Busy Summer of Youth Ministry By Robbi Kinnaird, Youth Ministry Moderator This has been an exciting summer for the youth ministry program at First Christian Church. Through two mission trips, 60 youth and adult sponsors travelled to Lake Charles, Louisiana to assist Week of Compassion in their efforts to rebuild areas devastated by recent hurricanes. While some stripped floors and painted walls, others learned to drywall, lay tile, install windows and doors, and more! And they all shared together in worship and service to those in need. We participated in the annual Edmond 4th of July Parade and took home 5th place in our division; and a group of 27 youth, college students and sponsors floated the Illinois River.

Among all of these activities, we continue to meet on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings for Bible study and fellowship. As we move into the end of summer and start planning for Dive-In, Back-toSchool and Fall projects, there are a few changes in the program. We’ll be saying farewell to one of our college interns, Israel Ragle. Israel has accepted the position of Youth Minister at First Christian Church in Kingfisher and will be leaving us at the end of July. While we will miss her energy, creativity and leadership, we wish her the very best in this new position and as she continues to grow in her ministry.

We Welcome Mark Taylor as Full-Time Staff! Our other youth intern, Mark Taylor, will remain part of the Youth ministry, but in a new capacity. We are pleased to announce that beginning August 16 Mark will be with us as a full time staff member. Mark will assume a new hybrid position at the church that will be a combination of youth ministry and media/technology ministry. In addition to his roles in youth ministry, Mark will work with our Communications Ministry to expand our online media presence, including podcasting, video production, and social media tools, and he will provide IT support for video projection, networking, and computers. Like I said – exciting summer! And, even more to look forward to this Fall. First Christian is truly blessed with smart, caring and dedicated youth. It is the goal of the Youth Ministry Program to encourage and guide these young people into a personal relationship with Christ and each other through study, worship and fellowship. We look forward to a fruitful 2009-2010 year!

Hearing God Through Others - Laity Sunday 2009 Minister’s Message by Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister Laity Sunday has been a tradition at our church, and many other churches, for years. It is a chance to witness and celebrate the talent and dedication we have in the local congregation. Our church celebrates the ministry of all of our members in many ways. Of course, we recognize ordained ministry—that of the elders and ordained ministers—but all of us are called by God. Laity Sunday is also a chance to hear other voices in our congregation. This year we are fortunate to have two wonderful speakers who have agreed to share sermons with us. Bill Medley is an attorney in private practice. Bill has been a member for almost seven years. In his practice he is familiar with speaking to juries, but speaking to congregation members will be a new challenge. Steve Allison is in sales (yes, toilet paper is his thing!) and he also has extensive speaking experience in his line of work. Both recognize the unique opportunity to share the gospel in a worship setting. I volunteered to meet with both Steve and Bill to discuss the sermons and to provide some help where they might need it, especially in interpretation of scripture or to answer any questions about the text that they might have. What I discovered was a pleasant surprise. Neither one needed much help. They had great ideas that provided some real insight into faith and what the scripture says. I know Bill and Steve both have special messages to deliver. But my guess is they are not alone. We all have good news to share. We don’t have to do it from the pulpit on Sunday in front of the whole congregation. Many times our best sermons are “preached” by our actions. I know those have been the “sermons” that have touched me the most in my life. As we celebrate Laity Sunday, let us remember that we are all preachers. Sometimes we just do it in different ways.

Where do we get the word, “Laity”? Word Origin (etymology): lay (adjective): Middle English 15th century, from Old French lai, from Late Latin laicus, from Greek laikos (of the people), from laos (the people). 1. lay people rather than clergy: the followers of a religion who are not clergy. 2. laity (LAY-uh-tee) (noun): the people who are not members of a particular profession, especially those who are not part of the clergy, such as “gifts of the laity….”
