Monthly Update May 2009 Welcome! LVQ extends a heartfelt welcome to its newest associate member, the YWCA! The Y runs the Words for Women literacy program in downtown Montreal. Their literacy program is student-centred, one-on-one and small group, and matches women with trained volunteers. For more information on the Y, visit www.ydesfemmesmtl.org.
International Literacy Day: Are you planning an activity or event for ILD
2009? Let LVQ know and we will post it on our ILD page on the LVQ website (as of June 2009). Send a description of your activity to Vicky at
[email protected]. Literacy video: The video will be available in the latter half of June. The video will be uploaded to the Internet as well, and a video web page will be created on the LVQ website. S.U.N. Team: Members from the SUN team are now available for public speaking. Visit the SUN team page on the LVQ website at http://literacyvolunteersqc.ca/student-unlimited-network.php to learn more about each student and request a speaker. IFPCA funding: There will be no IFPCA funding for 08-09. The funds have been allocated elsewhere. Annual conference: The theme of this year’s annual conference is the environment. Our keynote speaker will be either Dr. Joe Schwarcz or Dr. Ariel Fenster, of the Mcgill Office for Science and Society (back again after last year’s smashing success). New this year-on-line registration! Participants will be able to register individually through the LVQ website, or councils will be able to register their volunteers one-by-one. On-line registration should be available by late August, early September. Look for more details after the summer. Pre-conference: This year, LVQ has decided to host a pre-conference on Friday afternoon, October 23. Planned events include an information session on by-laws open to administrators and volunteers and a student outing. Dinner and an evening activity will also be planned, so mark your calendars! CONFINTÉA VI: This international conference, to have taken place last month in Brazil, was postponed due to the H1N1 flu. Support LVQ: Please support LVQ by mentioning us on your PR materials, on your website, by displaying the pamphlets and postcards, etc. If you need more postcards or pamphlets, please do not hesitate to contact me or Vicky at
[email protected]. New! On-line LVQ forums for students, volunteers and staff: Students and volunteers can now participate in an on-line forum on the LVQ website. To participate in the forum, visit http://literacyvolunteersqc.ca/forums/ . Next general members’ meeting/get-together: Our next meeting will be a one and a half-day session September 28-29, 2009, to be held in Montreal.
