Load Chart & Lifting

Use of load chart & lifting

The operator, the machine & the load plays a vital role in lifting. For the machine, the radius of working, boom angle, lifting capacity are a few considerations. The closer the load , i.e. the higher the boom angle

( lesser radius), the GC of load lies close to it & the lif t r em ains st able (balanced). Where as, farther the load, i.e. longer radius, the GC of load lies away from the machine. Even though the load is balanced by simple ma-

chine principle, the stability of lifting depend much on the operators skill. Moreover, the size of the load, site configuration (load, machine, location, operating condition) poses additional challenge to the operator. Machine coupled with operator makes a lift safe. Load chart helps operator to judge the lift & assess the capacity of the machine. Remember, over-side lift is always lesser than other lifts by virtue of the machine configuration. Ensure safe lift always

Boom truck is a much preferred equip- signal man & load movements. ment in construction job, mainly, because of its mobility & easiness. But, if due consideration is not given for the load to be lifted with respect to radius of working, it tends to tip-over very easily. Working both on tyres & outriggers, the load should not exceed the limit specified in the Load Chart. Dragand-lift-load, never be allowed. Before any lift, ensure proper positioning of the truck (surface conditions) & correct lifting tackles. Also operate always from the controls opposite to the side where lifting is planned. Hazard Identification Hazard Identification helps Risk assessment. Many techniques are available but the simplest and easiest to follow is Brain Storming sessions, Fish-bone Analysis ( Cause & Effect ). For identifying the Root cause , generally, a fish-bone (bow -tie) is used to tick out the cause & subsequently to introduce appropriate safety measure to avoid recurrence. In fish-bone analysis, the main hazard & the contributing factors are, one by

one, discussed. The real factor that counts for that hazard is then discounted with a practical safety measure. Thus HAZID technique help reduce accident & improve safety performance.
