CHAPTER 1 I. INTRODUCTION 1.1
Background of Study Code Mixing occurs when a person mixes two or more languages in his
speech, so it can be said that someone inserts words in another language when using a particular language. Code mixing occurs when the conversants use both languages together from a single language utterance (Wardhaugh, 1986 : 103 ) . There are several reason for solidarity, respect for certain people and other reasons. In this case , the author will choose the title about “A Study of Code-Mixing in Breakout : Breakout’s All About K-Pop Music Program”, in the science of Sociolinguistic there are some closely related part such as Code switching, Code Mixing, Diglosia and other. The Author interested to learn and review about Code Mixing because the facts found in modern conversation society combines two or more words in the conversation. The author chose the Breakout television program because this program contains a review of indonesian music as well as foreign music . In addition, to that event also many videoclip that make the audience feel entertained and music updates any time. On this ocassion the authors chose “A Study of Code Mixing Code-Mixing in Breakout : Breakout’s All About K-Pop Music Program” because in theme of this program review about development of K-Pop (Korean Pop) music , K-Pop is currently at the high popularity by show their boyband and girlband group that much loved young people. Beside that , the authors are interested in 2
hosts in Breakout , there are Boy William and Sheila Dara the two presenters have a contemporary style of speech and often mix two languages in their speech, which is of interest to the author because not many people use 2 or more languages, and only a few presenters do that. From some theories, the author chose the Muysken theory because this theory uses descriptive method and can explain 3 types of Code Mixing in public conversation. The first step is the process of collecting data, the first is to prepare stationery, and video media Breakout's: Breakout's All about K-Pop that can be uploaded from Youtube Application. After all the equipment is ready, the author starts listening and analyzing the contents of the program's content, especially delivered by the host which is then analyzed using the Code-mixing method. From the background of the study, the author will examine the code - mixing and the types of what are used by the host Breakout: Breakout 's All About K - Pop, because the host in this event is synonymous with contemporary language by mixing two languages/more in the Music program event. 1.2 Statement of The Research Problems In this study, the authors formulated some of the issues that will be reviewed in Breakout: Breakout's All About K-Pop Music Program on the host, as follows: 1. What are the types of Code-Mixing appeared in Breakout: Breakout's All about K-Pop? 2. How does Code-Mixing take place in ?
1.3 Objectives of the study Analyze the Code - Mixing that occurred in the program, in addition to find out the type of code mixing used and the dominant type of what is often spoken by the host in the breakout program. 1.4 Significance of the study From Theoretical, this research is very important because it can increase knowledge and understanding about Sociolinguistic especially Code- Mixing. And the other significance is Practical, this research is very important because it can be a reference for further research related to Code-Mixing and Breakout program, in addition to this research contribute to anyone who wants to learn and practice directly Code-mixing itself. 1.5 Scope and Limitation Scope of this study is Sociolinguistic , this study focused on Code-Mixing from the presenter’s utterencce. The study is limited to the following scopes ,the subjects of this research are Breakout host Boy William and Sheila Dara in Breakout: Breakout's All about K-Pop Music and The object of this research is Breakout program, whether the event contains Code Mixing and the types of code mixing used in the program
CHAPTER 2 II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1 Theoretical Background In this study the authors use Muysken's theory (2000) because this theory can explain the type of Code - Mixing in people's conversations when switching language. When Code Mixing occurs, there are several types that speakers use for maxims and specific purposes. Muysken (2000) writes that the term Code-Mixing refers to all cases where lexical items and grammatical features of two languages appear in one sentence. After that he categorizes the mixing code into 3, as follows: 1. Insertion, of materials (lexical items or intire constituents) from one language into a structure from the other language, Muysken (2000) insertion is view the constraints in terms of the structural properties of some base or matrix structure. 2. Alternation, between structures from language. According to Muysken (2000), this mixing in terms of the compatibility or equivalence of the languuges involved at the switch point. 3. Congruent Lexicalization, of material from different lexical inventories into a shared grammatical structure, in Muysken (2000) the notion of congruent lexicalization underlies the study of style shifting and dialect or standard variation
2.2 Previous Study This research is supported by previous studies that already exist and are associated with Code - Mixing, there are "Mix the Code from the Music Program Host Indonesia in MTV Program" by Nikita (2015). This research uses descriptive method using Hoffman theory (1991), this theory focus in the reason why the host in the event use Code Mixing by separating the type of mixing code type that can be from the data source into 10 kinds of reasons why people use code mixing, in accordance with Hoffman's Theory. And the second previous study is "An Analysis of Code Switching and Code Mixing used in Talk Show Black and White" by Dewi Maya (2015). This study analyzes two types of Code switching and two types of Code Mixing based on Wardaugh theory, these four types can be determined based on the use of more than one language in one utterance. The purpose of this research is to find the types of Code Switching and Code Mixing contained in the speech of Black and White. From the two previous studies analyzing the reasons why someone used Code Mixing and separated mixing code types into 10 different reasons people used Mixing code, other studies focused on two types of code transfer and two types of code mixing and found the language disorder that occurred as a result of the mixed code. While this research focuses on the types of people using code mixing in their utterances, the authors derive similarities in this study is language change, mixing of two or more languages in society used in daily life or only in a certain time and what types it is dominant to use in performing Code Mixing from the initial language / source language to the target language.
CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.1 Research design The research style used is Qualitative method by using Descriptive method according to Whitney (1960), descriptive method is fact finding with correct interpretation, as for characteristic descriptive method as follows: 1. Concentrate on the problems that existed at the time of research conducted or actual problems 2. Describe the facts about the problem being investigated as it is, accompanied by a balanced rational interpretation 3. The research work not only gives an overview of phenomena, but also explains relationships, tests hypotheses, makes predictions, and gets the meaning and implications of a problem. 3.2 Source of Data and Data The data collected in the research about Code Mixing comes from Youtube Videos, after which the author listens to every speech delivered by the host that contains Code-Mixing, here the author chose Boy William and Sheila Dara who hosted of the program theme "Breakout's All About K-Pop Music Program” . The authors chose both the hosts because in each of their speeches they used two languages namely Bahasa Indonesia - English and they showed Code Mixing during the program.
3.3 Data Analysis The first step is to prepare tools to collect data such as stationery, laptop and flashdisk, then listen to and record important things related to Code Mixing, data collected from Video reply from Youtube application, after entering into Youtube application the author searches for the Breakout : Breakout’s all about music program in the search section and chooses which video matches with research. After that the video is moved through the Laptop. After getting data video, the next step is to identify each conversation , identify speech from prsenter containing code mixing from beginning untill end of program. Identifying video the author need of stationery such as ballpoint and notebook to make it easy to collect data in video. And the last step is classify the conversation into Code Mixing Types into Muysken's theory (2000) . By identifying and classifying the conversation, it is possible to know which conversations contain Code - Mixing elements or not.
