We believe that all students can learn the skills to become successful lifelong learners, who will be productive and caring citizens. How “Making Successful Choices and Decisions” Work Making Successful Choices and Decisions is based on the idea that we all

want to be part of a successful group in our homes, communities, and school. Students have the power to choose to be part of a successful school. By recognizing and celebrating successful choices and decisions, we help students want to be even more successful.

Making Successful Choices and Decisions helps by

giving us a fair way to recognize and celebrate the positive things that all students do everyday. It is based on earning Recognition Points for those things they do that meet with M.S.C.D’s expectation. Students only earn points for what they do, not what they don’t do.

Coming to School Coming to the MCSD on time earns points Coming to the MSCD late earns points

5 Recognition 0 Recognition

In class Students in each class have the opprtunity to earn 5 points.

Appropriate Arrival/Punctuality: Getting to class on time earns points

1 Recognition

Behavior: Following the school rules earns 2 Recognition points Participation: Doing all your work earns points

2

Recognition

Most Points for Each Class 5 points

The points are used to recognize student’s for good work. We also have a way to celebrate when a student has earned a specific number of recognition points. We call this the LEVELS. A student can reach four levels. Each level lets a student turn in his/her points in return for celebration awards. We keep track of how many Recognition Points a student earns each week. All learners will receive a Recognition Log (Bank Book) in which his/her Recognition Points will be recorded. As a student reaches a specific number he/she will reach Level I, then Level II, Level III, then—at the highest—Level IV. Again, at each level a student can convert his/her Recognition Points into celebration awards. Students earn a maximum of thirty two (50) points for each day. The breakdown is as follows:

Arrival by 8:10am Period 1 5 points Period 2 5 points

0 or 5 points Recognition Recognition

Period 3 Period 4 Period 5 Period 6 Period 7 Period 8 End of the day Total

5 Recognition points 5 Recognition points 5 Recognition points 5 Recognition points 5 Recognition points 5 Recognition points 5 Recognition points 50 Recognition Points

Note

There are 8 periods each day. So, the most points a student can earn in 8 periods is 40. If a student adds 5 additional points for coming to school on time and 5 additional points for staying in school, the student can earn up to 50 points each day.

50 POINTS IS A PERFECT DAY! “Just Do It! You Can Do It”

The student will then have one week to correct that behavior. At the end of that week the student’s progress will be reviewed. If the student’s behavior improves, he/she will remain on level and will be recognized for making appropriate choices. If the behavior does not improve the student will be placed on a freeze where upon

Conflict Resolution Conflict Resolution is designed to help a student regain control of his/her behavior. Its purpose is to help the student develop more responsible behavior.

When any student chooses CR situation they can not earn points.

There are four types of Conflict Resolution at the Manhattan School for Career Development:

Conflict Resolution 1 (CR1) IN CLASS A student chooses a CR1 situation when he/she refuses to follow the verbal warning of classroom staff. This takes place in the classroom at the student’s desk. A verbal or written plan for rejoining the class activity must be completed.

Conflict Resolution 2 (CR2) IN CLASS If the student continues to choose disruptive or irresponsible behavior he/she will be choosing CR2. This takes place at the student’s desk or in a separate location in the classroom. The student will be given another opportunity in class to write a plan with the assistance of a teacher or paraprofessional.

Conflict Resolution 3 (CR3) IN CR ROOM 509 If the student refuses to complete a CR2 plan and continues to interfere with other student’s opportunities to learn, he/she will be choosing CR3. The student will then be escorted by paraprofessional to CR ROOM 509. A completed Discipline Referral Form must be sent with the student. Note

Remember that points cannot be earned while a student chooses Conflict Resolution (CR).

Conflict Resolution 4 (CR)

CR 4 is for a major behavioral incident which presents a clear and present danger or injury to a student or school personnel, or significant damage to the building. When a student chooses CR 4, the student will be placed on what is the equivalent to a Positive Alternative to School Suspension (PASS). PASS will be held in school at a separate location and the student will not participate in the daily activities of the school. Work will be assigned by the teacher for each day that the student remains in CR 4. The student’s parent/guardian will be notified whenever a student has been placed in CR 4. No points are earned while in CR 4. Appropriate behavior must be demonstrated before a student is returned to class.
