: I can sympathize with our reader; I can remember when building my first home nearly 30 years ago I struggled trying to get an understanding of heat loss. As a builder I found the seminars

You will not contain all of the heat in an average home. You must have some air exchange and even the best built energy efficient homes have heat recovery ventilators installed to bring in fresh air and exhaust stale air

and courses to help me. Let’s start with a basic understanding of heat flow. Forget the myth that heat only rises, heat will flow in any direction out of a home. As a form of energy it flows from warm to cool. We use temperatures to measure the amount of heat energy. Heat will travel to any area where there is a differential in the temperature. Heat will not always radiate to the coldest spot, rather it will go to any area that has less heat. The

Heat moves in different ways, conduction, convection and radiation. Conduction heat moves from hot to cold. For example, if you grab a warm cup of coffee the heat of the cup quickly tells you the cup is hot. The theory of fibreglass insulation is that it reduces this movement with tiny pockets of air in the batts that are poor conductors of heat. Convection is the movement of air and how it moves from hot to cold. Your furnace is a simple example of forced convection when you move the warm air around inside your home. Radiation is commonly understood, if you stand in the sun, you get burned by radiation. Heat loss is the measure we use to establish the amount of

heat required to warm a building of a certain size and external walls. If you take a simple four sided rectangular bungalow it may cost 1000.00 a year to heat. If you take the same building and change the floor plan to arrive at a multiple number of exterior walls, yet still have the same square footage it is commonly know this can increase the heat loss by 20%. This is why having a heat loss calculation done if you are sizing your home for a new furnace or air conditioner is a good idea. The two terms, R-Factor and RSI value are often referred to in the same breath, R-Factor is the imperial scale and RSI is the metric conversion. There is no difference here. A lot of insulation is sold with both terms on the packaging. The ability of certain insulation

materials to resist the flow of heat is measured in thermal resistance and this is how the “R” is measured. For example a conventional fibreglass batt has the R factor of 3.5 per inch. Loose fill fibreglass has an “R” factor of 2.9 per inch. A conventional fibreglass batt for a 2x4 frame home has an R12 factor, these batts are just over 3 ?” thick. Today we recommend a minimum wall “R” factor of R20 and your attic should be no less than R32 and R40 would be preferred. When you are figuring out insulation levels, stick with one term or the other, it can get confusing very quickly. One suggestion I think would help our reader is to contact his local EcoEnergy Provider. This program is latest update from the original EnerGuide

Car owners who defy the bylaw, risk receiving a fine of up to $40, or possibly having their vehicle towed. Residents are also reminded that parking in the middle of a cul-de-sac is also prohibited at all times. The parking prohibition remains in place until the end of March, 2009.

W

hen it comes to the holidays, tradition tends to reign supreme. Be it when a family opens their presents, where they open those presents or what they eat for dinner, customs rule the roost for most.

A tradition many families share during the holidays is the annual holiday party. An informal way of getting together with family and friends, a holiday party is a time for people to let loose during a season where friends and good cheer go hand in hand. However, as any local police force can attest, some tend to overdo it at holiday parties and the results can be anything but jolly.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the average number of fatalities in crashes involving at least one impaired driver was 40 percent higher for the Christmas holiday period than the rest of December in 2006, and 60 percent higher for the New Year's Day holiday period that same year. Those statistics illustrate the tendency for people to let their alcohol consumption get out of control during the holiday season, a potential problem not only for those driving the roads this holiday season, but those hosting parties as well.
