Move to Cup Paying Off for A.J. Allmendinger A.J. Allmendinger is hardly alone. Every driver who migrated into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from IndyCar, ChampCar and/or Formula One has faced difficulties, oft times unanticipated, in moving to stock cars. The one great success story so far is Juan Pablo Montoya, who made the Chase in his third try. But Allmendinger, 27, is getting better, and in marked contrast to many others, also is still around. The driver of the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 44 Dodge, Allmendinger, from Los Gatos, Calif., finished seventh in the recent AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. It was his

fifth top-10 finish of the year, and it moved him up two spots to 24th place in the Sprint Cup point standings. Prior to this season, Allmendinger had only two top-10 finishes in 66 tries. “I come to the track every weekend trying to be as competitive as I can and win races,” he said earlier this year. “It doesn’t matter if you’re third or 33rd in points, you have the same objective every weekend, and that’s to win. “I think the motivation comes from the effort that is put in every week by Richard Petty Motorsports and the people that build the cars for me. I really feel that I’m getting in really good race cars that are fast and competitive. It takes a lot of hard work and sweat to get ready for these races, and you don’t want to let anybody down. You’re motivated to win for yourself, your sponsors, your team. ... There’s plenty of reason to get motivated every week.” Allmendinger took great pride in his Dover finish. Oddly, he qualified seventh for the season’s first race at the Monster Mile and finished seventh in the second. “Hopefully,” he said, “we can run strong like this in the final eight races to show everyone what kind of team that we have. It was a smooth day. ... I’m just proud of everybody.”

Moving from stardom in one major series to mediocrity in another can be tough. “I’m not immune from losing confidence, but I certainly think the equipment that Richard Petty Motorsports puts me in allows me to stay positive every week,” he said. “I don’t think that you can compete at this level of motorsports without having confidence in your ability as a race-car driver. “This is a competitive sport. There are very talented teams and drivers in NASCAR all shooting for the same thing: to win. ... If you don’t have confidence out

NATIONAL CLINICAL STUDY LOOKING FOR LOCAL WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER Bradford, Pa.- Breast cancer spreads to the bone in at least one-fourth of all breast cancer patients, and the average life expectancy after a diagnosis of bone metastasis is two years. At the same time, breast cancer treatments are commonly associated with osteoporosis, bone fractures, and pain. Because of this, eligible breast cancer patients now have the opportunity to participate in a national clinical trial through the Cancer Care Center at the Bradford (PA) Regional Medical Center (BRMC), a network affiliate of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in Buffalo, NY. The study is designed to help researchers determine whether drugs called bisphosphonates can prevent breast cancer from spreading to the bone and also protect against bone problems associated with standard treatments for breast cancer.

Participants in this Phase III study at the BRMC Cancer Care Center, sponsored by the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and under way at institutions across the country, will receive bisphosphonates, drugs commonly used to treat osteoporosis, or bone loss. Over the course of 10 weeks, participants will also undergo medical testing to gauge the effects of the bisphosphonates, providing researchers with information critical to the improvement of breast cancer treatments.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States, didn’t learn to read until he was 17 years old. • For reasons that are unclear in

the present day, lawmakers in North Carolina once saw fit to forbid racing a rabbit down a public street. • In 1850, the northern portion of the state of California declared itself to be an independent country to be known as the Great Republic of Rough and Ready. • Before he became a famous actor and director in his own right, Clint Eastwood was fired from bit parts in several films. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • “I’m always looking for ways to jazz up recipes for chicken, since we eat it so much. I like to bread chicken cutlets in different things, and a suggestion from a friend that I recently tried was delicious! To add flavor to chicken breading, use a tablespoon of a dry seasoning packet, such as one for making Italian or ranch dressing. They have a lot of flavor and really change the taste of fried chicken.” -- R.L. in Tennessee (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Squeaky Stairs Q: The stairs down to my basement squeak like crazy when I walk on them. What's causing this, too much humidity? -- Harriet S., Wheeling, W.Va. A: Humidity can cause wooden stairs and floorboards to swell slightly. Dry air can have the opposite effect. Temperature fluctuations also can play a role in increasing the amount of squeaking from a stair tread. Wood is fairly reactive to changes in its environment -- that's part of its strength. Of course, that doesn't solve the problem of annoying squeaks from the treads as you walk up or down the stairs. So, tackle it head-on. Or tread-on, as it were.

damaged boards should be replaced. If the damage was caused by water, find and stop the water problem, as it can cause other issues throughout the basement. If a tread appears to be in good condition but sags visibly when someone walks on it, replace that tread. Now, if there's no major damage or sagging, the squeaks can be dealt with fairly cheaply. Have a helper walk up and down the stairs while you pinpoint and mark the squeaky areas. Then, shim the pinpointed spots -- drive small wooden wedges (available at the hardware store) between the underside of the tread and the front riser at each spot. Have your helper test the shimmed tread; if it worked, use wood glue to keep the shims in place.

