Iran A Cossack army officer, Reza Khan, became Reza Shah after assuming the thrown in Iran. He did this by staging a coup against the Qajar dynasty. The new Shah was not a very well received leader in the beginning, but things soon began to improve as he spearheaded many advantageous efforts In Iran. The Shah created an environment of modernization in Iran. He built new industry, new roads, railway, and a new national school system. This pleased the people of Iran but not those of allied Europe, as they feared an alliance with communist countries and Iran. The Allies of Europe invaded Iran removing the Shah and replacing him with his son, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. After a short time Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh was elected as Prime Minister. Dr. Mohammed was not well like by the British as they lost their stakes in the oil production of Iran. This led to another coup by the British, only this time it was led by Americans. The C.I.A was called in to begin a coup against the reigning government. The plan was called Operation Ajax and worked very well. After the King and Prime Minister were overthrown, Mohammed Pahlavi was placed back into power. Once Mohammed Pahlavi could safely reign again he began his plans for modernization once more. This created more economic growth and stability. He did enact a new policy in Iran as well; his new policy was to crush all political opposition in Iran. By doing this he could secure his position in Iran and not have to worry about another coup in Iran for at least a little while longer. Mohammed Pahlavi left the country after riots formed over the decay of the economy in Iran. The Ayatollah came to power in the wake of this and began his rule of Iran.
