listen to me mumbling about crap? Hehe.... Do you reckon anyone likes us there in New Zealand? Yeah man, you've got quite an audience here.
With the Dragonforce concert about to happen, we present one of our most entertaining interviews ever – our discussion with Sam Totman, ex resident of New Zealand, and guitar virtuoso.
Hi Sam how are you? Awwrgh.... (mumbling) So, what's happening? Not much man! We had to get up early this morning to interview you, but we had a few coffees and now we're up for it. Aww right... We is on the piss anyway... Fuck it's 11 o'clock here... 10 actually. Huh, should be fun interview then! Is everyone there with you?
Awerghr... (inaudible) Fuck I don't know man. I reckon sooner or later, well this is my theory anyway... Even though people would think we are 80ish, but it's not really... But maybe the kids would think that it's cool! Know what I mean? Like they got these 70s bands like The Datsuns... And it's cool... Know what I mean? Maybe they'll think it's funny to be 80s or something. Oh... mwargh (mumbles) fuck... So, Sam, you're born in England, but you grew up in New Zealand, right? Mm. I moved over there when I was about 4 or something. So what made you go back to England? Fuck I don't know. I couldn't really score any birds in New Zealand. Hehe... More luck in the UK?
Yeah, yeah... stupid guitar player standing there in his undies actually. And a singer... We were about to have a band practice, cuz we're playing this thing in Sweden... So yeah, what you wanna know?
A little bit, but not much. Hehe...
Everything! The latest album been out for a while, how do you feel about it?
Well, it's picking up to be honest. It's quite surprising, cuz fuck, now I'm even older than I was before. It's funny that now that we sold a few CDs, it's getting a bit easier. I left New Zealand when I was about 22, and we basically fucking nailed all the ones in Wellington that were nailable, which is about probably 3 for me (chuckles) and I was like fuck, it's a bit of a waste of time staying here.
Ah, it's pretty cool... Fuck I don't know man haha. We seem to get decent amount of people at the shows... It's pretty cool actually. So how's New Zealand there? That place, Powerstation still going?! Yeah, it was called “Oracle” for a while though. Yeah fuck we used to do gigs at Powerstation and then everyone was like “Eeewww you fucking Westies.” We were from Masterton actually. Hey, is this on the radio, can I say swear words? You just go for it man. We don't really care about broadcasting standards. Yeah I imagine. How many people would want to
04
Got a whole bunch of groupies hanging around you?
So where are the cutest girls in the world? Well, the funny thing is, every place we played at, say if you scored with bird, we say “Yeah man, this place kicks ass! And yeah fucking Germany is cool!” And if you don't it's like, fuck this place is crap! But then you obviously won't get any more than fucking one if you're as ugly as fucking me... I don't know hehe. So the best place is the easiest place. Surprisingly, it's England at the moment. You'd think
it's Europe, cuz they don't speak fucking English, so they don't realise our jokes aren't fucking funny! Ok, so all your songs are pretty long. Do you have any problems with radio play because of that?
Lager or something, you know in black cans? And also that Victoria or something. And there also was that “Brew your own spirits” thing in Wellington. We used to get down there and buy a bottle of port for like $8. Yeah, and you're away. You've been in a few bands here in NZ.
Na, they just don't play it at all! (laughs) So it's not really a problem!
Yeah I was in that band called “Carnage” when I was 18. And you know Head Like A Hole? Yeah I used to play with that drumming dude with blond dreadlocks.
Another thing we were gonna ask you, the music is reallyreally fast! No studio gimmicks or anything, that's how fast you guys play? Yeah... Well I mean it's the same speed as Slayer or something like that.
We heard they were pretty Satanic people that Head Like A Hole...
What's the secret of playing that fast without making heaps of fuck-ups?
Naah, they're pretty gay actually. Hehe. Yeah and I also played with this band Demoniac. It was pretty funny, cuz with Demoniac we went on tour n'shit in Europe, and everybody thought we were gonna be really evil. We were like all painted with black makeup, looking evil. I used to go down to the fucking studio on my skateboard haha. That's not very evil at all!
Aaaaahh... I don't know man. Practice your guitar or something... Hehe.
You've got a bit of that English/Kiwi crossover accent going...
