Norfolk based Theatre Paradisum premieres their new production at Norwich Playhouse BERTOLT BRECHT’S

MAN IS MAN TRANSLATED BY GERHARD NELHAUS MUSIC COMPOSED BY PAUL DESSAU "Can it really be done?" inquires a soldier. "Changing one man into another?" Theatre Paradisum takes you on an outrageous ride of social commentary, filled with slapstick and variety hall bravado! Following their highly successful production of The Threepenny Opera in 2008, Norfolk-based Theatre Paradisum returns to Norwich Playhouse to perform one of Brecht’s most powerful and funniest plays, MAN IS MAN. Set in colonial India, Man Is Man is the story of a naive dock-worker called Galy Gay, who is tricked and transformed into a ruthless killing machine. Stepping out for ten minutes to buy a fish for dinner, Galy Gay encounters three soldiers from the machine-gun division of the British Army. The soldiers, having lost one of their number during a botched raid on a temple, have been instructed by their sergeant not to return for role-call that evening without their fourth man. Galy Gay, tempted by the soldier’s offers of beer and cheap cigars, agrees to pose as the missing private. But has his wager ultimately cost him more than he realizes? Written between the First and Second World Wars, Man Is Man is one of Brecht’s defining works; seen both as a document of his political humour, as well as the development of his epic theatre. Regarded as a critique of militarism and imperialism, it remains extremely relevant to today's world of conflict and globalisation.
