Simplified Directions Minister’s Message by Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, Associate Minister Don’t you just love satellite imaging and global mapping? It’s so easy to Google someone’s home address and immediately print out a map showing exactly where that person lives and what the home looks like from the street. Some of you can even type that address into your car’s global positioning system (GPS) and let some automated voice guide you turn-byturn to the desired location. I don’t have one of those devices; partly because I find that voice more than a bit annoying, and often geared to some route longer than I’d prefer. Then, when I take my preferred route, that “voice” becomes frustrated and starts yapping at me: "Recalculating." As you have already learned, I like the most direct path. Keep it simple— straight lines; less talk; less time. The biblical material known to us as Ephesians is a little bit like a global positioning system. It’s quite detailed, navigating the early Church through

the winding paths of critical rules for Christian living. Chapter 4 alone is filled with principles: It has lots of “do this, don’t do that; say this, don’t say that; act like this, and don’t act like that.” But finally, the writer suggests a simpler design: “as beloved children, imitate God and live like Christ” (Ephesians 5:1). Now, that’s what I’m talking about—simple, and to the point. Difficult? Yeah. But direct and to the point. Those two suggestions take a

litany of principles and reduce them to two, very clear, life models. Granted, replicating those models is more than difficult. But, remembering them and keeping them before us as marks of the Christian—as standards—is a lot easier than remembering that litany of rules. Thanks again for the privilege of sharing with you the commitment to “imitating God” and “living like Christ”—especially in love. Amen.