So what are you guys drinking over there and what are you drinking when you're in New Zealand?
Yeah, I know! I'm fucking bummed out actually! I'm turning into a cunt! Ah well.... What can you do? There's few more fucking birds in the UK who can fucking put up with my fucking hilarious jokes... I'm fucking sick of it actually. Gonna come back to New Zealand, fucking retire. Yeah, I'm not even fucking joking. In about 5 years it's fucking time to settle down, have some kids. (laughter in background)
And you guys can replicate it live, no problem at all? We'll give it a go anyway. Wouldn't probably sound exactly the same, cuz we're jumping around and stuff.
I'm drinking some local beer. It's actually pretty queer, it's only 4.1% It's gay, I know. And when I was in New Zealand I was drinking pretty much whatever was cheapest. What I'm really looking forward to is fucking Tui and... what's that other one called? Double Brown? Well DB is good when the time is tough. It was like $12 for a dozen. Do you still got that... New Zealand
How many albums are you gonna put out before then? Probably fuck all. Haha.
05
What's the scene like in England?
He's done well!
I don't know... I don't go out that much. I'm gonna go out tonight, actually, time to fucking get some action! Haha. Probably won't.
(Sam In the background): I'm a bit nervous. Herman: At least he's not fucking on TV! So you don't care about the swear words?
What's your plan for getting “the action”? Well, I'm gonna go out, get really pissed and stand there doing the pelvic thrust motion, and pick the birds up 15 years younger than me. Hahahaha... And fucking say “Whatcha think about that?” The usual routine. Then I'm gonna go home, bash one out... hehehe... and fucking on to the next day. Haha. While they're around, do any of the other band members wanna talk to us?
Nah, not really. Herman: Yeah, otherwise there'd be nothing left there! That's what Sam does, he thinks it's fucking cool or something. Ok, I got nothing else to say, so I'll pass you back to Sam, otherwise he's just getting pissed there. Sam: Hey man! I'm a bit shy, I'm a bit nervous. But oh well, I'm doing my best. So, Sam, you're becoming a bit of a celebrity these days, doing headlining tours n'all. How do you guys feel about it? Yeah fuck... I'm still a bit worried if anyone's gonna fucking turn up. But I think they will! What are your favorite bands, Sam? Oooh.... Fuck I don't know. Anything with good melody... I don't know. So what's the last CD you bought, then?
I don't know I'm gonna ask 'em. (Covering the phone) Oi, any of you homos wanna talk to these cunts? (Into the phone) Herman Li wants to say something. Herman: That's why this guy was banned from doing most interviews.
Ummmmmm.... Fuck.... Trying to think... I bought DIO “Greatest Hits.” I bought it for my missus, it was on special for £5. I only bought it cuz it was cheap and I thought it'd shut her up for another year.
Man, he's a hard case!
Ok, would you give us a message to the New Zealand fans of DragonForce? We know quite a few people who can't wait to see you!
Herman: Yeah, he's a fuckwit. This is his first ever phone interview.
REALLY???? Fucking Hell!! Ok. To the New Zealand
06
FAaaaaaaaN, whoever it may be... Hehehe. I think there's only one. Actually it's probably you. Us? Nah, not really. Hehehe... Alright. So... I thought I already said a message to them before? Say another one. Aaah.... Eeeeh... Fucking hell... (covering the phone) When they say “What's your message to the fans,” what do you say? Herman Li (in background): Fuck, you can do the standard bullshit every band do. Like “Hey man, fuck, we can't wait to come play there...” Sam: Yeah, ok. We love the fans in New Zealand! You guys are the best and we love you and we can't wait to come and play for you! (laughter in background) But everyone knows it's a load of SHIT!
Actually we think, if you bought our CD, you are fucking cool... and you're probably all fucking gay. Hehehe. (laughter in background). I'm just trying to think of something interesting to say. Alright. If any of them who bought our fucking CD are fucking female, you can suck my COCK! Hahaha. (hysterical laughter on background) And if they're blokes, I'll bum them. (more laughter) Aaaah... And if you got any fucking.... Aaahhh.... Ooohh... Fuck... I don't know, I can't think of anything interesting to say! That's quite enough, it's fine, man! Ok. I'll bum all our fans, that's the final verdict. Hahaha. Thanks heaps for the interview, man! Yeah, I'll try something more interesting next time. And when I'm there, get in touch and we'll meet up in a bar somewhere. And I'll bum you! g