A stair squeaks when the tread (where you put your foot) rubs against a riser (one of the vertical boards that support the tread). Depending on the amount of "give" between the tread and riser, the squeak can be minimal, or rather loud. Inspect the entire staircase. As it's a basement staircase, you should be able to walk underneath it and check things out with a flashlight. Is all of the wood in good condition? Do you see water damage, cracked boards, or misaligned treads or risers? Any

HOME TIP: To temporarily stop small squeaks in stairs or the floor, squeeze graphite powder between the floorboards or into the gap where a stair tread meets the riser. (585) 973-7312 Game Commission Posts Field Forecasts On Web Site Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officers (WCOs), Land Management Group Supervisors (LMSGs) and foresters spend a considerable amount of time gathering information about wildlife population trends in their districts. With the hunting and trapping seasons just around the corner, the Game Commission now is sharing that information through its web site - with those who enjoy Penn’s Woods. To view these field forecasts offered by Game Commission officers, go to the agency’s web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us), and click on the “Field Officer Forecasts,” select the region of interest in the map, and then choose the WCO district of interest from the map. For LMGS or forester reports, select the link to the LMGS Group or forester link of interest within that region. “Our field officers and

foresters provide wildlife forecasts for small game, furbearers, wild turkey, bear and deer within their respective districts,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “These forecasts are based on sightings field officers have had in the months leading up to the 2009-10 seasons, and some offer comparisons to previous wildlife forecasts.” Some WCOs and LMGSs include anecdotal information, as well as hunting and trapping leads in their districts. “The Game Commission offers this information to hunters and trappers to help them in making plans for the upcoming seasons. Many WCO, LMGS and forester reports offer information on where to hunt or trap within their districts, as well as guidance on where to get more information, particularly for trapping certain furbearers, such as beaver and coyotes.” Roe noted the Game Commission divides the state’s 67 counties into six regions, and then each region is divided into WCO

districts comprised of about 300 square miles each. There are 136 WCO districts statewide. Each of the 29 LMGS group is comprised of a number of counties or portions of counties within each region, and seeks to equally distribute the amount of State Game Lands and public access lands within the region. The number of foresters ranges per region, from four to nine.

Game Commission Offers Online Treestand Safety Course As treestand use is a popular part of archery deer seasons, as well as other deer seasons, the Pennsylvania Game Commission is offering hunters the opportunity to take a free, voluntary online treestand safety course. To take the course, go to the agency’s web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on “Education” in the lefthand column of the homepage, then click on “Treestand Safety Course” in the “Education” box in the upper right-hand corner of the page. “Treestand safety has evolved over the years as new research and statistics become available,” said Keith Snyder, Game Commission HunterTrapper Education Division chief. “What were once considered to be ‘safe’ treestand safety practices 10 years ago are simply not considered ‘safe’ today.” “By reviewing this 15minute interactive, narrated treestand safety course, a hunter will learn about the latest Treestand

Manufacturers Association’s safety standards and guidelines.” Snyder noted that, in 2000, the Game Commission incorporated a specific treestand safety segment into its basic Hunter-Trapper Education course, which is required for all first-time license buyers regardless of age, as well as its voluntary Bowhunter education course. “One of the key messages is the importance of having and using a fullbodied fall restraint device or harness,” Snyder said. “According to the Treestand Manufacturers Association, 82 percent of treestand-related deaths were attributed to the fact that the hunter was not using a fall-restraint devise.” Other treestand safety messages include: Stay away! - Avoid permanent stands; they weaken with age, damage

