Job family – jobs

1.

Do you know the words blacksmith and farrier? Look them up in a dictionary if you do not. Then think about the differences and similarities between the two jobs. Write down a few sentences. These ideas will help you:

A blacksmith … but a farrier …

Both of them are… Both of them work with … 2.

One of them … but the other…

Read the text about how blacksmiths and farriers work. Check your ideas in task 1.

Blacksmith / Farrier Blacksmiths work on shaping and constructing metalwork. Farriers work with horses and use blacksmithing skills to fit horseshoes. Blacksmiths work with a variety of metals. The design of traditional blacksmiths’ hand tools has changed little over the centuries. Blacksmiths often make their own tools. Blacksmiths make anything from gates for homes to candle-holders. Most blacksmiths specialise in one area of work. Some work in agriculture. Other blacksmiths produce decorative work. Some make limited editions of art objects, both decorative and functional items, for sale in museums and galleries. Blacksmiths work in forges which vary in size from a large engineering workshop to a small brick shed. Blacksmiths’ forges are sometimes uncomfortable, noisy, dirty and smelly. Most of the work is done standing up and involves a lot of bending and lifting. Farriers may also work in forges but often also visit farms, stables and riding schools with mobile equipment.

Project

1. Jobs in my school You want to advertise your school in elementary schools. Make a presentation / exhibition which shows what training you get in your school. Work in groups. Your presentation can be a power point presentation or you can use posters, but it must be portable because you have to take it to different schools. Decide on your end-product. Then collect materials. Your school's homepage - hopefully it has an English version too - and some brochures will help you with your work. Write some sentences about jobs and tools. Describe advantages and disadvantages of the jobs. Show photos of workplaces. 2.

Tools of my trade

Organise an exhibition of tools. Collect as many tools as you can, or borrow them from the school workshop for the time of the exhibition. Label them and put them into groups. You can use pictures of the tools you could not bring. When you are ready, present your collection and explain what they are used for.