been here before? What do you expect from the country and the gig?
With Vanishing Point announced to support Dragonforce for their NZ tour, we spoke briefly with a very eager Silvio Massaro, obviously stoked that the band is coming over to play!
First of all, what's the latest news from VP? What have you been up to lately? Well, a lot has happen since we spoke last ....apart from having great success with “Embrace The Silence” we have been doing some shows with Gamma Ray and Zakk Wylde and the Black Label Society....we also have a new line up with Christian Nativo on Drums and Adrian Alimic on Bass, both are amazing players and are fitting in very nicely with the sound scape of the band. So it's been 2 years since "Embrace the Silence," and I'm sure you've got some new songs written. So when can we expect the new album, what's it gonna be called, what the songs sound like... well, the usual. We are currently recording at the moment for the new album which I hope will be released by the end of the year or sooner.. we had a few set backs but we should be fine ....the new album we be definitely a progression from “Embrace...” this time round there will be more emphasis on power rather than emotion. We didn't really plan it like that... thats just the way it's turning out. The new album will be called "When Truth Lies" thats if we don't change our minds again. Hehehe...
Never been to NZ so we don't really know what to expect but we have heard nothing but great and amazing things about the fans and places there. So we are just so excited to be coming! Then, what can New Zealand expect from Vanishing Point? What you can expect from us is an all out show from us we wanna just blow you all away! You know we love crowd involvement so plenty of raise your fist's in the air and chanting!! Give us a little message for the fans please. Well to the fans that have been waiting thank you so much for supporting us and we are now coming over to really thank you all in person! To the people who don't know who we are or don't know what to expect prepare yourselves for an awesome night of pure metal! We intended on having a great time while we are there so I really hope that you all will to. Thanks heaps, Silvio! Look forward to seeing you in Auckland, guys! Hey thanks! We all cant wait to meet you, have a drink and a good laugh... Cheers! g
You are coming to New Zealand together with DragonForce. Have you

