Worldwide Internet usage The number of people with Internet access has been growing rapidly. At the end of 1997, only 1.7% of the world’s population – 70 million people – had used the Internet. In 2009, the number of users has risen to an estimated 1.9 billion people –which is 26% of world population, according to the latest figures from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). In 2007, more than half (59%) of internet users worldwide lived in 10 countries. China lead the pack with 29% followed by the United States: 23%

By region, Asia and the Pacific region has the highest number of internet users. Africa has the lowest.
