BAGHDAD, IRAQ Type of hell: Conflict It’s hardly surprising that budget airlines lack a “weekend away” charter route to Baghdad. The city has been irreversibly damaged by the Gulf War and years of Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship; a coupling that has brought the once vibrant city to its knees . Since the U.S. invasion, lootings, robberies, kidnappings, and sexual assaults have been rife, but it is the daily slaughter of troops, journalists and civilians that terrify the most. Open-top bus tours of the city have become a regular feature, ripped open by bombs underneath seats. Although recent years have seen a physical curfew lifted, a psychological one still remains and the streets of Baghdad have been left largely deserted.

BAGDAD, IRAK Soort hel: Conflict Het verwondert nauwelijks dat lage-kostenvliegmaatschappijen nog geen “weekendje weg” reizen naar Bagdad aanbieden.. De stad is onomkeerbaar beschadigd door de golfoorlog en jaren dictatuur onder Saddam Hussein; een samenloop die de eens zo levendige stad op de knieën bracht. Sinds de U.S.A-invasie, zijn plundering, diefstal, ontvoering en verkrachting wijdverbreid, maar het zijn de dagelijkse slachtpartijen op soldaten, journalisten en burgers die de meeste terreur brengen. Open stadsbussen zijn regelmatig het doel, opengereten door bommen die onder de zetels worden geplaatst. Alhoewel de laatste jaren een fysische avondklok opgeheven werd, blijft er een psychische avondklok en de straten van Bagdad zijn meestal leeg en verlaten..

BUJUMBURA, REPUBLIC OF BURUNDI Type of hell : Corruption With the lowest GDP per capita in the world, Burundi is the poorest country on the planet and is scarred by a history of genocide, mass killing and assassinated political leaders. Not only that, but a pool of 178 countries found that Burundi’s people had the poorest satisfaction of life in the world. All in all, it hasn’t got much going for it and it’s unlikely to be your first choice when browsing honeymoon options with your sweetheart. Curfews are enforced in its capital, Bujumbura, and let’s just say that fighting between rebel forces and the government doesn’t just play out in parliament.

Een groep van 178 landen vonden dat het Burundese volk de laagste levensvoldoening had in de wereld. Het volk heeft weinig om voor te gaan en het is onwaarschijnlijk dat je naar dit land je huwelijksreis zou plannen. De avondklok werd verstrengt in de hoofdstad, Bujumbura, en gevechten tussen de rebellen en de regering worden niet alleen in het parlement gevoerd.

CHERNOBYL, UKRAINE Type of hell: Nuclear Radiation If you’ve never heard of the doomed city of Chernobyl, you’ve probably been living under a radiated rock for the last decade. In fact, most people here would do pretty much anything to escape the toxicity that oozes from its every pore. Having experienced the worst nuclear accident in history, the city has never recovered and probably never will. Everything is still largely abandoned and remains as it was 20 years ago, with hundreds of miles of uninhabitable space, deserted buildings and poisoned lakes and rivers. In fact, there’s an exclusion zone of 30 kilometres that probably won’t be inhabitable for hundreds of years.

CHERNOBYL, UKRAINE Soort hel: Nucleaire Straling Als je nog nooit van de verdoemde stad Chernobyl hebt gehoord, dan leefde je de laatste decennia onder een radioactieve rots.. In feite zijn de mensen daar tot bijna om het even wat bereid om te ontsnappen aan de besmetting die uit elke porie sijpelt.. De ergste nucleaire ramp gebeurde hier en de stad zal van deze ramp waarschijnlijk nooit bekomen . Alles is hier verlaten en ligt erbij als 20 jaar geleden, met honderden kilometers van onbewoonbaar gebied, verlaten gebouwen en vergiftigde rivieren en meren. In feite is er een verboden gebied van 30 kilometer dat waarschijnlijk voor honderden jaren onbewoonbaar zal blijven.

DHAKA, BANGLADESH Type of hell: Pollution Despite enduring political instability, military suppression and devastation from war and natural disaster, the capital of Bangladesh faces a new crisis over critically high pollution levels. Rapid industrial development has filled the city with so much smog it is causing environmental damage, particularly with the 9.7 million tons of waste dumped in the river by the city each year. It is only a matter of time before disease takes hold. However, Dhaka’s development has seen unemployment levels decrease, which has led to decreases in crime. Better opportunities, weaker immunities -- talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.