MUSIC REVIEWS CHAOSFEAR One Step Behind Anger Corrosive Musik 2006, CD Very strong stuff. Powerful, driving, brutal, yet not so over the top to be inaccessible to most fans of metal, this is Brazilian thrash at its best. Chaosfear have released a debut here that means business! Taking the best elements of old-school thrash and combining them with some of today's best extreme metal sounds, “One Step Behind Anger” is an unrelenting beast of a record that demands a banging head from the first track. Not sure if this album is available here in NZ stores, but check out www.myspace.com/chaosfear for a sample to decide if it's the kind of thing you'd like to track down.

DAATH The Hinderers Roadrunner 2006, CD Flawless melodic extreme metal here with plenty of cool guitar parts and loads of interesting ideas that hold the listener's attention. Daath have certainly burst onto the scene from out of nowhere with a debut which reaches heights that would take many bands 2 or 3 albums to reach. The performances, mixing and overall polish of the record is impressive. It is yet another of the modern metal releases that you would find difficult to categorize, as there are obviously so many different influences at work here. One of the more enjoyable releaees from the 2006 Roadrunner catalog, worth checking out!

INTERNECINE EXCORIATION Prognosticate the Decrepitude Independent 2006, Demo Guttural vocals that come at you like a 100 foot tall demon frog, riffs that pulverize and destroy the senses, and lyrics constructed of a hate-woven tapestry of vocabulary... this is Australian brutality which proves that the pool of talent in the South Pacific for Death Metal is indeed very deep. If you like DM, you'll surely like Internecine Excoriation. This is the type of music that will shock your neighbors, alienate your parents, and make your pet cat run away. It'll also kill your budgie.

MANOWAR Gods of War Magic Circle 2007, CD Firstly, don't get your hopes up when you see that there are 16 tracks on Gods of War. If you own the Sons of Odin EP, you will only get 6 new metal songs; the rest is previously released, or instrumental / narration work. For those into that 'epic' type of thing, you're in for a treat; to others, you'll find it really breaks the flow of the music. All in all, as a Manowar fan I expected a little more, but I must admit that even 6 new metal songs is a lot for Manowar, for whom it is typical to release albums with around 7-8 tracks period. And the music is all supreme; in fact this album is a MUST OWN, even more so if you don't have the Sons of Odin EP. As always, even considering the excessive narration and instrumental work, this album deserves 10/10. It's quality Manowar which once again proves why they are the Kings of Metal!

MUSIC REVIEWS MICHAEL KISKE Kiske Frontiers 2006, CD According to Michael himself, the new solo record of the ex-Helloween vocalist is a very personal statement. However, I would like to avoid the “personal” side of things here and concentrate on the actual music. The songs are slow and melancholic, and based on acoustic guitar, with violin, piano and trombone bits here and there. It's not a secret that Kiske has tried to get rid of his “ex-Helloween” reputation for a while now, but the problem is that the new songs just don't do justice to his outstanding vocal abilities! Michael undoubtedly is one of the most unique and charismatic vocalists out there, and it's a shame that he doesn't want to do what he's really best at – Heavy Metal. This album could be interesting to the die-hard Helloween fans like myself, but I don't think that an average metalhead would find anything to his/her liking here. Which at the end of the day is really sad.

ROTTING CHRIST Theogonia Season of Mist 2007, CD Studio album 10 from the legendary Greek BM band. One of the best things about Rotting Christ is that they don't limit themselves by any artificial restrictions. All in all it's very smart, well-produced Metal with harmonies and melodies, chorals and keyboards - although not overloaded with it. I gotta admit, it reminds a lot of later Naglfar and Behemoth, but with a unique Greek approach. Great stuff if you want something intense but non-boring. Go check out the new Rotting Christ if you like this sort of stuff!

FURZE Utd Candlelight 2007, CD It doesn't really get any more “true” than this. Norwegian band Furze, consisting solely of morbidlooking individual The Ripper brings back the good old True Norwegian Black Metal. Primitive, ultra fast Black, no low end, and featuring Satyricon's Frost on drums. With a wall of noise, drilling guitars and some grim breakdowns, it actually hurts to listen – something that not too many bands can achieve these days! If you like early Burzum, Mayhem and Darkthrone, this one is for you. Altogether it sounds like it was recorded in 1992, which I suppose was intentional. Even though the band is a newcomer, I'm absolutely positive that Furze will very soon become a cult act among the fans of the style.

MELECHESH Emissaries Osmose Productions 2006, CD Although the band was formed over 10 years ago and already have 3 albums out, if you haven't heard about them, I won't be surprised... Melechesh belongs to a small group of Israeli extreme Metal acts – the scene we don't hear too often about. Melechesh mix Death/Black with Arabic scales and Middle Eastern melodies and themes. That of course has been done by Nile and Orphaned Land, but the in case of Melechesh, the influences are far greater and run throughout the entire album, skillfully entwined into the songs. Altogether “Emissaries” is certainly one of a kind record and is guaranteed to hit the spot with people looking for original extreme Metal. Great stuff.

