Mission Statement “Our Marist provides an educational programme that blends faith, culture and life through a climate of cordiality, cooperation and constructive dialogue and thus effect the total formation of the individual, giving due respect to his human dignity.”
Maris Stella High School
Marist “M”. The international crest of the Marist Brothers is the A.M. Monogram. It is fairly certain the monogram had been devised in honour of Our Lady long before the Marist Brothers came into being in 1817. The letters probably stand for Ave Maria (Hail Mary). The twelve stars over the Monogram are derived from Chapter 12 of the Apocalypse. “And a great sign appeared in Heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.” The Church through the ages has accommodated this text to the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin, and the stars are thus symbolic of the role which Our Lady plays in the history of our salvation. Most Marist schools throughout the world use the A.M. Monogram and stars as part of their crest.

National Day Once again, it is that time of the year to celebrate our nation’s independence. It is indeed a special day as Marists gathered to celebrate the nation turning 42 in a sea of red. The day kicked off with some funfilled sports that allowed fellow Marists to be fast not only with their hands and feet but also their brains. The boys ended the day with a memorable lesson in nation building. Every Marist inscribed his blessings for the nation on a NeWater bottlecap. These bottlecaps were lined together to form the Singapore map. In completing an art piece to commemorate National Day, each Marist played a part in “nation building”. This beautiful piece is proudly displayed at the Grandstairs. The mural is titled “I Count”. Teachers-in-charge: Mr Quek Meng Kiang Miss Chen Xinyun

Jubilation was in the air as it was the day our Primary 5 pupils enthusiastically celebrated our nation’s birthday in advance. Bearing the theme, “Celebrate Singapore: City of Possibilities”, this year’s NDP was an extravaganza that engaged the hearts and minds of both the young and old.

total defence day The Tota l Defe nce Day com mem orat ion 2007 kick ed off with a wee klong drama performance on the importan ce of preparedness during the morning assembly. This gradually led to the actual day of commemoration, which was full of surprises for many of our young Marists. Being part of the evacuation exercise, most of our Mari sts were faced with spontaneous situations like fire along the stair ways lead ing to detours and ‘causalities’ among their classmates. The commemorati on escalated during recess as the students were expo sed to wartime food comprising of tapioca and sweet pota to. All in all, the day provided a unique learning experienc e for many.

Racial Harmony DAY This year, the school celebrated Racial Harmony Day in a very special way. A week of traditional games and food were introduced to students of all levels. The actual day event commenced with Singapore’s very own folk dance – CEIMO CEIMO. This was followed by a mini-concert that showcased various traditional costumes. There was a traditional games competition. The day ended with students visiting a special cultural learning carnival at the Hall. The students wrote their reflections on the day’s learning.

On 28 September 2007, pupils and teachers gathered in the school hall. The celebration started with our VicePrincipal reading the Children’s Day message. Next Mr Andrew Kong, a master magician, captivated everyone with many magic tricks. The Parent Support Group also put up three musical items. This was followed by a skit. The pupils were excited to see some teachers, attired in the school PE attire, performing in a hilarious skit. Teachers also presented three musical items. At the end of the day, each pupil was delighted to receive a goodie bag sponsored by the Parents Support Group, and the Children’s Day souvenir, which is a shoe pouch.

INFOCOMMCLUB This year, Infocomm Club members experienced new enrichment programmes apart from mastering Dreamweaver and Flash from our own dedicated trainer, Miss Jacqueline Ho. A parent volunteer Ms Tan conducted 3 workshops: Presentation Skills, Microsoft MS PowerpPoint and Internet Security for members who had a meaningful learning experience as they applied their new skills to work in groups and presented a short research project. To further inspire members, the club organised two learning journeys, a trip to the iFuture Exhibition at the Singapore Science Centre and another to an Infocomm Company at the National University of Singapore Reality Lab. Both trips were good exposures for members to current and future innovations and technologies.
An interesting toy at the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre
From the weekly trainings, members learnt a unique skill to create and design simple animated e-cards and graphics. During the iTel week, a Digital Animation Competition was organised for all members. Although members had only a few weeks of training in Flash, they were able to produce beautiful animations on the theme of racial harmony. Prizes were awarded for Best Overall Piece, Best Animation, Best Concept and Best Design. Since the club started two years ago, vast improvements have been shown by members. They have gained more confidence in manipulating three Graphic and Animation software, and are more competent in general computing skills and internet research.

഼ DILIGENCE Marists must work hard consistently, persevere in the spirit of continuous learning and complete all assignments conscientiously. Confucius says that if a person is idle and not conscientious, it would be difficult to educate him. St. Paul once wrote, “If anyone will not work, let him not eat.” A person who is idle and do not labour with his hands or work his mind will not be successful in his life. Hard work is the key to success and the way to happiness and truth.

NATIONAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
Students were treated to a wide variety of activities during the year to better infuse the importance and relevance of National Education in their lives. Some of the highlights of the Year included International Friendship Day which focused on France and the unique Marist connection with that country. Our National Day celebrations were quite unusual and our Marist students set up stalls and various record breaking events took
2007
place. For Racial Harmony day we watched a thought provoking presentation then reflected in groups how Singaporeans can do their part in Social Defence. Total Defence Day we viewed a war film extract and reflected on the wider issues relating to Singapore. Our NE class ambassadors had a great time bonding with other NE school representatives at the camp.

We watched a film clip about Joan of Arc.

Leavers’ Ceremony: Class of 2007
The theme of Leavers’ Ceremony was “Dreams are what we make them to be”, a line from Corrinne May’s title song of her album “A Beautiful Seed”. Indeed, every Marist was reminded that he was the fruition of a seed that can make an impact on the world out there. The Shaw Hall was illuminated by lanterns hung from wall to wall. It was as if the night sky was brought indoors. The stars were, of course, the Class of 2007. Sublime.

Celebrations
Mothers (and grandmothers) among the Staff and the Parents’ Support Group were treated like the Angels that they are when the school paid homage to them in a special Mothers’ Day get-together. The message was clear: mothers do rock the world! Thanks Mum!

Observance of Maundy Thursday (Lenten theme: Angel In Disguise) “Your friend is your needs answered. He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.” (Kahlil Gibran)
For weeks, Marists created a montage of rainbow colours when they pasted messages of love and care on a simple white board. The result was a symbol of love that expressed itself in the Maundy Thursday Observance as a focus of the event. It was particularly meaningful when the Principal washed the feet of the teachers, who in turn, washed the feet of their students. It was a simple, but unforgettable moment.

Teachers’ Day Celebrations Thirty five contenders competed for the Mr. Cool Marist title during the Teachers’ Day Celebrations. The participants danced their hearts out to the incendiary beat of the latest hiphop hit. It was teamwork and cooperation personified. Friendly rivalry took over when participants outclassed one another when each bopped to his slick, well-rehearsed, choreographed moves. There could only be one winner. Mr. Cool Marist 2007 is Merrill from Sec. 4 Henry. Cool!

Valentine’s Day:
All You Need Is Love
“Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; for love is sufficient unto love.”
(Kahlil Gibran)
The theme of Valentine’s Day was inspired by the heyday of flower power and psychedelia. The message was to spread love all around and what better way to spread that love than to play the Fab Fours’ “All You Need Is Love” to carry that message in a fun-filled but meaningful way. Teachers and students exchanged specially designed cards on Feb 14, the day of the Feast of St. Valentine, writing messages of love and care and affection. More than just being lovey-dovey, these were acts of giving and acceptance.

Welcoming Ceremony and CCA Maze for Sec 1 students Every Sec 1 student was the centre of attraction as each had his face projected on a screen. It was a symbolic gesture, but the message was clear: every Marist counts. When the Marist Oath was recited, the seal was stamped. The Marist journey begins here. Marists and their parents were then invited to view and experience the different Co-Curricular Activities.

Photography is the art of observation. It is our club’s vision to enable Marist photographers to capture with a camera, the significance of the ordinary; it is not just the things they see but the way they see them. This year the club arranged for all Marist photographers to be trained by a professional photographer, Mr Frederick Lee, to equip them with the technical skills. Field trips were also organised so that our photographers could practise what they learned. In addition, Marist photographers were strongly encouraged to participate in external competitions for greater exposure. Our photographers captured a plethora of photographic gems, ranging from portraiture, nature, scenery to the abstract.

勉 DETERMINATION Marists must never give up the strife to achieve and perseverance to overcome obstacles. Marists must encourage and motivate one another. If a person is hardworking, he will acquire wisdom, if he is willing to try his best. When we face difficulties, we must always remind others and ourselves that God is always near and will always guide us. By God’s Grace and through one’s determination, we will definitely surmount our challenges.

Students are to design and make their own vehicle for both the Motorised Vehicle and the Non-Motorised Vehicle category and compete with other schools in terms of speed and design. Our teams came up with interesting designs such as the Car-Chuak (The Cockroach) and the Car-Ki (The Foot) to clinch the Gold and Silver Award in Design respectively. Zephaniah, Samuel Ching, Marcus Quah and Peh Chang Hong from Sec 2 have done well in the event to make our school proud. Kudos to them!!

LOYALTY AND DEDICATION Marists must maintain their loyalty and dedication to the school by upholding her na me and respecting their elders, staff and peers. We should strive for sincerity towards others and devotion to our duties. We must endeavour to do our best in everything we do. We must fulfil our obligations and duties towards our neighbours, society, country and God and not shirk from responsibility. The fruits of loyalty and dedication will be a spirit of self-sacrifice.

勇 COURAGE Marists are to be responsible for their actions, stand up for what is right and learn from their mistakes. Those who have the courage to face trials and tribulations will be successful in life. Courage also means giving way to others who have better ideas. At times, it is about standing up for what is right, even to those in authority. Use your patience, determination and courage to do good deeds. When in a fix, look positively for solutions until your problems are solved. Life is a continuous struggle. Those who can persevere until the end will have eternal happiness.
