As the zine expands and reaches more people, these new readers inquire as to how they can get their hands on earlier issues. Unfortunately, as each issue is a limited run, printed out copies are hard to come by, even for us. However, all past issues are available for free download from www.esnips.com/web/slaughteramazine. And be sure to surf via our official myspace area, www.myspace.com/slaughteramazine. This is the place you will find news on the zine first. We are currently looking for people who are passionate artists and who like drawing gory stuff, especially in the form of horror comic strips, and horror characters, for publication in the zine. If that sounds like you or someone you know, and that person is happy to do some drawings in return for publishing credits (unfortunately we cannot offer cash!), please contact us at [email protected]. NEWS IN ASSOCIATION WITH:

(news current at time of printing) DEICIDE are playing 2 shows in New Zealand as part of their Australasian tour, on December 15 2006 at The Studio in Auckland, and on December 16 at The Civic in Wellington. SUFFOCATION are playing a show in New Zealand as part of their Australasian tour on February 17 2007 at The Studio in Auckland. Richmond Coliseum general manager Dolly Vogt told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that a KISS/DEF LEPPARD tour is being explored for early 2007. There has been no official word as to whether this trek will see the light of day. During SLAYER's "Unholy Alliance" tour stop in Finland, their drummer Dave Lombardo took part in a recording session with APOCALYPTICA. ARMORED SAINT/exANTHRAX singer John Bush is currently doing voiceovers on Burger King TV commercials in the US. A new book on Glam, "American Hair Metal", is described as an "extravagantly visual tribute to the spandex, rouge and eyeliner days of '80s glam rock glory."

Alice Cooper has just sold his memoirs to Random House's Crown Books imprint for an estimated $500,000. The book, "Alice Cooper, Golf Monster: My 12 Steps to Becoming a Golf Addict", is billed as a candid look at his 35-year career, his drinking and his recovery, which was helped along by a new addiction to golf. Despite GUNS N ROSES frontman Axl Rose's insistence that the band's long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy", will surface before the end of 2006, a Universal Music Canada spokesperson told Jane Stevenson of the Toronto Sun this week that "We have no indication that a GUNS N' ROSES record will be released this year." METALLICA's "Master of Puppets", AC/DC's "Back in Black", BLACK SABBATH's "Paranoid", LED ZEPPELIN's "IV" and NIRVANA's "Nevermind" are among the "all-time 100 albums," according to the editors of Time magazine. REVEREND's upcoming CD will include the last lyrics penned by late REVEREND/METAL CHURCH singer David Wayne, titled "With This Needle I Thee Wed".

DECREPIT BIRTH's Mike Turner has been arrested. Investigators said Turner recorded himself on video inappropriately touching at least two children and sexually touching an unconscious adult. He is no longer part of the band as a result of these revelations. g

No, me and Steve still do all the writing. It's always been me and Steve. But with Jack and Ralph we now have much better leads than on previous albums. There must be bands the world over that have a very strong Deicide influence in their sound. Is it flattering to you or does that annoy you? Like him or not, Glen Benton is one of the most famous (and controversial) characters in Death Metal. His band Deicide will always stand among the most legendary names in the genre, and his antics always create heat, be it from religious groups, past band members, or anything else that moves him to action. With people who have been close to the man himself (such as the Hoffman brothers) calling Benton's anti-Christian acts a “show,” we were interested in talking to Glen ourselves to see what sort of person the man behind the music is. And, before New Zealand tour dates were put together, we had the chance to do just that.

Hi Glen! How's things with you? You've got the new album out, “Stench of Redemption”... Yeah I do... (laughs) It's the best record we've done in years, I'm very happy with it. You've got new members in Deicide; guitarists Jack Owen [ex-Cannibal Corpse] and Ralph Santolla. How are they working out for you? They're great, man! elements into the band.