DHAKA, BANGLADESH Soort hel: Pollutie Ondanks voortdurende politieke instabiliteit, militaire onderdrukking en de vernietigingen van oorlog en natuurrampen, wordt de hoofdstad van Bangladesh bedreigd door een kritisch hoge pollutie. Een snelle industriële ontwikkeling heeft de stad gevuld met een massa “smog” en dit leidt tot omgevingsschade en een bijkomend neffast effect ten gevolge van de 9,7 miloen ton afval die elk jaar in de rivieren wordt gestort. Het is alleen een kwestie van tijd vooraleer er ziekten zullen opdagen. Hoewel, de ontwikkeling van Dhaka heeft de werkloosheid en met deze ook de misdaadniveaus doen dalen. Betere mogelijkheden en minder immuniteit vertellen een verhaal van “gevangen tussen een harde bodem en een rots”.

Linfen, China Type of hell: Darkness Once voted by Time Magazine as the most polluted city ever, Linfen, China, is so sooty and dark that it makes the prospect of going to hell all the more appealing. Located in a 12-mile industrial belt, and affected by the 50 million tons of coal mined each year in the nearby hills of Shanxi, Linfen doesn’t stand much of a chance. While the air is filled with burning coal, the streets are choking with emissions from jam-packed traffic; in Linfen, there’s no escape from the smog. In fact, you may as well light up and begin a 40-a-day habit -- even a surgical mask won’t save you in this hell on earth. You need to get far, far away, and never return to this industrial wasteland they have the nerve to call a functioning city.

Linfen, China Soort hel: Duisternis Eens door Time Magazine bestempeld als de meest gepoluëerde stad ooit, is Linfen in China zo roetig en donker dat het vooruitzicht om naar de hel te gaan aantrekkelijk wordt.. Gevestigd in een 18 km industriële ring, en geaffecteerd door 50 miljoen ton steenkool die jaarlijks worden ontgonnen in de nabije heuvels van Shanxi, heeft Linfen niet veel overlevingskansen. De lucht is gevuld met brandende kool, de straten zijn verstikt door dicht verkeer zodanig dat er in Linfen geen ontsnappen aan de smog is en dat zelfs een medisch masker niemand kan redden van deze hel op aarde. Je moet al heel ver weg gaan , en nooit meer terugkeren naar dit industrieel afvalland, dat ze een funcionele stad durven te noemen.

MOGADISHU, EAST AFRICA Type of hell: Lawlessness While North Africa gets Algiers, East Africa gets the pleasure of Mogadishu -- a city where hierarchy is forever in negotiation. Rebel forces took the city in 1990 and since then there has been a power struggle between Mohammed Ali Mahdi and Mohammed Farah Aidid. In 1992, a rebel war destroyed much of the city with thousands of casualties, and a badly timed drought induced nationwide famine. Despite the city practically closing down, confusion over the head of state continues today and Mogadishu is largely lawless, with no structure of real peacekeeping present, despite a failed effort in 1992 by the U.S. marines.

MOGADISHU, OOST AFRICA Soort hel: Wetteloosheid Terwijl Noord-Africa Algiers heeft, heeft Oost-Africa het sinistere plezier om Mogadishu te hebben: een stad waar de hiërarchie voortdurend onderhandeld wordt. Rebellen veroverden de stad in 1990 en sindsdien is er een machtsstrijd tussen Mohammed Ali Mahdi en Mohammed Farah Aidid. Er is geen gestructureerde vredesbewaring ondanks de pogingengen in 1992 door de Amerikaanse mariniers.

OKLAHOMA CITY, UNITED STATES Type of hell: Natural disasters While it may be all hunky-dory on the musical front, Oklahoma City isn’t the kind of place you’d want to hang out in for too long if you like to keep your feet on terra firma. The weather is frighteningly unpredictable, with blizzards often descending on the city and winds that could knock a high rise clean off its feet. It is, after all, located in the direct path of “Tornado Alley.”

