Servant Hood Leadership Training
Since Emily was born, we have been adjusting to life in Zambia with three children. She has grown much and is a pleasant little baby who everyone loves to hold. The women in church are often taking turns holding her. In addition, God continues to work with our team to bless the Zambian people. Many great events have occurred since March.

June 2009 Newsletter major step for the church here, because the culture teaches that church leaders should be powerful men who control the church. However, Jesus teaches them to become servants and sacrifice themselves for the good of others. The seminars will continue for 2 months each year. The first seminar (April) was taught by the missionaries in English. The second seminar (September) will be taught in Kiikaonde by those who attended the first seminar. The long term goal is that the Zambian leaders will be the main teachers and they will be able to train each other each year.
Summer Campaigns
Rick teaching the young church leaders at the April Servant Hood Seminar In April, the mission team invited 20 young church leaders to attend 4 weeks of classes. They lived here on the center property during the month. All the funding for their food and lodging was provided by the Zambian people so this would be a sustainable school where they will teach each other in the future. April’s classes were about following Jesus. The young men learned much and we could see their attitude change to become more servant minded. This is a
Each summer Hillcrest Church of Christ sends campaigners to Mumena to do various projects. In addition to the campaigners, five interns from Abilene and Harding have also come this summer. The campaigns are the main way that Christians from the supporting churches can get directly involved with the work here. Please pray that God will use the campaigners to teach more people about God. The largest campaign will be a three day gospel meeting at five locations. During one day of the gospel meeting at each location, the people will also learn about HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and other preventative health topics.

Two months ago, a serious problem occurred at Kankua church. A man named Sawanda was one of the first converts there, but he was very domineering. Bart Bruington studied with him for over a year to try to help him change his attitude, but he refused to change. Every Sunday, he would sit at the front of the church like the boss and teach false teachings. Finally, after studying and warning him many times, the church decided to disfellowship him. Even his first born son, Gladson, left him. Because Sawanda owned the church building, they let him have the building. They were hoping that by being cut off he would change. The church got a new plot of land and established a new meeting place. The day they were clearing the new ground, forty other people from the community came to help because they knew what had happened with Sawanda.

He did not go to the police but continued to pray for his father’s heart to change. He continued to love his family even while they attacked him. Gladson’s faithfulness greatly encouraged the church. Every week, more people are coming because they have seen the power of Christ’s love. Many men who had previously left the church because of Sawanda have now returned. Although he intended evil, God has done great good. Sawanda continues to be alone in his own darkness. Please pray for him that his arrogance can be broken and that he can truly repent and come to God. Also, pray for the church that they will continue to spread God’s truth and love each week.
