The first alumni newsletter is here! As an effort to stay connected with everyone who has studied at the Institute, we are launching the first bi-annual alumni newsletter. This is just a small snippet of what has been happening here at the Institute and what students have achieved since leaving the program. We will spotlight individual students every issue, feature upcoming events as well as update student work from semester to semester. Tell us what you have been doing since graduating from the program.

The Institute welcomes two students for our Summer 2009 semester! We are pleased to have Zhanina Boyadzhieva and Yasmina Khan this summer. Zhanina is coming to us from Mount Holyoke and will be examining the great pedestrian experiment of Times Square. Yasmina is a student at New York University and she’ll be delving into the issues of the flophouses along the Bowery.

Gwen Arber presented her final project entitled, (UN)identifiable Global Cities: between Ambivalence and Utopia which examined the United Nations complex and site within New York City.

Kevin Kennon travels to the Five Colleges. J A N U A R Y

Gwen began questioning the limitations and possibilities of a socially and politically engaged architecture by looking into the political nature and architectural implications of the United Nations as it stands today. She investigated how to rectify the ideas of global governance with the site and the notions of public media, protest and expression. Focusing on the temporary building, which is currently under construction, Gwen proposed keeping and transforming the temporary building rather than tearing it down and introduced a transitional media center that would travel around the world echoing the message of the United Nations.

Anika Hedberg joins the Institute program as a student advisor. She and Schuyler Cadwalader (F ‘07) assist with design strategies and technical guidance as peer advisors to the students throughout the semester. Schuyler has been involved with the Institute in this role for two semesters now.

She will be heading back to Hampshire College to finish her degree over the course of the next year. Great job Gwen!
