Move to Cup Paying Off for A.J. Allmendinger A.J. Allmendinger is hardly alone. Every driver who migrated into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from IndyCar, ChampCar and/or Formula One has faced difficulties, oft times unanticipated, in moving to stock cars. The one great success story so far is Juan Pablo Montoya, who made the Chase in his third try. But Allmendinger, 27, is getting better, and in marked contrast to many others, also is still around. The driver of the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 44 Dodge, Allmendinger, from Los Gatos, Calif., finished seventh in the recent AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. It was his

fifth top-10 finish of the year, and it moved him up two spots to 24th place in the Sprint Cup point standings. Prior to this season, Allmendinger had only two top-10 finishes in 66 tries. “I come to the track every weekend trying to be as competitive as I can and win races,” he said earlier this year. “It doesn’t matter if you’re third or 33rd in points, you have the same objective every weekend, and that’s to win. “I think the motivation comes from the effort that is put in every week by Richard Petty Motorsports and the people that build the cars for me. I really feel that I’m getting in really good race cars that are fast and competitive. It takes a lot of hard work and sweat to get ready for these races, and you don’t want to let anybody down. You’re motivated to win for yourself, your sponsors, your team. ... There’s plenty of reason to get motivated every week.” Allmendinger took great pride in his Dover finish. Oddly, he qualified seventh for the season’s first race at the Monster Mile and finished seventh in the second. “Hopefully,” he said, “we can run strong like this in the final eight races to show everyone what kind of team that we have. It was a smooth day. ... I’m just proud of everybody.”

Moving from stardom in one major series to mediocrity in another can be tough. “I’m not immune from losing confidence, but I certainly think the equipment that Richard Petty Motorsports puts me in allows me to stay positive every week,” he said. “I don’t think that you can compete at this level of motorsports without having confidence in your ability as a race-car driver. “This is a competitive sport. There are very talented teams and drivers in NASCAR all shooting for the same thing: to win. ... If you don’t have confidence out

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States, didn’t learn to read until he was 17 years old. • For reasons that are unclear in

the present day, lawmakers in North Carolina once saw fit to forbid racing a rabbit down a public street. • In 1850, the northern portion of the state of California declared itself to be an independent country to be known as the Great Republic of Rough and Ready. • Before he became a famous actor and director in his own right, Clint Eastwood was fired from bit parts in several films. Your junk may be someone else’s treasure! Sell it with a reader ad in the Moneysaver Shopping Guide and Shopping News. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • “I’m always looking for ways to jazz up recipes for chicken, since we eat it so much. I like to bread chicken cutlets in different things, and a suggestion from a friend that I recently tried was delicious! To add flavor to chicken breading, use a tablespoon of a dry seasoning packet, such as one for making Italian or ranch dressing. They have a lot of flavor and really change the taste of fried chicken.” -- R.L. in Tennessee (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Aging in Place Week kicks off on Monday evening, October 12, 2009, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the free cinema presentation of Young at Heart at the David A. Howe Library Auditorium. Young and young at heart are encouraged to experience a movie that defies the stereotypes of aging. “Young at Heart” is a documentary about a New England Chorus where every member is 72 or older, and every song is contemporary. Their determination to master the challenging music for shows reflects a “can-do” approach in later years. The Young @ Heart Chorus shows us it is possible to age gracefully. It is possible to grow old without growing boring. It is possible to have white hair, a hearing aid and a device that helps you breathe, and still disco dance while singing “Stayin’ Alive”. In 2008 the film won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival, the Paris Cinema International Film Festival, Ghent Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Bergen International Film Festival, Warsaw Film Festival and others. Become inspired! Young At Heart is sponsored by the Allegany County Office for the Aging and the Allegany County Senior Foundation. Donations will be accepted to support the Allegany County United Way. In addition, Chairman Curtis Crandall from the Allegany County Board of Legislators will be present to declare the week of October 12-18, 2009, as Allegany County Aging in Place Week. On Tuesday, October 13, 2009, learn about fire extinguisher safety at the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department, Main Street, Wellsville, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. When used properly, fire extinguishers can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or controlling a fire until the fire department arrives. Yet, there is no time to read directions in an emergency! Take part in hands on demonstrations and learn about the various types of fire extinguishers; including different sizes, and what type of fire they put out. As part of the upcoming Caregiver Workshop Series presented by Allegany County Office for the Aging, Thursday, October 15, 2009 will focus on Health Insurance issues and strategies for paying for healthcare. The free caregiver workshop will be presented at the Crossroads Commerce and Conference Center, located in Belmont, New York. For further information on the entire Caregiver Workshop Series, please contact the Allegany County Office for the Aging at 585-268-

