Banking system of a nation is the shadow of nation’s economy. The Indian banking system, is one of the largest banking network in the world. Banking in India originated in the last decades of the 18th century. The first banks were The General Bank of India, which started in 1786.

oldest bank in existence in India is the State Bank of India.

1949, the Banking Regulation Act was enacted which empowered the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) "to regulate, control, and inspect the banks in India.“

1969 government nationalized the 14 largest commercial banks.

conclusion Housing constitutes the biggest segment of 48% of the entire retail credit; followed by the auto loans segment which constitutes almost 27.8%. Public sector banks (PSBs) are more focused on the educational loans segment. The rural market uprising is a recent phenomenon, which has immense growth potential.