They

bring

Nah, man, it's flattering. I've been doing it for a long time, so something must come out of it, you know. It's flattering to all of us. Deicide has been going for a long time. How do you think Death Metal changed in last 10 – 15 years? I don't know, man, I can't really explain that. But as far as what we're doing, we constantly strive to update ourselves. And I think the new record, it's “Deicide 2000,” you know what I mean? It's definitely a lot more updated. Do you still keep the track of the Death Metal scene? Still listen to it? I'm 39 years old, man. I have hard enough time keeping the track of my kids and my family and my everyday life... The band originated in Florida... I'm from New York. Yeah, we all met here in Florida, but Steve's from New Jersey; I'm from New York.

new

Would you say that Cannibal Corpse elements are coming into Deicide's music? Not at all. Jack is able to do a lot more in Deicide than he used to be able to do with Cannibal. He's able to display his guitar playing talent a lot more. So has the song writing scheme changed now with the arrival of the new members?

04

Glen Benton live

So did you all shift down to Florida when you started? Nah, man. We were kids and you know how it happens, we all were kidnapped by our parents and brought here. Back in those days there were a lot of bands coming out from here like Savatage, Nasty Savage, stuff like that, and then Death Metal came about and everyone fell into it. With Florida being such a sun-shining place, why do you think it produces so many Death Metal bands?

needed a singer, Tony asked me if I'd make a guest appearance on one of the songs and then it turned out to become a whole record. And right now we're negotiating with the record company to do the next album. They'll probably start recording soon. That doesn't interfere with your plans with Deicide? Nah, man, 'cause all I recall have to do is show up and lend my voice. I don't have to do any writing or anything. Now, is there any bad blood between you and the Hoffman brothers? You still talking?

I really don't know, man. There's a big music scene here and it's really easy to get a lot of exposure here real quick showcasing your band. Maybe that's the reason. There's always been a lot of Metal bands in Florida. It's a Metal state. It's like California, you know, Los Angeles. Florida is turning into the next California. But then California have always been “sex-drugs-rock'n'roll” and Florida bands are all heavyheavy. Yeah well there's a lot of angry people here in Florida, man! (laughs) It gets really hot here. What are they all angry about? The heat?

“There's a lot of angry people here in Florida”

Yeah, the heat.... Florida is a weird place, man! You get a lot of traffic jams there? I live out in the swamps, man! So I don't see much traffic jams around here! (laughs) I see alligators in my lake behind my house – that's about it. Ok, back to the music. You also recorded with Vital Remains in 2003 on the “Dechristianize” album. How did that come about and are you planning to work with them again? Me and Tony been friends for years. So when they

Steve and I have nothing to do with them. It's a better band without them. It's got to the point where it was just horrible on stage and it was affecting everybody's performance. It was all about the money for them. They quit and left me and Steve high and dry. They tried to destroy the band before they left with canceling the tours and all the other bullshit they did. And then when the publishing deal changed they only got paid for the songs they wrote. And they wanted to be paid for the songs they didn't write. It was all about the money for those two. When they left they said all sort of negative shit about us. They later called Steve and begged to get back in the band, but that's never gonna happen, man! They burned the bridges, man!

05

Well, it's great to see Deicide with such a strong line-up again! Listen man... With the Hoffman brothers we used to do 35-40 minute sets. Now with Ralph and Jack we're going for an hour and thirty minutes. It's a better show, better guitar playing and a lot more energy on stage. Glen, here's a question: if music is a tool of communication between the musician and the audience, what message does Deicide bring?

Here's an example: about five minutes before you called my house my doorbell rang. And I opened the door and there were two women standing there with briefcases. And I go: “Jehovah's Witnesses?” and they go: “Yeeeeeeees”. And I slammed the door in their face. But you know what? They'll be back. They're like cockroaches, man. Glen, how did you come to burn an inverted cross into your forehead? What made you do it? When I was younger, I used this special effects makeup that created an inverted cross scarred into my forehead. And one of those days I said, “You know what? It's fake and I really, sincerely am who I am and believe in what I believe.” And one morning I woke up and I burned it into my forehead.

Aggression. Violence. Letting your aggression out and then just enjoying it. Enjoying Metal, the power it brings. You are also known for your outspoken beliefs. You are, of course, still a satanist? Absolutely, man. I'm still the same person and I don't plan on changing.

Did it hurt?

Do you get any problems touring because of that? Well, we get shows canceled once in a while because of the local community churches... But not often. (laughs)

Did you do it again or is it the first imprint?

