SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
TODAY’S FOCUS – Sixth Sunday of Easter: We hear in the Gospel that the Jewish believers accompanying Peter are shocked when the Spirit comes upon the Gentiles. Love and inclusion are clearly to be part of this new Church established by Jesus. Whoever fears God and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. Who are we to act differently? SCRIPTURE READINGS We need God’s Word each day. Mon (18) Acts of the Apostles 16:11-15; John 15:26--16:4a Tue (19) Acts of the Apostles 16:22-34; John 16:5-11 Wed (20) Acts of the Apostles 17:15, 22--18:1; John 16:12-15 Thur (21) Acts of the Apostles 18:1-8; John 16:16-20 Fri (22) Acts of the Apostles 18:9-18; John 16:20-23 Sat (23) Acts of the Apostles 18:23-28; John 16:23b-28 Sun (24) Seventh Sunday of Easter: Acts of the Apostles 1:15-17, 20a, 20c-26; 1 John 4:711-16; John 17:11b-19 ST. Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Vacation Bible School Summertime Blast! June 8 through June 12, 2009
Sign up for adoration is going well but we still have hours needing to be filled. If you don't think that you can commit to 1 hour a week you might consider sharing the hour with a friend or friends. Some young mothers in the parish are sharing their hour in groups of 4 meaning each one is committed to only 1 hour per month. Also we ask for prayers for those people who are discerning if the overnight hours are possible for them. The schedule can be viewed at www.ourladypittsburg.com . Sign up forms are at the back of the church or you may call Christie Gill at 2310048 or e-mail to
[email protected]
If you haven’t registered please contact the rectory or St. Mary’s Elementary School Office ASAP. VBS is offered to children who have completed at least one year of preschool through those currently in 4th grade. We are still looking for volunteers. If anyone is interested, please contact Kristen O’Brien at St. Mary’s Elementary or 417.642.5738.

REFLECTIONS ON LIFE “Our president ought to look at what abortion has done to poor and minority women in this country… ‘The abortion rate (number of abortions per 1,000 women of child-bearing age) for black women is almost five times that of white women,’ according to Susan Cohen of the Alan Guttmacher Institute. Cohen also notes that ‘the abortion rate among Hispanic women is double the rate among whites.’” (Wanda Franz, Ph.D., NRL News, 2/09)

Parish Finance Report In the February bulletin it was reported that the parish’s investments in the Memorial Fund have fared better than the average fund. Thanks to donations to the Memorial Fund and to sound investments this continues to be the case. As of this week the fund balance is $5,362,604. At the end of our last fiscal
year, June 30, 2008, the fund was $5,401,974. Though our parish tithing (the majority of operating revenue) is now projected to fall short of budget this year, through donations to specific ministries, tight fiscal management, and prayers, our ministries should not greatly suffer.
The budget originally indicated an increase of $50,000, actual tithing numbers will come in at approximately what they were last year. The church roof remains our next major project requiring great capital.

SME Thanks—Mr. Martin As we come to the end of the school year the elementary staff and I would like to thank the parish for the support we received this year. Without the parish our work would not be possible. Your sacrifices and the professional work of our teachers and staff allow our students to gain in their spiritual, academic and social development. Each year, I am amazed by the students’ academic progress and the way they mature and gain in
their faith. We are forming the future stewards of our church and the parish is providing a wonderful example of Catholic faith. As we close the year, I ask our students to pray for the parish and to always be thankful for the school environment we enjoy. After the summer break, we look forward to seeing our students in August to start another exciting school year.
www.catholicgorillas.org.
SMC Thanks—Mr. Gorman It is with tremendous gratitude that I would like to thank our parish for the sacrifices that they have made to provide our students with a Catholic education. The efforts of so many parishioners have allowed our students to excel academically, athletically and spiritually. St. Mary’s Colgan provides our students with a message that is centered in the Gospel values. This
message is seldom found in the world today. For many of our students St. Mary’s Colgan serves as an oasis providing them the opportunity to experience the love of Jesus Christ in a world where that message of love is often lacking. We are very grateful and forever indebted to the members of this parish.
Tithing Cannot Take Summer Vacation Your committed gifts to our parish year-long are required for the parish to maintain its financial obligations. Salaries and utilities, of course, do not take a break during June, July, or August. Thank you for continued gifts. If your income has increased, please increase your parish tithe. Likewise, if your income has fallen, decrease your
tithe proportionally. Please pass to your children the habit of giving, and please continue to pray for those most negatively affected by the current state of the economy, especially those who are currently unemployed. In addition to tithing, please consider including our parish or school in your estate planning; a
“tithe” in your will may include the parish for 10% of the estate or may consider the parish as one of the “children of the family”. Please call the parish office with any questions, 231-2135.
