Writing your METHOD 1) Draw out the table to show an overall plan and summary of your data collection. - Use the template in your Support Booklet 2) Write a paragraph for EACH method below (and any extras you plan to do): - justifying each technique, and - the reasons for how this data will help you answer your title question. Environment Survey WHAT –State that you will carry out a BIPOLAR ANALYSIS to judge the quality of the environment at each location. HOW – Describe in detail exactly HOW you will do it. WHY – Explain that this is to evaluate the quality and quantity of both the HUMAN and PHYSICAL elements at both locations. Sketches and Photos WHAT –State that you will take photos and draw sketches of the areas and of notable features. HOW – Describe in detail exactly HOW you will choose the locations. WHY – Explain that this is to give evidence of the other measurements and judgements you make. It also gives a visual representation of the HUMAN and PHYSICAL features to accompany the numerical and written data you collect. Beach Quality Survey WHAT –State that you will carry out Quadrat Surveys along a transect at each location. HOW – Describe in detail exactly HOW you will do it (see Field Work task booklet) WHY – Explain that this is to analyse the quality of both the beach (PHYSICAL feature/attraction) at both locations. Land Use Survey WHAT –State that you will colour code the different categories of land use and buildings for a given area at each location. HOW – Describe in detail exactly HOW you will do it – using colour shading on a base map. You can then use an overlay grid to judge the percentage of each type of land use. WHY – Explain that this is to calculate the amount of HUMAN and PHYSICAL features and attractions at both locations. This will also show the proportion of HUMAN features aimed at tourists at each location.
Coastal Management Survey WHAT –State that you will carry out a checklist at each location of any coastal management techniques at both locations. HOW – Describe in detail exactly HOW you will do it (see Field Work task booklet). WHY – Explain that this is to determine the impact (e.g. visual) of these techniques as well as how much protection is given to each area (i.e. which area is most protected, what they most want to protect).
Litter Count WHAT –State that you will carry out Litter Counts (e.g. along a transect or your own chosen technique) at each location. HOW – Describe in detail exactly HOW you will do it (think about your own chosen system). WHY – Explain that this is to analyse the quality of both the environment as well as management and the amount of people attracted. E.g. more people = more litter).
Car Park Survey WHAT –State that you will monitor the amount of cars into a car park at both locations. HOW – Describe in detail exactly HOW you will do it. You will count the number of cars entering a car park at both locations using a tally (state how long you will do the counts for and how many counts you will do). WHY – Explain that this is to determine which place is most popular.
Questionnaire WHAT –State that you will carry out questionnaires at both locations. Show a copy of your questionnaire. HOW – Describe in detail exactly HOW you will target people (e.g. systematic – what system? – or random?) WHY – Explain that this is for a variety of reasons – annotate your copy to show the PURPOSE OF EACH QUESTION.