9390. On Friday, October 17, 2009, join Eric Hausman, Lead Trainer on Medicare for the New York State Office for the Aging and Medicare Rights Center in NYC, to explore Medicare Basics. This free luncheon presentation will empower providers, seniors and caregivers on how to prevent healthcare fraud and better understand how to navigate the Medicare system. Lunch will be provided and pre-registration is required by contacting Lynne Palmiere at 585-593-5223 ext. 12 by Friday, October 9, 2009. On Saturday, October 18, 2009, adults and seniors are invited to explore the 1st Annual Aging in Place Expo in the Wellsville Elementary Gymnasium, Wellsville, NY, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. This local initiative promotes one’s ability to continue to live safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or physical ability. The Aging in Place Expo will demonstrate how to create homes that are accessible and safe, improve healthy lifestyles, prevent falls that can lead to serious injuries, connect to transportation resources, and discover long-term care options. Door prizes will be drawn throughout the morning. Aging in Place Week concludes with the 1st Annual Ridgewalk Active Older Adult’s Experience. Don’t miss this fun, 2 mile educational trail walk for Active Older Adults 55 years of age and older who are looking for an easy to moderate “in the woods” experience. This is a guided walk, mainly offroad and on flat terrain. The cost is just $10.00 and includes a tee-shirt, door prizes and access to the Jones Memorial Hospital Finish Line Arena. Enjoy some time in the woods and learn about our environment! Pre-registration is required by completing an on-line entry form at www.ridgewalk.com or by calling the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce at 585-5935080. National Aging in Place Week was first celebrated in 2003 in six locations across the country. In 2006, events expanded to over 60 locations, which show how important this issue has become in our society. The Allegany County Community Partnership on Aging is pleased to take part and to continue to make Allegany County a great place to live and age. For further information on any of the activities, please feel free to contact the Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc., at 585-593-5223. f

Arkport Cycles 1 Main Street, Arkport, NY 2 minutes from I-86, Exit 34 607-295-7426 Bear Steaks With Greek Seasonings

Yield: 4 servings 2 lbs. Bear steaks 1/2 cup Olive oil 1/2 cup Lemon juice 1 tbsp. Garlic powder 1 tsp. Salt 1 tsp. Pepper 1 tsp. Combination of oregano -marjoram, rosemary and/or mint Procedures: Trim all visible fat from the bear as it turns rancid rapidly. Whisk the other ingredients together until emulsified. Use the emulsion to marinate the meat for 2-3 hours, refrigerated. Longer marinading before cooking does not improve the meat as the remaining bear fat will go rancid despite refrigeration. Grill, broil or saute the steaks until well done. Bear should always be thoroughly cooked as a trichinosis precaution. Serve immediately. Do not try making a gravy from the marinade as it will usually have picked up a gamy taste from the bear meat.

Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officers (WCOs), Land Management Group Supervisors (LMSGs) and foresters spend a considerable amount of time gathering information about wildlife population trends in their districts. With the hunting and trapping seasons just around the corner, the Game Commission now is sharing that information through its web site - with those who enjoy Penn’s Woods. To view these field forecasts offered by Game Commission officers, go to the agency’s web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us), and click on the “Field Officer Forecasts,” select the region of interest in the map, and then choose the WCO district of interest from the map. For LMGS or forester reports, select the link to the LMGS Group or forester link of interest within that region. “Our field officers and foresters provide wildlife forecasts for small game, furbearers, wild turkey, bear and deer within their respective districts,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “These forecasts are based on sightings field officers have had in the months leading up to the 2009-10 seasons, and some offer comparisons to previous wildlife forecasts.” Some WCOs and LMGSs include anecdotal information, as well as hunting and trapping leads in their districts. “The Game Commission offers this information to hunters and trappers to help them in making plans for the upcoming seasons. Many WCO, LMGS and forester reports offer information on where to hunt or trap within their districts, as well as guidance on where to get more information, particularly for trapping certain furbearers, such as beaver and coyotes.” Roe noted the Game Commission divides the state’s 67 counties into six regions, and then each region is divided into WCO districts comprised of about 300 square miles each. There are 136 WCO districts statewide. Each of the 29 LMGS group is comprised of a number of counties or portions of counties within each region, and seeks to equally distribute the amount of State Game Lands and public access lands within the region. The number of foresters ranges per region, from four to nine.