trees and are eyesores. Smart choice! - Use stands certified by the Treestand Manufacturers Association (TMA). They are commercially designed and tested to meet high standards. Read the directions! Read and follow manufacture’s guidelines. Practice with stands before hunting. Look carefully! - Inspect all stands and climbing equipment before each use. Choose wisely! - Select only suitable trees. Avoid dead trees or those with loose bark. Buckle up! - Use a fallrestraint device, preferably a full-body harness, any time your feet leave the ground. This includes climbing up and down the tree. Choose a harness that will keep you upright and will not restrict your breathing. Keep it short! - Make sure there is no slack in the fall-restraint tether

when you are in a sitting position. Hold on tight! - Maintain three points of contact - at least two feet and one hand, or two hands and one foot - with the climbing system, ladder or tree at all times while climbing. And remember to use a fall restraint system, preferably a full-body harness, anytime your feet leave the ground. Climb safely! - Use a haul line to pull up gear. If hunting with a firearm, make sure it is unloaded and the muzzle is covered! Never attach the line near the trigger or trigger guard. Ask a friend! - Use 3 persons to set-up any ladder-type treestand. Hunt with a plan! In the event of a fall, be prepared to help yourself. Have someone contact authorities if you don’t return at an established time.

Hunters Reminded That Licenses Still Must Be Displayed PA Game Commission -- The omission of a regulation that has been in place for decades in this year’s digest has caused some hunters and trappers to wonder whether they still are required to display their licenses in the middle of the back as has been done for many, many years. Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe answered, “Yes, it still needs to be displayed.” Roe noted that the Game Commission is supporting House Bill 460, sponsored by Rep. Neil Goodman (D-Schuylkill), which proposes to remove the statutory requirement that licenses be displayed, and thereby allow hunters to place their hunting license in their wallet with other ID. Roe said, when the agency was drafting the digest, it was believed that the HB 460 may be enacted before the start of the license year on July 1. So, to avoid potentially conflicting information, a decision was made to modify the wording about the requirement that licenses must be displayed.

The More, The Merrier

By Tresa Erickson Some folks prefer hunting solo. They enjoy being out in the field alone and having no one to account for. Others prefer hunting with a few buddies. Not only do they have someone to look out for them, but they have someone to share stories and tips with. If you are just beginning, you might find it best to hunt with others, at least for the time being. Don’t know of any hunters? No problem. You can join a hunting club. Hunting is as popular as ever, and there are hundreds of hunting clubs across the country. To find one in your area, conduct a search online. You will find many Web sites where you can look up hunting clubs in your area. Before you contact any clubs, be aware that membership usually does not come free. You will probably have to pay some sort of annual or monthly fees. There are several perks to being part of a hunting

Members often receive information on various locations and developments in the field as well as discounts on hunting gear and equipment at a number of retailers. You might also receive information on various tournaments in the area and the chance to represent the club at a particular one. Other perks include access to privately owned lands, accommodations at certain lodges or cabins, guided hunts and more. As with anything, you need to choose a hunting club carefully. Find out what type of hunting the club does. If you’re interested in hunting whitetail deer using dogs, make sure the club is akin

to that. If the club owns land, find out how much, where it is located, how wooded it is, what kind of game it holds and how many members use it. Ask to see records of the harvest and compare the acreage to the number of members. Most experts recommend there be no more than one member per 100 acres. Find out about any amenities offered on the land as well. Is there a clubhouse or at the very least some sort of shelter with electricity and water? If not, are you prepared to rough it? Bear Steaks With Greek Seasonings Yield: 4 servings 2 lbs. Bear steaks 1/2 cup Olive oil 1/2 cup Lemon juice 1 tbsp. Garlic powder 1 tsp. Salt 1 tsp. Pepper 1 tsp. Combination of oregano -marjoram, rosemary and/or mint Procedures: Trim all visible fat from the bear as it turns rancid rapidly. Whisk the other ingredients together until emulsified. Use the emulsion to marinate the meat for 2-3 hours, refrigerated. Longer marinading before cooking does not improve the meat as the remaining bear fat will go rancid despite refrigeration. Grill, broil or saute the steaks until well done. Bear should always be thoroughly cooked as a trichinosis precaution. Serve immediately. Do not try making a gravy from the marinade as it will usually have picked up a gamy taste from the bear meat.

