Abstract Although green algae S. subsalsa sp biomass is shown to be very effective in removing heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions, the mechanism of metal ion binding was not yet fully understood. To better comprehend this mechanism, the carboxyl and carbonyl groups in algae S. subsalsa biomass were chemically modified individually to block the lead(II) cation binding ligans binding in order to determine their contribution to the metal biosorption process by green algae S. subsalsa biomass. Esterification of the carboxyl group and medification of carbonyl group on the green algae S. subsalsa sp biomass resulted in a reduction of lead(II) cation binding about 19,33 % and 37,45 % at pH and pH 4, respectively . This blocking activity of carboxyl and carbonyl groups would shown the carboxyl and carbonyl groups play an important role in the binding of Pb2+ cations.