To take the course, go to the agency’s web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on “Education” in the lefthand column of the homepage, then click on “Treestand Safety Course” in the “Education” box in the upper right-hand corner of the page. “Treestand safety has evolved over the years as new research and statistics become available,” said Keith Snyder, Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education Division chief. “What were once considered to be ‘safe’ treestand safety practices 10 years ago are simply not considered ‘safe’ today.” “By reviewing this 15minute interactive, narrated treestand safety course, a hunter will learn about the latest Treestand Manufacturers Association’s safety standards and guidelines.” Snyder noted that, in 2000, the Game Commission incorporated a specific treestand safety segment into its basic Hunter-Trapper Education course, which is required for all first-time license buyers regardless of age, as well as its voluntary Bowhunter education course. “One of the key messages is the importance of having and using a fullbodied fall restraint device or harness,” Snyder said. “According to the Treestand Manufacturers Association, 82 percent of treestand-related deaths were attributed to the fact that the hunter was not using a fall-restraint devise.” Other treestand safety messages include: Stay away! - Avoid

“Integrity - Quality...A Great Combination” Take Odor Out Of The Equation

By Tresa Erickson You’ve been looking forward to the start of deer season for months, and now that the time has finally come, you’re all set. You’ve got the equipment and the place, and tomorrow morning, you’re heading off to bag the big one. In your rush, don’t forget to do something about your scent. Deer have a keen sense of smell and can detect the odor of humans long before seeing them. Just one

small whiff of a hunter is all it takes to send a deer flying in the opposite direction. To ensure this doesn’t happen to you, you need to take steps to cover up your scent. As you are getting ready in the morning, use scent-free products. Shower with scent-free soap and shampoo made specifically for hunters. Dry off with towels that have been washed in scentfree detergent. Brush your teeth with baking soda. Wear clothes that have been washed in scent-free detergent and dried

Take Extra Care On The Water

By Tresa Erickson With all of the guns, bows, arrows, knives and other equipment involved, there is no doubt that hunting can be risky. Add to the mix boats, and you can see just how dangerous hunting can be.

outside or in the dryer with scent-free fabric softener. Try to leave your house as scent free as possible. Once you get into the field, you have two options for dealing with odor. You may continue to eradicate it using scent-absorbing sprays and powders, or you may conceal it using cover scents. If you go this route, use scents that would be found in the area. Deer are intelligent. If they detect an odor in the area they aren’t familiar with, they won’t stick around to find out what it is. Whatever your choice, make sure you apply the products to yourself and your equipment and gear often. If you are using a tree stand, you will want to cover it as well. Chances are you will perspire when out and about. To control this, use odor block anywhere on your body where you might perspire, including your armpits, backs of your knees and your feet. Leave no stone unturned when it comes to human odor. Cover everything you come into contact with and reapply products often, especially to your hands. Be wary of eating in the woods. You don’t want the whiff of a chip to scare off a deer. Once it detects an unfamiliar scent, it won’t come back to the area for a long, long time.

When hunting in a boat, you must be careful. You should create an itinerary stating where you plan to go and when you will return and leave it with someone at home. You should bring a boat that is in good condition and large enough for you, your passengers and your gear. You should carry the right safety equipment, including a personal flotation device for each person onboard, a throwable personal flotation device and visual distress signals. Once you arrive at your destination, you should inspect your boat thoroughly and make any necessary repairs. You should also check the weather. If bad weather is expected, don’t go out. Stay at your hotel or head for

home. If good weather is expected, pack the boat, being careful to stash the gear low and distribute the weight evenly. You should treat firearms the same as you would when transporting them in your car. Unload and case them. If hunting with another person, place one unloaded firearm in the bow of the boat with the muzzle pointing forward. Place the other in the stern with the muzzle pointing rearward. Once you are on the water, you should hunt back to back if with another person. This will keep the zone of fire in front of each of you and help stabilize the boat. Be careful about swinging into the other hunter’s line of fire. If you both shoot from the same side of the boat, you could throw off the balance and tip over the

boat. Hunting in a boat offers many benefits, including access to areas you may not have had otherwise. You do, however, need to take extra caution when on the water. Don’t take things for granted and do your best to stay alert. Just one second of carelessness could cost you big time.

