PALPALIIW… EDIBERT L BARENG
Just as I am fond of watching ABS-CBN’s teleserye, “May Bukas Pa”, I know for sure, kabsat you are also glued on television every night that want to be inspired by the drama’s of this nightly soap opera on television. The show, set in a monastery, features a boy who talks to BRO (Jesus), and turns out to be a healer, thus making this group of priest liable on the outcome of his healing sessions. We expect that Santino (Zaijan Jaramilla) on the lead will give due respect, thus making genuine inspiration and devotion in each character he portrays. In certain episodes, have we tried to put ourselves in each character portrayed by the artist? Television shows like “May Bukas Pa”, brings to its viewers the reality that everyone of us, in our daily routines gives true meaning on the characters. My co-employee who regularly watch MBP, told me that she was overwhelmed and cries when the prayers of Santino to BRO has been answered. Santino’s young and innocent mind need not to be questioned because he knows BRO will be at his side always. By the way, are your prayers been answered? Do you see how it works? God is really neat about things like prayer. We just have to be really want it in
our heart of hearts and be sincere and happy with our prayers, and then be silent, still, patient and wait with faith. Trust and affection may come as gift, but are most often earned through patience and an open heart. This is called FAITH. ***** Moving on is like saying goodbye to friends for long period of time you’ve been together. Graduation comes in every student’s life (unless they don’t want to graduate). And not only for student, it applies to all of us. Moving on is something to be a part of very day life experiences. Here, it is appropriate to acknowledge that there are some things you have grown to love and that you’ll miss. Keep in mind, of course, that there are new views over the horizon. Moving on has to be again a view for a more exciting life ahead. This is called Life’s new CHAPTER. ***** SIGNS, just looking around the streets and roads around the poblacion. A lot to be noticed. Have you ever or never noticed our traffic signs. Some has been dilapidated, torn out and even not readable, just because the letterings are so small and even the colors have been
blurred out or erased. No reflectorize stickers. This causes accident sometimes. This is one of the many complaints I’ve heard from drivers who got apprehended due to this poor traffic signs. With due respect to the revised city ordinance – on traffic rules, fines etcetera. It is proper that this traffic sign boards be given a “face lift” for us all commuters and drivers. By the way it is beautiful to look at the Quiaoit River in its on-going rehabilitation. The good Mayor has just put this concern on his year-end report. And it is a fitting time for us all to preserve and maintain the cleanliness of this river. It is interesting to look back, as far as I remember, this river was a haven for good water, laundry venue on weekends, swimming grounds for children and even fishing ground for people in the poblacion. We hope that with the cooperation of concerned barangays within the route of the Quiaoit River will protect its waters from pollution. Still some signs. The recently concluded Batac Farmers Festival 2009, last May 1-7, was a well attended and organized program of the City Government of Batac with the all-out support of the 43 barangays of the city. It is nice to remember and I am happy to be a part of it. Being chosen as an emcee,
together with my partner – Manang Carmelita Tallon. Some says it was an interesting tandem – mother and son, well some do not agree but I can say and we both agree that it was our moment of experiencing what it is to be a center of attraction for an hour with so much nervousness inside and out. Gosh. Congratulations to the organizers. See you next year for another fun filled and educational Farmers Festival. More signs, some says that this is the sign of the worsening global environmental change. Early this year, typhoons entered our country and PAGASA says it was still premature to have typhoons this early. But we do not know what is in store for us, why this early signs has to be experienced by ours. As a result, production of crops has been destroyed and even human lives have become the ransom of its destructions. Thank God that in our locality we are safe. But still we are to be properly prepared for it, for we do not know what and when will
these things happen again. Bassit laeng a panagsagsagana kabsat. ***** ESCAPE was certainly on our minds these past months, just because of the long summer vacation, when we sought relief from the hectic schedules and heat of the sun, as well as the bad news on economy globally and job losses for others. Me? I went to Baguio for a weekend trip with friends from the US. I called it a bonding weekend. In my mind I cannot take away my work I left behind, still my escape for my daily work routine keeps flashing on my mind. My brief enjoyment was only temporary and the reality of our daily situation – job losses, company closes, shrinking markets, continue to shake us even when we are out in our comfort zones. With all these things we experience, there is one thing we need to be in common ground – PRAYER. Just as Santino once says in, “May Bukas Pa”, in his dialogue with Padre Jose, regarding
the no-show of miracle of the Golden Sto. Niño. “Bakit Father, sawa na ba ang mga tao na magdasal?” Still with fervent prayers, we know the Lord will not abandon us. He will guide us in our battle, in our struggles. We will conquer them all. Don’t be afraid, I can meet you halfway. We can’t always know, where the road ends up But with some luck, I know we can go… Don’t be afraid, ‘Cause I’ll meet you halfway You’re not far behind, if we climb the hill I know there’s still a chance we can find Whenever we imagine….
FILL BOX: Hello to Ma’am Veron Garcia and staff. Happy trip to my batch mate, Melvin Tabancay bound for the US. Mg Anabel of Anabel’s Eatery for my favorite kare-kare. Happy Birthday to Kuya Noel Narciso. Happy Birthday to Joemar Ordonia. Email me at:

ON STREET
DANCING In line with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ (NCCA) mandate to “encourage artistic creation within a climate of artistic freedom; develop and promote Filipino National Culture and Arts; and preserve Filipino cultural heritage”, the City Government of Batac entered into a Letter of Agreement with the NCCA, wherein the latter agreed to assist the City of Batac in the conduct of a Choreographers’ Workshop on Street Dancing, particularly the Street Dancing of the EMPANADA FESTIVAL scheduled on 23 June 2009. The workshop was conducted on 24 and 25 May 2009 by the National Commission for Culture and the
Arts (NCCA) through the Speakers and Resource Persons Bureau Program. The NCCA sent MS. GRACE PEREZ and MR. NORDIC CARAIG to facilitate the Choreographers Workshop. CITY Mayor JEFFREY JUBAL C. NALUPTA, the brainchild of the EMPANADA FESTIVAL, delivered his message during the Opening Program. The City Mayor expounded on his objective to have the EMPANADA FESTIVAL accredited and/or recognized as one of the major festivals in the country. The workshop immediately followed after the Opening Program.
ON VICTORY and DEFEAT Celia A. Verano, Master Teacher I, H. Valdez Mem. Elem School There are only two sides of a coin. Same true in every competition; the winning side and losing side. This general truth is reflected in the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa 2009 held at Tacloban City, Province of Leyte, Region 8, on April 27 – May 2, 2009, we shout “hurray!” to the victors and humbly extend our hands to those on the losing end. In any competition, victory and defeat is inevitable. But losing and winning is not all that sports is. It’s a great opportunity to learn values, know the culture of other places, meet and socialize with new found friends.
The popular Charlie Brown of the comic strip Peanuts, a lovable loser himself said, “Winning isn’t everything, but losing isn’t anything.” While winning and the determination to win is important, sports goes deeper than that. Young athletes can learn skills that are far more important than how to win or lose. Losing can be humiliating but one can learn to lose with grace. That is what good sportsmanship is all about: learning to accept one’s loss with poise. If an athlete played fairly, gave his best and loss, there is nothing to be embarrassed about. There is no shame in losing to a
better and more skilled opponent. Much pride in fact might be taken by competing well against such an opponent. On the other hand, if an athlete did not try his best, he might as well be embarrassed, but the humiliation here is not from the loss, but from faking short of what is required of him as an athlete. Winning is important but how one plays the game is far more important. Every athlete knows that winning or losing may not be under his control, but what he can control is how he prepares. Preparing hard and competing to the best he can is considered “winning” itself.
