INTRODUCTION

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is concerned with the use of technology managing and processing information. ICT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and retrieve information. Open Source Software (OSS) can be defined as computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form. Application software can be mainly classified under few categories which are Enterprise software, Enterprise infrastructure software, Information worker software, Media and entertainment software, Educational software, Media development software, and Product engineering software.

Examples of Open Source OS

There are two examples of Open Source Operating System which are Haiku and Syllable. Haiku is an open-source operating system currently in development designed from the ground up for desktop computing. Inspired by the BeOS, Haiku aims to provide users of all levels with a personal computing experience that is simple yet powerful, and free of any unnecessary complexities. Haiku is developed mostly by volunteers around the world in their spare time. Besides, Syllable is a reliable and easy-to-use open source operating system for the home and small office user. Syllable is still being developed, but it is already relatively stable and mature, including the following features: a) booting usually takes less than 10seconds, a full GUI is built into the OS b) support for a wide range of common hardware devices, including video,

network, and sound cards from manufacturers such as Intel, AMD, 3Com, nVidia, and Creative c) Internet access through an Ethernet network (PPP and PPPoE are not

fully supported yet, but are available in a test version) d) a graphical web browser, based on WebKit e) an e-mail client (Whisper), and hundreds of other native applications

f) a journalled file system, modelled on the BeOS file system

SOFTWARE 3.1 Meaning of open source application software 3.2 Example of open source application software Notepad++ v5 Official Release These are main features added in v5 is the performance of Notepad++ v5 is improved especially on exit. Function parameters calltip hint : in a modern IDE, it always comes together with auto-completion. In this version of Notepad++ calltip feature is implemented as extension of auto-completion. A lot of other new features are added in v5 for example bookmarked lines cut/copy/paste/delete operations, more items (caret, tab bar) are configurable, and rename/ Notepad++ v5 fixed bugs and added features 1. Improve Notepad++ performance - on startup and on exit. 2. Add Calltip capacity. 3. Add HTML/XML tag match highlighting. 4. All the menu commands can be added in context menu, including plugins' commands, macros and user defined commands. 5. Add bookmarked lines operations : delete all marked lines, copy all marked lines into clipboard, cut all marked lines into clipboard, paste from clipboard to replace all marked lines content. 6. Add rename and delete current document features. 7. Fix crash bug : Open files with date pre-1970. 8. Fix clone mode bug : now the actions done in one view will be synchronized in the cloned view. 9. Add tooltips in document tab to display the full file name path. 10. Change hide lines behaviour : Hide lines now saved during switches. 11. Change file history list behaviour : Most recent closed file is on the top. Add number on list. 12. Caret width and blink rate are customizable.

13. Add asterisk in title bar if file is dirty. 14. The bookmarks' look & feel are improved. 15. Add "Select all" and "copy" context menu items in Find in files results window. 16. Fix goto line with command line bug. 17. Improve smart highlight / mark all / incremental search highlight all visibility 18. Tabbar's colours is configurable via Stylers Configurator(Active tab Text, Inactive tab text, Inactive tab background, Active tab focused indicator and Active tab unfocused indicator). 19. Add the smart highlight file size limit - 1.5 MB in order to improve the performance. 20. Add exception handling (dumping filedata). 21. Fix go to line command line bug. 22. Enhance Find in files and Find in all opened files features' performance. 23. Fix dialog off screen problem under multi-monitor environment. 24. Add 2 plugin message for v5 : NPPM_GETFULLPATHFROMBUFFERID and NPPM_GETPOSFROMBUFFERID.

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning of Pervasive Computing Pervasive computing is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous (another name for the movement is ubiquitous computing), connected computing devices in the environment, a trend being brought about by a convergence of advanced electronic - and particularly, wireless - technologies and the Internet. Pervasive computing devices are not personal computers as we tend to think of them, but very tiny - even invisible - devices, either mobile or embedded in almost any type of object imaginable, including cars, tools, appliances, clothing and various consumer goods - all communicating through increasingly interconnected networks.

5.2 Example of Pervasive Computing 5.2.1 Mobile Computing - Wearable computer Some inventors and other theorists not only believe you could wear a computer; they believe there's no reason why you shouldn't. Assuming you remembered to wear it, a wearable computer is always available. Currently, several companies sell wearables and there is a considerable literature on the subject. Some wearable computers are basically desktop or notebook computers that have been scaled down for body-wear. Others employ brand new technology. Both general and special purposes are envisioned. A number of wearables have been designed for the disabled. Among the challenges of wearable computers are: how to minimize their weight and bulkiness, how and where to locate the display, and what kind of data entry device to provide. Some of the applications envisioned for wearable computers include: •

Augmented memory, a concept originated by Thad Starner and being developed by Bradley Rhodes at the MIT Media Lab, in which as you enter a room, your wearable

computer could sense the people present and remind you of their names or personal history, or a scheduler could whisper the time of an important meeting in your ear, or a "remembrance agent" could look for related documents by observing the words you were typing . •

5.2.2 Smart home or building A smart home or building is a home or building, usually a new one, that is equipped with special structured wiring to enable occupants to remotely control or program an array of automated home electronic devices by entering a single command. For example, a homeowner on vacation can use a Touchtone phone to arm a home security system, control temperature gauges, switch appliances on or off, control lighting, program a home theater or entertainment system, and perform many other tasks. The field of home automation is expanding rapidly as electronic technologies converge. The home network encompasses communications, entertainment, security, convenience, and information systems. A technology known as Powerline Carrier Systems (PCS) is used to send coded signals along a home's existing electric wiring to programmable switches, or outlets. These signals convey commands that correspond to "addresses" or locations of specific devices, and that control how and when those devices operate. A PCS transmitter, for instance, can send a signal along a home's wiring, and a receiver plugged into any electric outlet in the home could receive that signal and operate the appliance to which it is attached.

One common protocol for PCS is known as X10, a signaling technique for remotely controlling any device plugged into an electrical power line. X10 signals, which involve short radio frequency (RF) bursts that represent digital information, enable communication between transmitters and receivers. In Europe, technology to equip homes with smart devices centers on development of the European Installation Bus, or Instabus. This embedded control protocol for digital communication between smart devices consists of a two-wire bus line that is installed along with normal electrical wiring. The Instabus line links all appliances to a decentralized communication system and functions like a telephone line over which appliances can be controlled. The European Installation Bus Association is part of Konnex, an association that aims to standardize home and building networks in Europe. Echelon Corp., the creator of the LonWorks system, is helping drive adoption of an open interoperability standard among vendors in the control networks industry. LonWorks is an open standard for network automation and control for the building, transportation, industrial and home markets. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has adopted the protocol underlying LonWorks control networks as an industry standard. The LonMark Interoperability Association is made up of more than 200 controls companies mission working on standard to integrate multi-vendor systems based on LonWorks networks.

Network is group of two computer.It is to connect two or more computers with the ability to communicate with each other and share resources.Types of network is LAN,MAN,WAN. LAN -Local Area Network -local area network are sometimes called a single location network. -network that is limited to a relatively small spatial area such as a room,a single building,a ship,or an airraft. MAN -Metropolitan Area Network -The network that connects two or more LANs together but does not extend beyond the boundaries of the immediate town or city. -Typically covers an area of between 5 to 50km range. WAN -Wide Area Network -WAN is a data communications network that covers a relatively broad geographic area and that often uses transmission facilities provided by common carries,such as telephone companies.
