’ I ST News Corridor ’ is the newsletter of Institute of Space technology, Islamabad, giving an insight into the activities of The IST team. This newsletter is published by SSME (Sky hawks society of motivated engineers) of IST as an official venture to spot all the on-going and upcoming events at the institute.

The Spring Festival,2008 A colorful Spring Festival was arranged by the department of Student Affairs, headed by Mr. Najam Naqvi, in junction with the different student student on 19th April. The day was full of joyous activities The event seemed to be a close-up of the year’s best fascinating programs providing the crust of enjoyment and attraction as a whole. E-Gaming Society organized a Counterstrike 1.6 Competition in which 8 teams participated which included four teams from each department.Aero 3 & CSE 3 qualified for the final but shared first position among themselves. At this occasion, The IST Environmental Club arranged a Tree Plantation event on “ Own a Tree ” basis. The IST Students & Faculty, both took part in tree plantation The Students had a great time while watching movies, one after another in the auditorium. Illusionist and Shooter were the most favorite. Kite Flying was the enthralling segment of the Festival Day. The students were divided into two teams, the Aerospace and the communication Systems departments. Plenty of colors' shadowed the whole ground as well as air until the very darkness of the evening. Bhangra on the drum beats and Dances on the music played by the DJ, made the evening memorable for all the Istians. The segment of Song Dedications was exciting equally for girls and the boys. Student Astronomy club arranged an astro-night. Mr.Waqas A. Qazi delivered introductory lecture about the operation and handling of telescope. The telescope was installed at the roof top of the campus main building, where the students, sighted moon and planets. The event was not the first one of its kind, rather it was in continuation of various astro-nights held in past. Mr. Iftikhar Mehmood and Dr. Khalil were invited as the chief guests of the Evening. They themselves joined students in their activities and applauded the interest of students in the co-curricular activities. The last segment of day was the Prize Distribution Ceremony, in which Dr. Khalil handed over the prizes to the winner teams and the outstanding players of Different competitions of the Day.

IST Participation in Drama Festival at GIKI
The students of IST had a heyday on 20th April, when their skit-theme and the performance was applauded by the audience present on the occasion of Drama Festival at GIKI. The Drama team was lead by Mr.Umar Masood, the faculty member of the aerospace department of IST. The students had a great time at GIKI, as there were many new and exciting things for them to acquaint with. In fact, this was great achievement for the Dramatics Society of IST.
Solemnities of 12 Rabi-ul-Awal:Eid Milad-un-Nabi 12 Rabi-ul-Awal is a sacred day for the Muslims. To show respect and love for Allah and His Prophet (SAW), ILS organized a Naat, Qirat and Essay Writing Competetion. The response of students was quite encouraging. The beautiful verses recited in melodious voices sounded as bells from heaven . The winner of Naat Competition was Danish Rehman of batch 4 whereas . Shuja Ur Rehman of batch 4 won the Qirat competetion. Faizan Abbas of Batch 06 was declared the winner of Essay writing Competition.
IST Triumphs Best Design Competition of 3rd DBFC at GIKI The Design Build & Fly Competition (DBFC) is an event that is sponsored by STEM Career Project which is a joint venture of HEC and PAEC for grooming talented students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics all over Pakistan. Previously IST has a record of wining top positions and this year with the spirit of victory and creativity of innovative designs the students of IST participated in the competition held on 30th March,2008. IST’s ‘Extreme Machine’ team (Zaka Muhammad, Sikander Moten , Mohsin Manzoor, Ahmad Bilal,Hafiz Sabih, Farooq Hayder) won the best innovative design prize keeping the traditions of not lettting IST’s name fall down in the prize distribution. Vice Chancellor Brig.Imran Rehman appreciated the efforts of students who participated in the competition.

GAT workshop By Mr.Waqas A. Qazi
“Striving for Excellency is soothing, but for perfection, it is discouraging”
Mr.Waqas Qazi, the faculty member of the Aerospace Department, has a record of scoring 92/100 marks in GAT. He has also been awarded with fullbright scholarship for PhD. In order to motivate students to appear in GAT, Students Affairs Department scheduled an introductory lecture by Mr.Qazi . During the Workshop, he shared some important points regarding the techniques for preparation of GAT, with the students. The other faculty members were also present on the occasion.
National Defense University Delegate Visited IST A delegation of Officers and Faculty members of Armed Forces War College, National Defense University visited the Institute of Space Technology, IST, Islamabad on 17th January, 2008. Delegate was briefed by Mr. Ayaz Aziz ,Director Academics, IST about the achievements of the institute and presented the future plans of the Institute. Maj Gen Shahid Iqbal, HI (M) applauded the contribution of IST in the field of academics and especially in the demanding field of Space Technology.
Visit of City School to IST IST was visited by the CITY School on 17th Aril,2008 . The students were introduced to the various departments of the Institute. Introductory sessions were conducted by the Various Faculty members in order to provide basic information about the field of space technology. Students also had the chance to see sophisticated equipment available in the laboratories . Prototype of the different satellites launched in past by Suparco, clinched the interest of students. The tour proved to be very informative for the students.

Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology Visited IST H.E Dr. Muhammad Mahdi Zahedi, Minister of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran, along with two deputy Ministers visited the Institute Of Space Technology, IST Islamabad on 3rd April, 2008 for initiating joint collaborative projects in the field of Space Sciences and Technology. Mr. Ayaz Aziz, Director Academics, IST briefed the honorable guests about the Academics, Research and the on-going projects at the Institute. Mr. Zahedi praised the vision of the institute and ensured to send delegations from the universities of Iran to visit IST in order to establish fruitful collaboration in the field of space technology.
IST Faculty Member to Meet Nobel Laureates in Germany Institute of Space Technology is proud to have one of its young faculty members selected for the annual meeting of Nobel Laureates in Germany. Mr. Waqas A. Qazi, a faculty member of Department of Communication Systems at IST, has been selected to represent Pakistan in the 58th Meeting of Nobel Laureates (Physics) at Lindau, Germany, in June 2008. The purpose of the annual Lindau Meetings is to sustain and promote world knowledge by inspiring and motivating young researchers and graduate students to pursue careers of research. Throughout the years, the Lindau meetings have served as a base to provide all participants with exceptional opportunities to take part in valuable scientific and personal contacts, irrespective of and beyond national and cultural boundaries. A total of 8 young researchers / graduate students have been selected from Pakistan this year for this highly competitive award, after a rigorous selection procedure which involved interviews by a panel containing many eminent Physicists of Pakistan. The Pakistan contingent for the Lindau Meeting will be sponsored by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Higher Education Commission (HEC), and the Council of Nobel Laureates Meetings in Lindau. The sponsorship includes all funding (travel, boarding, lodging etc.) for one week at Lindau, Germany, interaction with 15-20 Nobel Laureates in Physics and about 500 fellow participants from over 50 countries, and visits of some renowned Physics research centers in Germany.

5 Km Marathon
After the monotonous busy schedule of studies, the Event of Marathon brought some excitement on the faces, diminishing the probe of boredom. In this awake, the recent 5KM Marathon was arranged on 25th March,2008.This was the intra-university Event and had the participants both from the category of students and the Faculty . Overall, the Communications Systems Department (CSE) was declared as the winner . Mudassir Nazar from Batch-05 (Aero) was declared the best athlete in Boys, whereas Sara Mansoor from Batch-04 (CSE) got the event in girls.
Senior Students’ Industrial Visit To Karachi Industrial visits are a must to do for engineering students to broaden their understanding. In this regard, The Institute of space technology arranges frequent industrial visits to different organizations. A series of visits at Karachi were arranged for the final year students (batch 03) from 1-10th of march 2008. The major organizations visited during this tour are
Satellite Research and development center Karachi (SRDC-K) Pakistan Machine tool factory Karachi (PMTF-K) Siemens Karachi Atlas Honda Karachi
These visits gave students an insight into the research ,design and development progress going on in the country. Also ,the students were able to see real time machining ,embedding and testing techniques being used in different parts of the industry.
Senior Students’ Visit to SRDC-L and PAC The students of batch-03 visited Suparco SRDC Lahore in order to acquaint with the latest information regarding the on-going satellite project at SRDC-L. They also had a visit to Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Kamra to have a glance on the work and progress of the related field. The tours were aimed to let the students assess their progress of assigned final year projects.

Movie Competition Organized by ILS A movie competition was organized by IST Literary Society (ILS) .The movies were quite a good effort from students and showed their interest in such activities. Many hidden talents were discovered. Students came up with different and innovative ideas. "Khaak Ka Putla" directed, edited and performed by batch-5 got 1st prize, 2nd prize was also awarded to batch-5 for "Aik Din Bablo Kay Saath". 3rd prize was given to a documentary " Hamein Sochna Hoga" by Batch-4.
Cricket Tournament held on 25th March at IST Truly said, Pakistani nation is crazy about cricket. Same passion reflects from the young and energetic students. Every year, a departmental tournament is arranged. In this year, it was played in the month of march. There was a show of strong game from both sides, but overall the Communications Systems Dept. was the ruling one. Abdullah Khan of Batch-05 was given the title of the man of the tournament.
Evolution of New Societies Many new societies have evolved at the campus , each with an idea to help the ISTIANS prove their best in the interested field. Environmental Club: to work for the environmental issues not only within campus but also in the surrounding areas. The Club organized tree plantation during spring festival celebrations. Dhanak: A society for girls at IST to help them in different aspects. IST Philosophical Society: to encourage students as well as faulty to discuss different philosophical issues with their fellows. Blood Donors’ Society: started with an aim to help the people by donating blood to those in need of it.
A Trip To Thandyani In February, a Recreational trip was arranged for Thandyani. It is at a height of 2700 meters (8800 ft), above sea level on a small plateau surrounded by pine forests and offers a breath taking scenery . Buses packed with students of all batches, left for the point at 9 in morning. The day was pleasant. After a beautiful and memorable travel of 3 hours, their hearts were filled with delight, when they saw mountains and pine trees covered with shinning snow. Hiking and Snow-fights were the most cheerful moments . Especially, the surprise meal for students added to their appetite.

April 28: Still Aircraft Model competition A still model aircraft competition was organized by SSME. The event aimed at enhancing the creative abilities of the students and enhance their knowledge about capabilities of different aircrafts. Ten Teams from different Batches took part in the competition. Mohsin Khalil of Batch 4 won the competition. Ahmad Bilal and Muhammad Imran were named second where as Mohsin Manzoor secured the third prize. Dr. Khalil Awan distributed the prizes among the winners at the end of competition .
Representation at Educational Fairs IST has participated in educational fairs held in different parts of the country. The latest in this case were Beacon House Educational Fair at Margalla campus Islamabad and PIEE educational Fair at Islamabad , Lahore and also at Karachi.
