History of the Olympic Games Ancient Olympic Games The first Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. The concept of Olympics is to unify all countries. The Olympic Games were introduced by Roman Heracles, a son of Zeus in 776BC. He built the Olympic stadium to honor to his father. After the completion of stadium he walked in a straight line for 400 strides. Later this word became distance. These 400 m distance is the way for modern Olympic track. A runner completes the 400m distance in one lap. Few events are held in Ancient Olympic. The Coroebus won the prize participating in the event of naked running at the Olympic. He was first Olympic champion in history. The Milo of Croton is the man win a victory in six Olympics. The Games were banned in 393 by Roman emperor. The games were outlawed as a pagan festival. Nearly 1500 years later the Olympic Games took rebirth. Modern Olympic Games Olympic Games were held every four years. Olympiad means the period between two celebrations. In 1892, the Pierre De Coubertin was began the revival of Olympic Games. After two years later he arranged a meeting with 79 delegates. In this meeting the Coubertin spoke the Olympic Games. Most of the delegates agreed with Coubertin and decided to construct a committee to organize the games. The committee became the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC was founded in 1894. It is the revolution of the modern Olympic Games. The Demetrious Vikelas was the first president of Olympic Committee. The Demetrious Vikelas was come from Greece. In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games opened in the first week of April. Approximately 241 participants are come from 14 nations. The Greek government is didn’t donate fund for construction of a stadium. One Greek architect named as Georgios Averoff donated one million drachmas to construct the Panathenaic Stadium. At first the modern games were not publicized internationality. In this, target shooting, weight lifting, sprints, shot put, cycling, gymnastics, swimming and marathon events are held in first Olympic Games. The Olympic Flag On 1914, the Pierre de Coubertin created the Olympic flag. The Olympic flag contains five interconnected rings with white background. The five rings indicate the five substantial continents and interconnected represents earned friendship from these Olympic competitions. The five rings having different colors. The colors from left to right are blue, yellow, black, green and red. In the year 1920, the first Olympic flag was flown. The entire flag constitute the nature of the Olympic Games. Since 1960, the Olympic anthem is also played at every Olympic Games. The Olympic flame is lit in front of the Temple of Hera at Olympia, Greece. The flame is lit by a woman wearing ancient-style vests and using a curved mirror and the sun. This Olympic flame depicts the divinity connection between ancient and modern Olympic Games. The torch is carried by the runners of the participating countries. The flame is

kept alight until the Games have completed. Finally the torch remains lit in the closing ceremony. The Olympic Games have been held in many countries starting in Athens, Paris, St.Louis, London, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Berlin, Helsinki, Melbourne, Rome, Tokyo, Mexico, Munich, Montreal, Moscow, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and china (2008). About Olympic Medals In the Ancient Olympic Games, the olive crown wears on his head to first place winner. The second and third place winners are nothing to receive. The Olympic medals were introduced in 1896 modern Olympic Games. The silver medal presented to first place winner after that this was changed. Since 1904 onwards the “gold medal” is introduced in place of old one. The Olympic medals are 70 mm diameter and 6mm thick. Actually the medals are not entirely gold. Originally the medals are in silver and it is coated with 6 grams of gold. The Swedish shooter named as Oscar Swahn is the oldest Olympic medalist at 1920 Antwerp Games. Beijing Olympics Games are 29th Modern Olympic Games. Really Beijing Olympics are the 26th staging of the games. The entire Olympic history, the Olympic Games were not held in the years 1916, 1940 and 1944. Due to World wars of First and Second, the Olympic Games were not held. Athletics, Archery, Baseball, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Beach Volleyball, Cycling BMX, Cycling Track, Canoe/Kayak Slalom, Cycling Road, Canoe/Kayak Flatwater, Cycling Mountain Bike, Diving , Equestrian, Football, Fencing, Gymnastics Rhythmic, Gymnastics Artistic, Trampoline, Hockey, Handball, Judo, Modern Pentathlon, Rowing, Softball, Sailing , Shooting, Synchronized Swimming, Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Water Polo and Wrestling are events held in Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The Olympic Games are the largest media events in the world. Over 16,000 journalists’ broadcasters and 3.8 billion spectators watched the games on television in Sydney games in 2000. Currently 204 countries participate in the Olympics.