ridicule the competition but impress people at the same time. We got 3rd place in the Wellington final, so they must’ve liked us! Transforming into a band was easy because it’s ultimately what we wanted. I think we saw the instrumental stuff as more of a short-term project. It was convenient at the time because we didn’t have a singer! With an EP release in 2005 and 2006, will there be another in 2007? Or better yet, an album?
Hailing from the Kapiti Coast, Magnum Opus are a well established force in New Zealand Metal. They have released 2 excellent Eps, and are on the road right now with their first tour of the country. So we took this opportunity to talk with the band's guitarist, Kieran.
Tell us a little about Magnum Opus for anyone who may not have heard of the band before now. Started in 2003, first as an instrumental duo then later got a female vocalist, but now we have male vocals. We’ve had some quite different phases! If you’re into guitar harmonies and a bit of melodic creativity in the riffs and vocals then it’s quite possible you’ll like our stuff. We’re from the Kapiti Coast, and proud of it… the Wellington “scene” is mostly crap as far as I’m concerned! How did the transition from an instrumental duet through to a full band come about? Our guitar teacher suggested we enter a “guitar-only” band into the Rockquest, something that would kinda
Yes! The plan is to start the album late this year once we’re done with gigging for the year. So it’ll be finished at end of this year or beginning of 2008. Meanwhile we might release another EP so people can hear the new songs but getting that out is of less importance than doing the album and touring. Regarding writing, the entire band appears to be quite involved, and is credited for their own work. How is this collaborative method of songwriting working for the band? Whatever sounds good to us, we’ll use. If it was written together then that’s cool, but if it was written by just 1 member, that’s also cool. There’s no actual method that we stick to. We used to be more structured and collaborative with writing but over the last year the new songs have pretty much been individual works. I’d like to experiment with writing more pieces together as a band. What was it like having female members in your band? And what (if anything) has changed now that the band is all blokes? There used to be better scenery on stage! There are people who’ve told me they miss that quite a bit. But the good thing about having only guys in the band now is that we work harder and better together cos we’re all on the same wavelength. It’s not easy to find a girl with the same
13
mentality. We’re also a bit heavier now and can be safe there’ll be no more sexual relationships between members… at least there shouldn’t be! You share the first part of your band name with dinosaur rockers Magnum, as well as with the gun (44 Magnum), and the mustached 80's icon, Magnum P.I. If you had to pick, which of these 3 would your band the most like to be associated with, and why? Say what? haha…I guess Magnum P.I., because it’d be quite cool if everyone in Magnum Opus had a mustache like him! Here's a more typical question... What are your musical influences? We all love the classic metal bands, but we get pretty specific when it comes to modern metal, of which we tend to like mostly underground stuff. As for main influences, Reuben’s a big Opeth fan, Tim loves Thin Lizzy, and Izzy has an Iron Maiden museum in his house. My personal favourite band right now would be DragonForce. Yes they’re cheesy as fuck, as people keep saying, but to me it’s just good-time music. It puts a smile on your face. What would be a lesson you have learnt from recording your band that you could pass on to any bands who may be planning to record their own EP soon? Just do it! Too many bands procrastinate and never even get it done. Also, be open-minded to suggestions from people who’ve done it before, and learn from your own experiences. What has been the hardest time for the band so far? And in contrast, what has been the most rewarding and inspirational thing that has happened? For me, it was when Rowan our original bass player left cos he was a founding member of the band and we’ve been mates since kindergarten! Still great mates today,
14
but there was a lot of uneasiness when that shit went down. Rowan is just starting another band, so look out for him! The most rewarding thing for Magnum Opus, so far, was getting the band on track after the split. We learnt a lot when that happened. And finally, let's talk about the tour!!! What can the audience expect from a Magnum Opus show? Good metal and plenty of good times! Each show has a good line up of bands so you won’t be disappointed. We’re trying to play every town that we can in the country, starting at the end of March with the lower half of the North Island followed by the upper half and then, during the winter, the South Island. Thanks for the interview. Is there anything else you'd like to add? Thank you, it’s an honour! Cheers for supporting metal in this country. People can do the same by going to gigs to hear new bands and by reading Slaughterama! Check out magnumopus.co.nz to hear Magnum Opus and see info about our upcoming tour.

