Good evening parents and students, my name is Mrs. Salzano and I am going to be your 3rd grade teacher. I just want to start off saying that I am not a teacher because it is easy; I am a teacher because I believe in learning. I believe that your education in the key to unlocking your future. I believe that each and every one of you, are capable of learning. Brian Herbert said, “The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” You have the capacity to learn. This year we will develop the skills to learn. We will learn about failing, mistakes and keeping going. You must have the willingness to learn. Everyday you walk through my door I want you to bring your will to learn. Everyday you come here I want you to know that I believe in you. I know that your parents believe in you. I want you to believe in yourself. Albert Einstein said “Everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing it is stupid. I want to find the genius in you. Being a genius does not mean that you need to be a world renowned scientist, it means finding what you are best at. When I look at you I see the next generation of lawyers, doctors, teachers, accountants, engineers, bankers, ballerinas, or anything else you want to be. . Being a genius means knowing who you are. I like the saying “be yourself everyone else is taken.” Each person is an individual. I want everyone to embrace their uniqueness. Being a genius means knowing we all learn differently. There are different ways of learning, visual, audio, and kinesthetic. Using a combination of these styles of learning I hope to engage each child’s learning style. Being a genius means sometimes you will fail. Fear of failure is something you learn, not something you are born with. You learned to walk by falling down, picking yourself back up, and doing it again. You were not afraid. I want to change how you look at failure. Fail is the First Attempt In Learning.” Notice how it is the First not Last attempt. In this classroom we will take the fear out of failing. In this classroom fail will no longer mean “I can’t” or “I give up”. In this classroom everyone CAN! Being a genius means you will make mistakes. Mistakes are the path to improvement. Mistakes help you learn. Mistakes are answers to questions you did not know. Mistakes are an important part of being a genius. Thomas Edison made a light bulb 1000 times before he found the right way. Walt Disney was fired because he “lacked imagination”. J.K. Rowling had 12 publishers reject her. These men and women and many, many more failed, made mistakes, pick themselves up and carried on. You do not need to be famous to be a genius. Being a genius means that you will make mistakes but not give up and you will keep going. I believe in you, and I believe in your future. Let’s make this the best year ever.
