His early life was filled with forced membership in the Young Communists, reciting the party line, and doing odd jobs around the neighborhood to help feed his family. Csaba entered the Soviet army at 16 because it was a paycheck and it got him away from the hopelessness of his life. After several years with virtually no advancement in rank or pay, Private Bedel was approached by General Alexei Stamov to join a specialized team. After five years on General Stamov's payroll, Bedel left the army with forged papers, and a forged visa to England. In England, Bedel spent some time learning English and French and then joined Stamov's private gang of high-tech thieves. In the next few minutes, Csaba's memory of events and their sequence is vague at best, but both he and the lab tech were injected with some variations of the formula (possibly multiple formulas) and both were irradiated with high doses of gamma particles. The thieves had accidently shut down the magnet containment facility, releasing in moments an estimated more radiation than in the first week of the Chernobyl meltdown incident. Fortunately, Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. has triple backups in case of such an incident, and external magnetic shields were automatically triggered to contain the gamma particulate matter, preventing the radiation from reaching the public. Csaba and Kevin were the only survivors of the incident. After a 2 week stay in the hospital, the young thief accidently discovered his new powers. He spent months in prison learning how to use his powers without alerting the prison guards to their existence, and eventually he decided that he knew enough and escaped from the high-security facility easily.