Hunters Reminded That Licenses Still Must Be Displayed

PA Game Commission -- The omission of a regulation that has been in place for decades in this year’s digest has caused some hunters and trappers to wonder whether they still are required to display their licenses in the middle of the back as has been done for many, many years. Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe answered, “Yes, it still needs to be displayed.” Roe noted that the Game Commission is supporting House Bill 460, sponsored by Rep. Neil Goodman (D-Schuylkill), which proposes to remove the statutory requirement that licenses be displayed, and thereby allow hunters to place their hunting license in their wallet with other ID. Roe said, when the agency was drafting the digest, it was believed that the HB 460 may be enacted before the start of the license year on July 1. So, to avoid potentially conflicting information, a decision was made to modify the wording about the requirement that licenses must be displayed.

The More, The Merrier

By Tresa Erickson Some folks prefer hunting solo. They enjoy being out in the field alone and having no one to account for. Others prefer hunting with a few buddies. Not only do they have someone to look out for them, but they have someone to share stories and tips with. If you are just beginning, you might find it best to hunt with others, at least for the time being. Don’t know of any hunters? No problem. You can join a hunting club. Hunting is as popular as ever, and there are hundreds of hunting clubs across the country. To find one in your area, conduct a search online. You will find many Web sites where you can look up hunting clubs in your area. Before you contact any clubs, be aware that membership usually does not come free. You will probably have to pay some sort of annual or monthly fees. There are several perks to being part of a hunting

to that. If the club owns land, find out how much, where it is located, how wooded it is, what kind of game it holds and how many members use it. Ask to see records of the harvest and compare the acreage to the number of members. Most experts recommend there be no more than one member per 100 acres. 814-228-3811 • 877-817-0411 A Tribute To Sportsmen And Women

By Tresa Erickson Conservation efforts have increased dramatically since the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. An avid sportsman, Roosevelt worked hard to protect the natural resources he so loved. Assisting him in the effort were thousands of fellow sportsmen and women. Together, they pushed for laws protecting public lands, waters and wildlife, requiring fishing and hunting licenses, and funding state conservation agencies through taxation of gear. As a result, hundreds of thousands of species were saved from extinction, including antelope, elk, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and wood ducks. While Roosevelt was recognized for his efforts, most sportsmen and women were not. They deserved

public recognition, too. Acutely aware of the problem, Pennsylvania gun shop owner Ira Joffe suggested the creation of a day to thank sportsmen and women for their conservation efforts. Governor Raymond Shafer supported the idea and established Outdoor Sportsman’s Day in the state in 1970. The idea for a national day gained momentum with support from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and just a year later, Congress got into the act. Senator Thomas McIntyre from New Hampshire and Representative Bob Sikes from Florida each presented a bill calling for the establishment of National Hunting and Fishing Day on the fourth Saturday of September. The bills were well received and passed in both houses. President Richard Nixon signed the

first proclamation of the day on May 2, 1972. From there, the celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day took off. Every state governor and many city mayors jumped onboard, working diligently to promote the day. National, regional, state and local organizations responded with hundreds of hunting and fishing events. The celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day continues to this day. Each year, prominent figures from politicians to athletes to entertainers serve as chair of the day. Countless events are held everywhere in honor of the conservation efforts of sportsmen and women. These serve to raise awareness of the cause and give others a chance to see how fun hunting and fishing can be.

OUTDOOR CORNER from Faith Bible Church

Bible Study Verse: Colossians 4:5-6 “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (NIV) Thoughts: Reading through the Quest Study Bible, I came across a great metaphor to guide our Christian conversation and behavior. Salt improves taste and preserves food. In the same way, our talk and walk should leave others with the feeling that we acted in a Christ-like manner. Just as salt preserves food for long periods of time, our Christian walk should influence others to have a long-lasting relationship with God. (Tom L.) Action Point: When we’re on a fishing or hunting trip with our friends, we can easily get into a “rut” with our conversations. Let us edify one another, “season with salt”, so that we leave a good taste for others.