How did you actually get into it? Oh well, you know... It just happened at an early age. Where I lived it was really catholic and I couldn't stand it. So it was my way of rebelling. Do you practice any satanic rituals? You know, satanism is a philosophy. There's a lot of people who think that satanism is about burning black candles, barbecuing babies n'shit, but it's not like that. That's Hollywood. What do you think about the Church of Satan? Those are Hollywood satanists. To be satanist means to be a complete opposite of a Christian.

06

Like hell.

I did it several times to make it stick. So now it's there for good? Yeah but it only comes out at night! (laughs) In your career, is there anything you always wanted to achieve and yet haven't? Man, being 20 years into this shit – I think it's enough of an achievement. So what's next for Deicide? Well, we're gonna do a lot of touring this year and then go to the studio and hammer the next record out. Thanks a lot for the interview, Glen. Thanks, guys. g

ZOMBIE INVASION ZOMBIE INVASION By Stubbs There was a pleasant chill in the night air as I strolled towards the bottom of Queen Street. The sky was splattered with cloud that was lit by the city's lights. It was perfect weather for Halloween night. As I drew closer to the Britomart a faint mumbling filled the air. I turned the corner and jumped back in fright! A pale bloodied figure loomed out of the darkness mumbling, 'brains……BRAINS!'

Oriental flavor

Nasty fucker. 'Ahhh!' I croaked; 'a zombie!' Within seconds the figure was joined by more, all dripping with blood and stumbling forward like drunken gimps. NO! I thought, not my brains! I need them….NEEEED! I held up my arms to prevent the zombies feasting on my skull.

I waited for their attack…but nothing happened. Peeking under my arm I saw the crowd of zombies had stopped at a pedestrian crossing. How weird, I murmured, that's not normal behavior for zombies. Then I noticed that one had a megaphone and was commanding the legion to look less animated! Even stranger things began to happen; I saw children running and skipping in amongst them! What?!? I thought zombies loved to eat children! Why weren't they attacking them and devouring their flesh?

Out for blood

I inadvertently glanced into a store window. Blood was dripping down my pale face. I was one of them. I remember screaming “WHY?!?” But the answer never came. g

MUSIC REVIEWS SONATA ARCTICA For The Sake Of Revenge Nuclear Blast 2006, DVD/CD

A great live collection of Finland's premier melodic Metal band. They say that to appreciate a band's technical abilities in full, you've got to see them live. “Revenge” is a good example of that. Besides the fact that the DVD/CD is beautifully packaged, it presents Sonata in all its glory. Tony Kakko pulls it off without running out of breath or taking shortcuts to make the performance easier, like many other singers. The rest of the band backs him up without the slightest mistakes. There are sing-alongs, mindblowing solos, backdrops and all the stuff that makes an outstanding live gig. There's only one thing that this concert lacks, and that is pyrotechnics. Add some explosions and fireworks here and it would be up there together with Maiden and Priest gigs. But then, hey, nobody's perfect.

MANOWAR The Sons Of Odin Magic Circle / SPV 2006, EP

QUEENSRYCHE Operation: Mindcrime II Tri Rhyche / Rhino 2006, CD These Seattle prog-metallers have always been unique. The sound, the composition, the performance – they're one of those bands you can't confuse with anyone. And the original “Operation: Mindcrime,” released 18 years ago really was their milestone; the album they'll be remembered for. The second part of this Metal opera won't be the revival album. But it will certainly bring back the magic. It's faster, heavier and less depressing than Queensryche's last few records. It's still different enough to remember that the genius songwriter Chris DeGarmo isn't there anymore, but the guys make up for it with the return of Pamela Moor (the original “Sister Mary”) and guest appearance by Ronnie James Dio. It might take a little while to grow on you, but when it does...

TWISTED SISTER A Twisted Christmas Razor & Tie 2006, CD

The Kings Of Metal are back with an EP that is every bit as awesome as Manowar fans could expect. The new studio tracks presented are just fantastic, epic Heavy Metal songs that are immediate classics. The only problem with this disc is that it leaves you wanting more songs!. There is nothing else to be said except that this EP is a must for any fan of True Metal, just like any other Manowar release.

