Lay guide Information: - Importance and use of the lay guide Benefit: - Advanced production quality - Reduction of errors

The lay guide is decisive for the quality of the entire production. The lay guide must be met both during the printing and the finishing processes, because it guarantees the squareness and register accuracy of the product. If the lay guide is not observed a quality impairment is inevitable. Let us start with the printed sheet to recognize the origin of the lay guide. The printed product is given its final shape in the finishing process. The desired final processing must be taken into account already when the printed product is designed. A troublefree production must be considered already at the prepress stage. This is why the required cutting marks, folding marks and lay marks must be added in prepress. lateral and front lay side

The sheet is aligned in the printing press true to register. At the front lay marks the sheet is aligned against the gripper margin, on the sides, the pull-type or side lay marks are meant to align the sheet. The precise alignment of the sheets is being monitored.

printed side lay mark

The printer usually marks the lay guide on the sheet. The most elegant solution is to print the side lay mark as well. This shows the cutting machine operator where to place the paper. Another way is to mark the pallet with a pencil.

This identification can be easily recognized. In general, the proneness to errors is reduced when every single sheet is marked. The lay guide is the first indication for the future finishing process. Before starting any jogging, cutting or folding process the operator must know where the lay guide is. Prior to cutting the printed sheets must be positioned on the jogger with precisely aligned edges. Depending on the lay guide the jogger table an be tilted in four different positions, either to the right or left sides. Depending on the direction of inclination the jogger motor's direction of rotation is automatically switched over in order to improve the alignment. The jogging intensity is infinitely variable for different kinds of materials.

As a general rule the first cut is made on the long side opposite the front lay mark. This increases the cutting precision and allows to correct the printed image with the swivel backgauge. After that, the cut edge of the paper stack is used as a lay guide. The cut side is placed against one of the side gauges. The drawings show the first two cuts of a printed sheet with the lay guide on the right-hand side.

Lay marks and Fixomat Especially when handling large sizes or dealing with heavy inking, there will always be a certain distortion in the printed sheet. In other words, the outer edges of the sheets become somewhat crowned or are no longer square. The material appears to tip from one side to the other and the lay guide results unstable. July 2006

For this purpose, joggers are equipped with lay marks and high-speed cutters can be equipped with Fixomat. Thanks to these movable lay marks the paper is no longer placed against the full surface, but against some points only which imitate the front and side lay marks in the press. This ensures precise jogging and cutting processes. It is therefore decisive that the point-type lay marks are not only used in the jogger, but also in the cutting machine. lay marks

When the Fixomat function is used the cutting machine automatically takes the backgauge position into account. The control system recognizes the requested function and automatically adjusts the effective backgauge position with the lay marks lowered or lifted. The correct use of the lay guide and its maintenance throughout the cutting process is a prerequisite for the quality of the product after cutting. Fixomat

POLAR offers: - Automatic joggers with lay marks* - Fixomat provides point-type lay marks for the material being cut - Machine functions that provide for ergonomic working *Please compare the technical data relevant for the individual machine models