A Tribute To Sportsmen And Women

By Tresa Erickson Conservation efforts have increased dramatically since the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. An avid sportsman, Roosevelt worked hard to protect the natural resources he so loved. Assisting him in the effort were thousands of fellow sportsmen and women. Together, they

pushed for laws protecting public lands, waters and wildlife, requiring fishing and hunting licenses, and funding state conservation agencies through taxation of gear. As a result, hundreds of thousands of species were saved from extinction, including antelope, elk, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and wood ducks. While Roosevelt was recognized for his efforts, most sportsmen and women

were not. They deserved public recognition, too. Acutely aware of the problem, Pennsylvania gun shop owner Ira Joffe suggested the creation of a day to thank sportsmen and women for their conservation efforts. Governor Raymond Shafer supported the idea and established Outdoor Sportsman’s Day in the state in 1970. The idea for a national day gained momentum with support from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and just a year later, Congress got

into the act. Senator Thomas McIntyre from New Hampshire and Representative Bob Sikes from Florida each presented a bill calling for the establishment of National Hunting and Fishing Day on the fourth Saturday of September. The bills were well received and passed in both houses. President Richard Nixon signed the first proclamation of the day on May 2, 1972. From there, the celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day took off. Every state governor and many city mayors jumped onboard, working diligently to promote the day. National, regional, state and local organizations responded with hundreds of hunting and fishing events. The celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day continues to this day. Each year, prominent figures from politicians to athletes to entertainers serve as chair of the day. Countless events are held everywhere in honor of the conservation efforts of sportsmen and women. These serve to raise awareness of the cause and give others a chance to see how fun hunting and fishing can be.

Online Harvest Reporting Unveiled PA Game Commission -- Those participating in the state’s archery deer seasons will be the first to be able to file their harvest reports through the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s new online system. To report a deer harvest online, go to the Game Commission’s web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on the blue box in the upper right-hand corner of the website, select “Harvest Reporting,” then click on the “Start Here” button at the bottom of the page, choose the method of validating license information, and click on the checkbox for the harvest tag being reported. A series of options will appear for a hunter to report a harvest. After filling in the harvest information, click on the “Continue” button to review the report and then hit the “Submit” button to complete the report. Failing to hit the “Submit” button will result in a harvest report not being completed.

EASY: The easy way to find a buyer for items you want to sell is a reader ad in the Moneysaver Shopping Guide or Shopping News. ALFRED STATE COLLEGE’S DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS DISTRIBUTING “FLU KITS” TO STUDENTS Alfred, NY, September 2009- Alfred State College’s Division of Student Affairs made a pre-emptive strike against the outbreak of influenza-like-illnesses (ILI) recently by distributing “flu kits” to students at both campuses during the lunch and dinner hours at their respective dining halls. The flu kits included reusable thermometers, hand sanitizer, soap, tea, soup, and other items, presented in re-usable cloth bags. Members of the Health Services staff were also on hand to answer questions. The school will also host an open forum regarding ILI to inform campus constituents about its preparedness planning and answer any questions regarding H1N1.

NOTICE As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.

STAYING AHEAD IN UNCERTAIN FINANCIAL TIMES by John Addison (NAPSA)—Whatever the economic climate, following a few financial principles can help protect your nest egg and retirement plan. Try these simple tips: Stay Focused- Remember that the best way to ride out the ups and downs of the stock market is to maximize the power of dollar cost averaging—investing a certain fixed amount consistently, regardless of market fluctuations. While the technique does not ensure profit or protect against loss, history shows that you’ll make up 80 percent of your bear market loss within the first year of recovery—but only if you stay in the market. Slash Bills- Take a look at your regular bills and find places to cut costs. An easy place to start: auto and homeowner’s insurance—even if you’ve been with the same agency for a long period of time. Try to get a quote from a number of insurers every two years. Credit Counts- To keep your all-important credit score attractive, pay your bills on time, limit the number of credit cards you have and avoid financing big-ticket items all at once. Credit scores affect the rates you pay for loans and credit cards, car insurance and more. Protecting your score can be a smart way to save.