Dee Snider made the definitive soundtrack to Halloween when he released created Van Helsing's Curse. So I guess it's no surprise that Twisted Sister's last release is the basis for the ultimate Heavy Metal Christmas record; and it works! After all, carols are drummed into our heads every single year, and to have kick ass versions is refreshing. The tracks are based instrumentally around Twisted Sister classics also, so each song is like 2 in 1! I would've liked a full-length of new originals before TS retired, but regardless, this CD is perfect for any Metalhead who is laid back enough to still get into the Christmas spirit! Play it loud, mutha!

MUSIC REVIEWS JESU Silver Hydra Head 2006, EP This band was founded by the mastermind of legendary British band Godflesh, Justin Broadrick, and if you're familiar with his work, Jesu is the next logical step. The opener “Silver” and the third track “Wolves” are extremely slow and crushingly heavy, like an 8-meter wave. The second song is a little faster and the closing track is an instrumental. Altogether it's very much excellent funeral Doom, ala old Anathema and Paradise Lost. By that I mean, distinguished melodies, melancholic sound, delay on the vocals – all that stuff. It reminds in parts of Isis, which is not too surprising, considering Jesu are on Aaron Turner's (Isis guitarist/vocalist) record label. All in all – very nice music, perfectly suited for a warm summer night and long walks in the fog.

PAUL STANLEY Live To Win New Door Records 2006, CD Paul Stanley releases his second ever solo effort, not long after Gene Simmons' “Asshole” record. The good news is that “Live To Win” is a superior album to that crap in every way. Very listenable from the first spin, and modern without losing a retro Hard Rock undercurrent, Mr. Stanley proves that he would still have gone far regardless of if he had ever been part of Kiss. This album is proof of the dedication that Paul has always had towards excellent music, and points the finger of blame in the direction of Gene Simmons for the chain of lack-luster albums that Kiss released in the 80's. A word of warning for “Metal only” fans; don't bother with this album! But if you can appreciate good modern rock (albeit poppy in places), then it doesn't get much better than this!

CRUCIFIED BARBARA Play Me Hard GMR / Black Egg 2006, EP Apparently the Glam/Metal scene still blossoms up there in Sweden. Besides Hardcore Superstar and Babylon Bombs now we've got another kicking addition – the all-girl Crucified Barbara. This is a follow-up EP to the last year's debut album “In Distortion We Trust,” and just like the full-length, it should be a nice treat to the fans of Motorhead-like demolishing rock'n'roll. Here you got lots of distortion, fast riffs and a pretty cool vocalist, Mia Coldheart, who I swear sounds exactly like Lita Ford! The rest of the girls – Ida Evileye (bass), Klara Force (guitar) and Nicki Wicked (drums) – are not any less of musicians and together the ladies are a force to be reckoned with. As Borat would put it – Niiiiiice.

SKID ROW Revolutions Per Minute Steamhammer / SPV 2006, CD This album chugs along quite nicely. On the first spin, I found it to be a pleasant listen; nothing spectacular really jumped out at me for the first couple of tracks, until “Strength” - which is an awesome song; great melodies, nice breakdown, good tempo and beat... and the bar stays raised for the remainder of the album. Skid Row's second studio effort since Sebastian Bach left the group, and although I still think that the band will never be anywhere near as good without him vocals, they're doing as good as they can... which is all you can ask, really.

SEBASTIAN BACH SEBASTIAN BACH It's been a long, long time since Skid Row's debut self titled album came out, and they were at the top of the NZ charts. But songs like 'Youth Gone Wild', '18 and Life' and 'I Remember You' can still be heard on radio stations like The Rock FM (and, more importantly on radio shows like House Of Noizz!) The Slaughterama team have had the privilege to interview the frontman from the band's glory days, Sebastian Bach, twice now. The first time around, the interview was presented as a special show on House Of Noizz, complete with songs from Skid Row and Mr. Bach's back catalog. This time around we present the latest Sebastian Bach interview here, exclusively in Slaughterama.

