A Penny for your Thoughts Lab Lab Date: 10.13.09

Purpose To transform a copper penny into gold with provided materials, later discuss what happens. I believe that the penny will transform to gold going through a physical change. Procedure Data We transformed a penny from its original color into silver then to gold. This was done by using hot zinc mixed with 3M sodium hydroxide and a Bunsen Burner. We obtained a successful result in transforming our penny into gold. Conclusion In conclusion, my hypothesis was partly right. We could demonstrate how the penny can change it physical form from one color to another. The penny was able to change color thanks to the chemical reaction zinc had with the sodium hydroxide. The penny only change in the outside but it is the same inside. Discussion of Theory The penny only changed its color everything else was the same. The purpose was not as appointed, that it will transform to gold, it only change its color, the value of the penny did not raise, so color was the only thing affected. Error Analysis We did not have any kind of error, but Mrs Ramirez warned us of a possibility of errors since she did not mix the chemicals as they should.
