kadar (about; as...as; until; by; as far as; ) kadar is a postposition which corresponds in meaning to the following English words or structures: 1- kadar means ‘about’, ‘some’ or ‘approximately’: Hakan bir yıl kadar bu şirkette çalıştı. (Hakan worked at this company for about one year.) On, on beş kadar misafir bekliyoruz. (We are expecting some ten or fifteen guests.) 2- kadar is used to show comparison and corresponds in meaning to ‘as…as’: Bu bıçak kılıç kadar keskin. (This knife is as sharp as a sword.) Koray, aslan kadar güçlüdür. (Koray is as strong as a lion.)
3- kadar follows the words like benim, senin to form the phrases below: benim kadar = as…as me senin kadar = as…as you
onun kadar = as…as him/her/it sizin kadar = as…as you bizim kadar = as…as us onlar kadar = as…as them
Mehmet senin kadar güçlü değil. (Mehmet is not as strong as you.)
Ali de bizim kadar heyecanlı. (Ali is as excited as us too.)
Ben onun kadar zeki değilim. (I am not as clever as him/her.)
Sen benim kadar kilolu değilsin. (You are not as overweight as me.)
4- kadar means ‘until/till’, ‘by’, ‘as far as’ or ‘in (an hour, a few days, etc.)’ when used with the dative case (-e/-a): Sabaha kadar ders çalıştık. (We studied till morning.)
Pazar’a kadar projeyi bitireceğim. (I will finish the project by Sunday.)
Göle kadar yürüdük. (We walked as far as the lake.)
Bir saate kadar döneceğim. (I will be back in an hour.)
5- kadar can be used with bu/şu/o to form the quantifiers below: bu kadar = this much
şu kadar = that much
o kadar = so much
Annemi o kadar seviyorum ki… (I love my mother so much that…) Note: See also the unit about ne kadar.
