sales company that are doing business deals and also the feature of salesforce.com that support it. However, I think the amusement park like “Dunia Fantasi – Ancol” can also get benefit from this wearable device. For instance, when we as a customer go in do Dufan – Ancol we will wear wristband that link to all our family member so if one of us is getting lost, we just need to take that wristband to the staff worker and we can locate them. Also, we can use the smart watch in Dufan with do the ticketing or the payment using credit card. Another thing is maybe with customer using the smartwatch that show them the queue in one ride and can eliminate the long queue from each ride. This will give the best profit and service for the customer and company. Also, with that performance the management will have enough consideration to make and effective and efficient decision making.