Vintersorg, Quo Vadis] on bass... He's a total fucking hero, man! When we played in Europe we got so many of his fans coming to the show! And another guy named Johnny Chromatic from Tampa, Florida. He was introduced to me by Ralph Santolla from Iced Earth, he's now playing in Deicide. Which is crazy! I never thought there'd be a connection between Sebastian Bach and Deicide! But now Ralph, the guitar player for Deicide has a song on the new Sebastian Bach record! (laughs) It doesn't sound anything like Deicide though! (laughs) So Roy Z produced and he's famous for making that chunky sound... Yeah, he's got his own band though, called Tribe Of Gypsies, which is definitely not like chug-chugchug... I think Roy is famous for producing albums by frontmen who got kicked out of their bands. (laughs) So that's perfect for me.

Welcome back, Sebastian, good to talk to you again! So what's new, what's happening in your life? I just got off the European Guns N' Roses tour and that was insane! We finished with two nights at Wembley in London, the whole tour was completely sold out, you couldn't get a ticket for it, and I'm just having fun going to U2, but watching it now. (laughs) Are Guns N' Roses playing “Chinese Democracy” material? Yeah, absolutely. There's one song called “IRS”, it's really heavy... I really love the new stuff that they're doing. For me it's even more fun than the old stuff, 'cuz it's like... I wanna hear new shit! I love the old Guns N' Roses, but I've been listening to it for almost 20 years now. It's good to hear new stuff! It was really cool for them to take us on tour. This is by far the biggest thing my solo band has done, opening up for Guns N' Roses. We're doing a lot of new songs, we've got the new CD coming out in January, called “Angel Down” and we recorded it in Hollywood in June with Roy Z producing. I got two guys from the Halford band and Steve DiGiorgio [ex-Autopsy, Control Denied, Death, Testament, Sadus,

Sebastian Bach live

SEBASTIAN BACH So the album is coming out in January? Yeah. I've got a new manager who's got this big plan for putting out this new record. I also got the new record label too, so it's gonna be one worldwide release, not like my other solo record, “Bring 'Em Bach Alive” which came out in different countries at different times. It's gonna be like a one shot motherfucker! Are we gonna see you in New Zealand? Yeah... I guess so. My manager tells me that my new answer to all those questions is “I don't know!” (laughs) So that's your answer from now on dude. We've got amazon.com and all that... Yeah that's the good thing about the Internet, 'cuz you can order it online n' all. As well as everything that I do, so that's great! So you also went to Australia... When was the last time you've been there? Last time it was 1993 with Guns N' Roses, funnily enough. We did three shows with Rose Tattoo opening for Skid Row, opening for Guns N' Roses. It was like a 100,000 people a night so it's like the best memories touring down under. Also New Zealand... I remember playing in Auckland twice – once we headlined and once we opened for Guns N' Roses in Auckland, and I remember bungee jumping. It's like the best memories of the old days; me and Snake [Dave “Snake” Sabo, Skid Row guitarist] jumping off the bridge with a bungee cord... That was 1990. That was cool dude! I don't do that shit anymore. Why not?

I saw too many videos on TV of that fucking thing breaking or the guys missing this or that, so fuck that! (laughs) How big were the shows you played here? It was the biggest stadium you've got there, so it was some 40 – 50,000 people there. So I'd definitely count that as successful and the show we headlined... oh fuck... I can't remember the name of that place. But there were at least a few thousand people there. It was in 1990. Maybe you should go that extra step and come to New Zealand. We'll show you good times! I'm surprised I'm not coming down there right now dude! I'd come down right now, fuck! Call somebody or something! (laughs) I don't know dude. My manager says, “I don't know!” Some big names came up during this interview, like Iced Earth and Deicide... What music are you listening to these days, Sebastian? I listening to a lot of stuff on my Ipod, you know... With Ipod it's just limitless what I listen to! But I don't always listen to Heavy Metal either. I listen to different kinds of music for different reasons. I listen to a lot of stuff because of the singing, like Journey, or Judas Priest because of Rob Halford's voice. Because it's like a fucking machine! I like Hatebreed. “Rise Of Brutality” is the best Heavy Metal album I've heard in a long time! OK, let's talk about television, because you're on TV quite a lot lately. Tell us about “Gilmore Girls.” How did that come about?