Reduce Risk- In uncertain times, having good legal protection makes sense. It can help limit your vulnerability and can be more affordable than you might expect. Boost Income- Adding a second or third job is a great way to get through a crunch. You might even start your own business on the side to earn some extra cash—just be sure to keep start-up costs to a minimum. Create An Emergency Fund- Experts recommend having an emergency fund of at least six months’ savings. A few tips: Open a separate savings account or money market account and designate it for emergency only. You might also put your single bills or coins in a jar each day, or, once you’ve paid off a big debt, keep those payments coming—into your emergency fund. Learn More- Financial professionals at Primerica have created a guide that can show how to take control of your financial life. To get a copy of “How Money Works,” write to Primerica, 3120 Breckinridge Blvd., Duluth, GA 30099, ATTN: Corporate Relations, or call (770) 564-6329. DONNA’S DAY: CREATIVE FAMILY FUN By Donna Erickson “HALLOWEEN VISION” MASQUERADE Walk into eyeglass-frame shops, and you’ll likely see a promotional poster to reassure you that their glasses will enhance your look. I remember an ad that went something like this -- “A face is like a work of art and should have a great frame.” I have to agree, especially at Halloween, when adults and kids want a quick, artsy masquerade for a party or a lastminute trick-or-treat costume. But you don’t need to purchase frames for this idea. Just scout around for old pairs of sunglasses or find

cheap plastic frames in your kids’ dress-up box. You’ll also need craft items and a bottle of household glue. So what’s your “vision” for a character you’d like to be? Here are ideas to get you started for lastminute oneof-a-kind looks for all ages: *** BIRD GLASSES Glue craft feathers in bright colors around the top outside edges of the glasses. Glue more feathers on some twine or yarn, then attach to the rims and let them dangle. *** DINOSAUR OR IMAGINATIVE CREATURE GLASSES Draw a wacky reptile-like forehead design on thick green or brown craft foam sheet or poster board. Add scales with markers.

MOMENTS IN TIME-The History Channel • On Oct. 20, 1774, the First Continental Congress creates the Continental Association, which calls for a complete ban on all trade between America and Great Britain of all goods, wares or merchandise. It was one of the first acts of Congress behind which every colony firmly stood. • On Oct. 22, 1797, the first parachute jump of note is made by Andre-Jacques Garnerin from a hydrogen balloon 3,200 feet above Paris. As he failed to include an air vent at the top of the prototype, Garnerin oscillated wildly in his descent, and he landed shaken but unhurt. • On Oct. 24, 1861, workers of the Western Union Telegraph Company link the nation's eastern and western telegraph networks, completing the first transcontinental line. The obstacles to building the line were huge. Among other things, Sioux warriors had cut a completed part of the line and took a long section of wire for making bracelets. • On Oct. 19, 1931, David Cornwell, later known as spy novelist John le Carre, is born in Poole, England. He joined the British Foreign Service in 1959. His 1986 book, "A Perfect Spy," was the first of his novels not submitted to the British government for approval and possible censorship, given his former intelligence status. • On Oct. 25, 1944, during the Battle of the Leyte Gulf, the Japanese deploy kamikaze ("divine wind") suicide bombers against American warships for the first time. More than 1,321 Japanese aircraft crash-dived their planes into Allied warships during the war. • On Oct. 21, 1962, Chubby Checker sings his 1960 No. 1 hit, "The Twist," on Ed Sullivan's variety show. His appearance boosted sales of the record, and in January the song hit No. 1 again, making "The Twist" the only record ever to top the charts twice. • On Oct. 23, 1989, 23 people die in a series of explosions sparked by an ethylene leak at the Phillips Petroleum Company factory in Pasadena, Texas. A subsequent investigation found that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had not done a comprehensive inspection of the plant since 1975. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • “If you are making cookies with raisins, do yourself a favor and soak them in hot water for about 10 minutes prior to using. I had never done this before, and my sister-in-law suggested it. It makes such a difference. The raisins get plump and juicy.” -- A Reader, via e-mail from Minnesota ***

In observance of Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, we want to remind you of some precautions you can take. • Practice home fire drills. • Plan more than one way to get out of a room. • Unplug counter appliances when not in use. • Store cigarettes, lighters and matches out of children’s reach. • Never use an outdoor gas/charcoal grill indoors.

If there is a fire… • Get out immediately. • Call 9-1-1 from outside the burning structure. • Be sure to give the operator complete information— address, problem, number of people inside, etc. • Don’t take time to take things with you. • When leaving, get on your hands and knees and crawl. • Yell to get the attention of anyone else in the building. • Once out, never go back unless the fire department says it is OK.

We would like to add a special "Thank You" to the All Our Local Fire Departments. A public service message from
