“Isn’t it better to feel that what you have came to you because of something you can do? Set during the Depression, Miller’s moral drama examines the American Dream and questions how one man can fail while another, though no more capable, can proper in life. The play centres upon David Beeves, who is seemingly immune to disaster and wonders when his luck will run out. His good fortune seems to highlight the tragedies of those around him as he tries desperately to find justification for his successes. David’s futile quest for a validation of his identity results in a deepening paranoia that questions the existence of God and meaning of life. Despite encompassing the same great creativity and values identified in his other masterpieces, the Man Who Had all the Luck remained one of Miller’s least known plays until it was revived in 2000 and staged thereafter in several theatre productions. Talented director John Dove, whose previous acclaimed productions at the Lyceum include Miller’s All My Sons (2007) and Death of a Salesman (2004), leads on the creative team in the Lyceum’s first show of the spring season. A strong cast including Andrew Vincent (The Winter’s Tale, Globe Theatre), Peter Harding (Henry V, Royal Exchange), Richard Addison, Greg Powrie and Isabella Jarrett (Faust Part 1 & 2) join with Philip Cumbus (A Month in the Country, Salisbury Playhouse) who will be playing the lead role of David Beeves. The Lyceum also welcome back Kim Gerard and Perri Snowdon from Mary Rose, who will be playing Hester Falk and Amos Beeves, Matthew Pidgeon (The Wizard of Oz, Vanity Fair) as Shory, and Ron Donachie (Six Characters in Search of an Author) as Patterson Beeves.