OKLAHOMA CITY, VERENIGDE STATEN Soort hel: Natuurrampen Het mag er misschien prima uitzien op het muzikale front, Oklahoma City is niet de plaats waar je te lang hoeft te verblijven als je je voeten op vaste bodem wil houden. Het weer is er schrikwekkend onvoorspelbaar, met stormen die over de stad neerdalen en windkrachten die een torengebouw van zijn grondvesten kunnen blazen. Per saldo is de stad recht op het pad van “Tornado Alley” gelegen.

PORT MORESBY, PAPUA NEW GUINEA Type of hell: Disease With over 115 new HIV and AIDS cases diagnosed every month at Port Moresby General Hospital, the capital of Papua New Guinea isn’t at the top of this list for much except being the “worst place to live in the world,” according to a 2004 vote by the Economist’s Intelligence Unit. With the population expanding at an uncontrollable rate, employment levels have rocketed, income levels have plummeted and cases of rape, robbery and murder have reached new heights (the murder rate is 23 times that of London). If you don’t have time to pick up some souvenirs, don’t worry; you’ll almost certainly have picked up a disease or two to take home with you.

Door de onconroleerbare bevolkingsaangroei zijn werkgelegenheid en inkomstenniveaus ingestort en het niveau van overvallen, moord en verkrachting heeft ongekende hoogte bereikt (de moordgraad is 23 keer hoger dan in Londen). Als je daar geen tijd hebt om souvenirs te kopen, maak je geen zorgen want je neemt zeker een paar ziektes mee naar huis.

If you want to know what George Orwell was talking about in his novel 1984, look no further than Pyongyang. Still in the throes of communism, the city is so oppressed you just might scream. While its modern-day facade may look like any other Western city, underneath it’s entirely autocratic. Radios and TVs have only one channel, which broadcasts special programs controlled by the government; premarital sex is unheard of; bicycles are banned as part of a political regime to restrict movement and interaction amongst people; and reports suggest (although the government denies) that individuals need permission to travel outside of the city. Indeed, the only enjoyable thing about a vacation here is boarding your flight and getting the hell out.

Als je wil weten wat Georges Orwell bedoelde in zijn roman 1984, kijk dan niet verder dan Pyongyang. Nog altijd in de stuiptrekkingen van het communisme, is de stad nog steeds zo onderdrukt dat je ervan zou huilen. Terwijl haar modern uitziende uiterlijk lijkt op elke westerse stad, heerst er onderhuids totale autocratie. YAKUTSK, RUSSIA Type of hell: Environmental extreme Officially the coldest place on earth, Yakutsk would be a shock to the system for even seasoned Muscovites. Temperatures here often drop to a hypothermia-inducing -58°F, and if it drops below this (which it often does), children get the day off school. Well, it’s either that or wheel them out on stretchers at the end of the day to fur-wearing parents. Visibility in this city of ice and snow isn’t good either; a thick fog often reduces visibility to no more than 10 meters in front of you, if you’re lucky. Another hellish aspect of Yakutsk is its sheer isolation; a whole six time zones away from Moscow, there’s definitely no chance of anyone hearing you scream in this hell on earth.

YAKUTSK, RUSLAND Soort hel: Extreme omgeving Officieel is dit de koudste plaats op aarde; Yakutsk zou een schok geven aan zelfs de Moskovieten die gewend zijn aan de seizoenen.Temperaturen dalen hier tot hypothermische laagten van minus 50 graden en als het lager gaat, wat dikwijls gebeurt, dan krijgen de schoolkinderen een vrije dag. Het is dat of hen op het einde van de dag wegdragen op een veldbed naar hun ouders, die zelf in huiden zijn gehuld. In deze stad van sneeuw en ijs is de zichtbaarheid slecht; dikke mist beperkt dikwijls het zicht tot minder dan 10 meter, als je geluk hebt. Een ander hels aspect van Yakutsk is de verlatenheid; zes tijdzones verwijderd van Moskou is er geen schijn van kans dat ze je zouden horen, zelfs als je schreeuwt in deze hel op aarde.