13

SEBASTIAN BACH It came out of my Broadway stuff and also the stuff I did on VH1... That's actually where it really come from – VH1. I was on the show called “I Love the 70s,” I don't know if you get it there in New Zealand. And the casting agent of “Gilmore Girls” was looking for a cool rock star and they said, “That's the guy we want.” So they got a hold of my agent and I'd like never even seen that show! (laughs) But it's cool to create a character and act it out because most of the shows now are like reality shows. I'm actually on “Gilmore Girls” tonight and there's like 5 million people watching that show! It's fucking crazy man! You have it in New Zealand?

Well, we got the picture about Tommy Lee and Supernova. What about Alice Cooper? The originator. Many people copied him for years and years, from Kiss to Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie. I actually think that someone like Marilyn Manson is exactly like Alice Cooper. Even the name, it's like, holy fuck dude! Twisted Sister? One of my favorite bands of all time! My favorite album is “You Can't Stop Rock N' Roll.” I love that band!

Yeah we saw it just a few months back... It was like “Fuck, turn the TV on, man, it's Sebastian Bach!”

Manowar? Eric Adams is one of the greatest singers in Heavy Metal history. Nobody gets to scream like that. And they look great in loin cloths! (laughs)

(laughs) That's funny! Do you guys get “Supergroup” down there? Hmm.. no we don't... [Actually, we do. The show premiered on Thursday, 16 November on Prime at 9:30 PM, but at the time of the interview we had no idea about it] Yeah, that's me and Ted Nugent, and Scott Ian from Anthrax, and Evan [Seinfeld] from Biohazard, and Jason Bonham [son of John Bonham from Led Zeppelin; you could see him in the movie “Rock Star”]. So we're all in there [Las Vegas] for 14 days, recording some songs and then we did some shows. Hopefully you'll see it down there in New Zealand as well. That's a crazy fucking show. What do you think about “Rockstar Supernova”? I only watched it once and that was enough for me, 'cuz I sort of had enough of the reality shows with the word “Super” in it. Fucking Supernova, superboy, supergirl, I had enough of it right now. You wanna play a little game with us? We give you a name and you say the first thing that comes into your head. Ok!

14

Judas Priest? Oh... I mean... it's the ultimate Heavy Metal band with the ultimate rock n' roll singer. I won't even say that Rob Halford is the best Heavy Metal singer of all time, I think he's the best singer of all time! I never heard a voice do what Rob Halford can do. It's like, holy fuck, man! Can that guy fucking scream or what?! Well, so what's next for Sebastian Bach? We're looking at some tour dates to happen over the next couple of months. We're looking forward to putting the new record out in the new year and touring 'til we fucking can't even stand up! (laughs) Seems like you lead a pretty active lifestyle. Yeah. I'm in a position where I do what I wanna do and that's pretty fucking cool! Forever wild? Yeah, right on, dude!g

MOVIE REVIEW The idea of a Santa slasher flick was awesome, although not original, as the killer Santa idea had already been done, but nowhere near as well as this. And, lucky me, this film was made in the 80's while I was growing up, which made it all the more desirable to watch. I try to get round to viewing this movie every year as part of my own Christmas tradition (just like watching Halloween movies on Halloween, and Friday the 13th movies on Friday the 13th). As you'd probably guess, the film is really cheesy, and follows a rather unbelievable storyline, but all of that adds to the enjoyment. Seeing the demented Santa (Billy) go on his killing spree is great entertainment. This movie has 4 shoddy sequels; part 2 is pretty much just a rehash of the first movie, full of 'flashbacks' which are cuts from the first film. Haha! Way to make easy money there. It's pretty easy to see why SNDN was so controversial in its time. It really pushed the boundaries of what ideas were socially acceptable to dramatize at the time, and for that reason will remain a piece of movie history. The movie itself is rather timid compared to some horror movies around these days, but the bans it received give it a reputation that precedes it.

