Unfortunately, the unsavory and sometimes criminal practices of some in the sex industry operating under the guise of massage therapists have had a negative impact on public perception and threaten the future of this beneficial practice. I believe that research into the future of massage therapy and what steps are being taking to combat this problem would be beneficial to me as I consider starting my own business in the field. I intend to research the following points: The evolution of massage therapy and the role of the massage therapist in the 21st century Public opinion of massage therapy nationwide Crime statistics nationwide Any pending or proposed legislation in any states to limit the practice or ban the practice altogether 5. Any actions by national and local massage related associations to raise the awareness and reputation of the massage therapy industry

I plan to interview massage therapists both locally and distant for their takes on the issue, and I plan to use reputable sources on the web such as the American Massage Therapy Association and the National Certification Board for Massage and Bodywork Therapists. It will probably take about 5 or more pages to cover the issues, and I expect six or more works cited entries, due to the scope of my research. I don’t anticipate any cost for the research and I plan to spend several days compiling my data. The benefits of this work are twofold. First, since I am considering a career in massage therapy, it will help me to decide whether I should open my own practice or find employment in an existing medical or wellness facility. Secondly, it is my hope that my work in this field will raise public awareness and educate others as to the reputable and beneficial role massage therapy plays in wellness today.
