The fire at the Stardust discotheque in Dublin on St. Valentine’s night in 1981 was, at the time, one of the worst disasters of its kind ever seen in Europe. It was 2.00 am in the morning and 841 young people were getting ready for the last dance before setting off home. Suddenly the DJ noticed that a small fire had broken out in the corner of the dance hall .He thought that somebody’s cigarette had started a small fire, but as it hadn’t set off the fire alarms he didn’t take any notice. Within moments the entire hall in the heart of Dublin’s Artane working-class suburb was on fire. The enormous ceiling began to melt in the intense heat and as the lights went out there was a wild stampede to escape the burning inferno. Forty-six people were killed and 130 injured, some of them very badly, before the fire -fighters were able to break into the club and put the fire out. In the Stardust the curtains were inflammable, the tables were made of plywood with plastic tops. The chairs were made of red plastic which gave off lethal black smoke. Some of the emergency doors were locked to prevent people from getting in without paying, as were the windows in the toilets. For over four years prior to this disaster regulations to ban certain materials from use in discotheques had been under discussion, Ironically, new laws came into effect ten days after the Stardust fire. 16. a. c. 17. a. c. 18.