Online Harvest Reporting Unveiled

PA Game Commission -- Those participating in the state’s archery deer seasons will be the first to be able to file their harvest reports through the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s new online system. To report a deer harvest online, go to the Game Commission’s web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on the blue box in the upper right-hand corner of the website, select “Harvest Reporting,” then click on the “Start Here” button at the bottom of the page, choose the method of validating license information, and click on the checkbox for the harvest tag being reported. A series of options will appear for a hunter to report a harvest. After filling in the harvest information, click on the “Continue” button to review the report and then hit the “Submit” button to complete the report. EASY: The easy way to find a buyer for items you want to sell is a reader ad in the Moneysaver Shopping Guide or Shopping News. ALFRED STATE COLLEGE’S DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS DISTRIBUTING “FLU KITS” TO STUDENTS Alfred, NY, September 2009- Alfred State College’s Division of Student Affairs made a pre-emptive strike against the outbreak of influenza-like-illnesses (ILI) recently by distributing “flu kits” to students at both campuses during the lunch and dinner hours at their respective dining halls. The flu kits included reusable thermometers, hand sanitizer, soap, tea, soup, and other items, presented in re-usable cloth bags. Members of the Health Services staff were also on hand to answer questions. The school will also host an open forum regarding ILI to inform campus constituents about its preparedness planning and answer any questions regarding H1N1.

NOTICE As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. When they set out three years ago to earn their gold award they never thought it would be as hard as it turned out to be. After working to do the main requirement which consisted of 30 hours of leadership and 40 hours of career work (job shadowing, college visits or a paying job), we needed to do a project that served the community and added up to 65 hours. This was not really hard to complete but after one project fell through we had to go back to square one. The leader, Connie Serkleski, who works at the Wellsville Manor Care Center, knew that there was a need to have the buildings west unit courtyard re-landscaped. After settling on this project; the girls got started with grueling hours of weeding, cutting back ivy, hauling dirt (10 tons) and replanting all the while the residents of the nursing home watched and cheered them on. As Hillari Dickerson said, “We weeded on the hottest day of the year and hauled more dirt and planted on the rainiest.” After the courtyard was completed, many compliments came from family members of the residents on what a great job the girls did. A banquet was held for the girls on August 22 at the Genesee Fire Hall where their friends and family members joined in this special recognition. Amy Fuller, Girl Scout director for the Oswayo Valley neighborhood, lead a reflection ceremony down the path of girl scouting, which all four girls have traveled together from Daisies to Senior Scouts. As Junior Girls Scouts, they earned the Bronze award by painting and fixing up the church basement where their weekly meetings were held. As Cadets, they earned the Silver award where community service and a 40 hour project came in to play. For this project they went to the Oswayo Valley Senior Center on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and helped in many ways by painting nails, serving meals and helping deliver meals on wheels with the drivers from the center. Their favorite part was playing pool with a man named, Walt. Brooke Serkleski said, “That it was such a great experience that she would like to go into a career working with the elderly.” At the gold award dinner, the leader, Connie Serkleski and the co-leaders, Kim Dickerson, Roxanne Serkleski, Pauline Shutt and Toni Maille presented the girls with fleece tied blankets into which their patches they had earned and photos highlighting the past thirteen years in scouting were sewn onto the blankets. Connie Serkleski said, “I am very proud of these girls, there were times during the project that we all wanted to give up but together we pushed on.” “Great jobs girls and best wishes if you can make it through this you can do anything!” f

JMH URGES WOMEN TO TALK ABOUT BREAST CANCER OCT. 14 Wellsville, NY (October 1, 2009) In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jones Memorial Hospital is inviting women of all ages to ask questions and learn more at a special meeting called “Let’s Talk About Breast Cancer.” Set for 6pm on Wednesday, October 14 in the Walchli Education Center at JMH, the meeting is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about breast cancer and the imaging options that are available. Dr. Edwin Acosta, a board certified radiologist on the medical staff at Jones Memorial Hospital and Cyndi Johnson, a women’s healthcare specialist with Fuji Medical, will be available to answer questions and discuss the latest technological advances in imaging and diagnostics. Digital mammograms are one of the most effective tools available in the fight against breast cancer. “Because of the clarity of the images and the ability of the radiologist to zoom in on suspicious areas, it is possible to identify cancers early when they are most treatable,” explained Heather Kelley, Mammo Technologist at JMH. “Because the digital images are available almost immediately and no film development time is needed, the wait time for the patient is less.” f

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • “If you are making cookies with raisins, do yourself a favor and soak them in hot water for about 10 minutes prior to using. I had never done this before, and my sister-in-law suggested it. It makes such a difference. The raisins get plump and juicy.” -- A Reader, via e-mail from Minnesota ***