MOVIE REVIEW people. When he meets a group of teenagers spending their vacation in a wood hut, he decides to investigate... Review by Brendon Williams This gem of a horror film contains one of the most hilarious characters I've ever seen in a movie. An intensely two dimensional, comicbook-cheesy homicidal police officer, complete with maniacal laugh, and 666 written in pen on his hand to make him even more evil! This is the type of flick you definitely want to watch on the piss with your mates round. No plot, no acting talent (in fact, the acting is so bad, you begin to wonder if they're doing it on purpose!), a large array of bad oneliners that rival the best Schwarzenneger films... this movie has it all!

Although “Psycho Cop” could be seen as a cheap rip-off of “Maniac Cop” it should be noted that both films were released in 1988, which makes them a veritable tie for the mantle for originator of the police slasher genre. And while “Maniac Cop” follows a far more serious storyline, the entertainment value of each of these films is near equal in its own separate ways. All up, “Psycho Cop” is a movie that anyone who enjoys quality Hollywood fare will be disgusted and bored to tears by. But for the easily amused and intellectually deficient, this film is sure to hit its mark. Perhaps the funniest thing about it is the fact that somehow they managed to make a sequel!g RATING:

Were the references to the intentional, or did it just happen?
"old"
sound
Old Black Metal is a part of our influences, I like old Norwegian BM. we don’t play innovative BM but we try to do something personal. I think the next one will sound different. Many (if not to say the "majority" of) Black Metal bands have a strong message in the music. What's the message behind EM? Slaughterama is pleased to present a short interview with French Black Metal maniacs Eternal Majesty. Enjoy
First of all, for those who are not familiar with Eternal Majesty, tell us what is the band all about. Eternal Majesty was born in 1995, after a demo tape in 1997 and some splits with bands like Antaeus, Krieg, Judas Iscariot, Temple of Baal we recorded our first album “From War to Darkness” (Battlesk’rs), the MCD “Night Shadows” and the 2nd album “Wounds of Hatred and Slavery” under the Appease Me / Candlelight banner. The new album "Wounds of Hatred and Slavery" is out now on Candlelight Records. Are you happy with the record? Yes we are; sound quality, general atmosphere and composition are really better than “From War to Darkness” . But I think we can do better!!
EM speaks about pain, suffering, hatred and slavery. All these things are linked for me. We are not a Satanist band. Personally I consider myself Luciferian; my vision is a personal vision. I consider Satanism more like the basic instincts of human nature and not a religion. You employ a traditional Black Metal image, such as corpse paint, spikes, inverted crosses, etc. How important do you think these attributes are for a band, and what do you think about bands who play similar music, but don't use this image? Corpse paint, for example, creates a cold atmosphere and dehumanizes; it express something deep in me and I like this. But the image of a band is not necessary important. Most important is your sincerity. Where would you like to see EM in 5 years? Or 10 years? I think it’s more important to focus on the present.
What do you think is the best setting to listen to Eternal Majesty?
And what are your plans for the nearest future? I'm guessing, promote the album, do concerts?
For me BM is a personal experience. I prefer to listen to my music alone.
No, we are working on the next album.
What are the band's influences? And what are your favorite bands?
Our traditional question: when you hear about New Zealand, what's the first thing that comes to mind?
Carpathian Forest, Gorgoroth, Emperor, Immortal, Behemoth… a lot of old BM bands; my brothers listen to different things, heavy metal, electro dark music …
Hmm!! Your magnificent landscapes.
Listening to "Wounds..." I hear a fair bit of oldschool Black, like Bathory, Enslaved, old Naglfar.
Thanks a lot for the support !!!g