Atrocity is one of the oldest German Death Metal bands. Well, to tell the truth, the band's sound has changed drastically over the years, but the first two albums definitely contained some of the most innovative, technical and somewhat twisted Death. The further discography presented an amazing variety of sounds from a collaboration with the German new wave duo Das Ich, to an album of 80's pop covers, “Werk 80,” which simply has to be heard. We talked with Atrocity's guitarist and the founding member Matthias Roderer, who definitely had some interesting stories to tell!

Let's start with the new album... Yes, we are currently working on the new record, “Werk 80 II.” It's the follow up to our 1997 album, “Werk 80.” That was a very cool album of the '80s covers! So what's gonna be in the second part?

years also became vegetarian. It's not a rule of course, it just happens. Atrocity has been going for quite some time and the band has changed a lot from the first albums... Yes of course. We've been playing music for over 20 years and if you change the line-up it's clear that the music can't stay the same. In 20 years your personality, your influences and music that you like change a lot. And so does the music, of course. Do you remember how Atrocity started? We started as a school band. Alex [Krull; vocalist] and I were Death Metal fans and back in those days there weren't too many. We decided to form the band so we could play the same music we were listening to. So why Death Metal? We were trying to make the most extreme music there was and we wanted to test our limits and see

It's still a secret! We can't tell you before it's released. (laughs) But it will of course be top 10 titles from the 80s. So now tour?

you're

on

Yes, for the last 3 months we were touring Europe and did some shows in Australia and America. Liv [Kristine, Leaves' Eyes] told us that you're all vegetarian and do sports n' all... Yeah, that's right! I'm not that much into sports myself, I'm rather a couch potato! (laughs) I'm the black sheep of the band. I drink, I smoke, but I'm also a vegetarian. It's interesting, because all the new members who came into the band in the last few

Atrocity what we could do. And it really sounded fresh back then, because it's not like today we have 2 million Death Metal bands. We were the first wave of German Death, because before that there only were Thrash Metal bands like Destruction, Kreator, and Sodom. And we wanted to go a step further.

What were your influences when you started? Mostly bands like Carcass and Morbid Angel. Also different stuff like Watchtower and Nasty Savage. Especially if you listen closely to some of our early stuff you can really hear some Nasty Savage in it. You were never afraid to explore new musical grounds. So what made you record stuff like “Werk 80” with all those pop covers? This idea was actually really old. Since we started the band we always felt like those were good pop

a few ideas already. After “Werk 80 II” we want to do a trilogy – a three CD concept album. What about??? I can't tell you! (laughs) We are really a band full of secrets. But we were thinking of what would be next for Atrocity and we would really like to do a trilogy album. It won't just be a concept. We want to have a melody line, a motive, which would go through all three CDs, like an opera or a symphony. So what do you do for fun? Well, besides playing with my kids, I also do the usual stuff, like going out, having a drink. I'm also a big PC gamer. I love “Call Of Duty,” “Return To Castle Wolfenstein,” “Medal Of Honor,” “Rome: Total War” and those sorts of games. I go online and play with other people. What about the other guys?

songs that everybody listened to, but they still missed something, like heavy guitar. For example we always wanted to cover “Shout” [originally by Tears For Fears] and then we thought, if we do this cover, why not make a whole album of cover versions? Nobody did that before and we really felt like it was an original idea. So what do you listen to these days? There's a lot of variety in what I listen to. I still like Death and Black Metal, but I also always liked classical music. That's why when you listen to our last album “Atlantis,” all the dark classical stuff is mostly composed by me. Now, the last album was “Atlantis,” the next one will be an album of cover material... Do you have any new original songs written, or is it too early to think about next record? We don't have any new songs at the moment, but of course I play guitar and I collect my riffs and I've got

Well, we own a studio here in Germany, so we also do production for other bands. I record guitars, the other guys record bass and drums, Alex does the mixing... some kind of job sharing. And our bassist Chris [Christian Lukhaup] is a world-wide expert on crayfish. He's already published two books about it and he's getting hundreds of e-mails from all over the world. What can you write in a book about crayfish? Like how to cook it? I have no idea. (laughs) I don't know anything about this subject. But those books are great. They're really scientific and so different from the things we're doing here. You've given away your secret. We know what the concept is gonna be about! Crayfish! Yeah the three-part concept of evil crayfish! We got enough information here to put three albums together! g
