GODdard’S Place Update With the Summer in full-swing, GODdard’S Place is anxiously awaiting the help of Mission Teams from the State of Arkansas to come and lend a hand at making preparations to the building located at 1001 South 199th Street in Goddard, Kansas. These ministry efforts are to prepare the facility for ministry this Fall. Mission teams are slated to begin work July 19th and continue the work through the first week of August. Teams will be making physical renovations and even working in the community to survey residents, host sports camps/day camps, provide evening Vacation Bible School-type activities and seek to find a way to utilize this facility to minister most effectively in the Goddard community. In order for this ministry to be most effective, we need churches and individuals to be involved. If churches or individuals would like to contribute funds or resources to help this ministry “take-off”, please notify the HOKSBA office of your intended gifts so that this ministry may be viewed as a viable ministry capable of community impact. Should the facility improvements be complete, this building may even serve more than just students with concerts, gatherings, club meetings of Goddard High School and possibly after school programs, it will hopefully become a community resource center capable of hosting weddings, receptions, conferences and various events. Homeless Ministry We would like to thank the four youth from Calvary Baptist Church that came and volunteered over their spring break at the Baptist Homeless building. On Memorial Day, we served 155 people lunch with the help of volunteers from Metropolitan Baptist Church. Deborah and Johnny will be going to the Southern Baptist Convention from June 22 – 25th, please pray for traveling mercies. For the 4th of July, we are going to have a picnic for the homeless and needy. The following is needed for this event: 5 grills and men to grill the hamburgers and hot dogs, potato salad, desert, volunteers to hand out Gospel Tracts, food bags and Bibles. If you can help with this event, or are willing to help with a fundraiser, please contact Deborah at 204-9517.

It is the time of year for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. I am not attending this year, but do remember a sermon preached in that setting many years ago. It has been so long ago that I don’t remember if I heard it or read it, and I don’t remember who preached the sermon. But I do remember the theme of that message. The theme of the message was that we must keep the main thing, the main thing, and not allow ourselves to be detoured to the side streets of life. Much more recently I read an article calling us again to remember and focus on that which is central. The resounding theme is this, “Keep the main thing, the main thing.” As pastors, when we preach, we must remember that the main theme of our message should be aligned with the main theme of our text. If we are preaching from God’s Word, and His Word has a main emphasis, we should focus on the main emphasis. The result of this kind of Jesus exalting Spirit empowered preaching is that God draws people unto Himself. We must keep the main thing, the main thing. What is the main mission for us as Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association? What is the role to which we are called and the mission to which we must stay true? Our mission as HOK is to assist the churches to be healthy and growing so that every culture of people in our area will have the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel and grow to be fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. What is the main thing for us? It is to create a culture of pastors and churches in this area who are willing to partner together to accomplish this great mission for the glory of our King.

For the last several months, this column has been highlighting several of the keys that are necessary for a successful Sunday School ministry. We have considered: class organization, in-reach and outreach, ministry, and teaching. Now, let’s consider another key to a successful Bible study program—FELLOWSHIP! A search of the thesaurus can give us a good understanding of what this word means and how it can be applied to the Sunday School hour. Consider these words— companionship, friendship, partnership, affiliation & association. Does fellowship automatically happen when you get several people together at the same time? I don’t believe so. Just as you can have a class of students in your room from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, that doesn’t mean that teaching and learning takes place! In the same way, you can plan all the right “activities” but that is no guarantee that a sense of fellowship will be achieved. Fellowship takes time and effort. It is easy to build a friendship with someone with whom we have a lot in common. However, it is much more difficult to reach out to that person who may come across as difficult to befriend. How do we promote fellowship within our Bible study groups? One way is to have regular class or department opportunities for socializing together. Some of these could be held at church, but most should be outside of these walls. While some should be planned far in advance and more detailed in nature, others could be impromptu gatherings for lunch after church or dessert after the Sunday evening service! It is important to have them OFTEN because you know that with everyone’s varied schedules, you never get everyone together at the same time. It is also important to remember that fellowship occurs each week as your class gathers together. Even within your Bible teaching, it is important to involve class members in discussion. It is through this interaction that you get to know your class and they get to know each other. Don’t overlook the importance of receiving prayer requests as this is a great way to get to know others in your class or department. th

If you have not already done so, please mark your calendar for the annual “Flight School” to be held on Monday, August 24 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church. This training event provides opportunity for pastors, Sunday School Directors, and teachers to receive training from Sunday School leaders who have experienced the challenges and successes of Sunday School. Plan now to bring a team of leaders from your church! Be looking for additional information over the next several weeks.

NEW LIFE COMMUNITY BAPTIST NUEVA VIDA

The 9th Annual HOKSBA Fellowship Golf Tournament was held at Hesston Golf Park on Saturday, April 25th. We had 90 golfers, duffers, and hackers out for this event aimed at pulling our association together. The fellowship was absolutely GREAT! It was a wonderful day! After the golf, we gathered for lunch where we enjoyed good food and GREAT fellowship. Brother Kelly Randolph, Senior Pastor at Country Acres Baptist Church, shared a few moments with us from God’s Word. See the HOKSBA website for winners!

Thirty-nine individuals from seventeen churches and three Associations PRAIRIE TRAIL came from Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi to tour our church plants and ministries to determine how they could partner with us in the RIVER COMMUNITY RIVERVIEW kingdom work.

Results of the vision tour include mission teams coming in to do construction and VBS, food drives, school supplies drives and monetary support. As a result of relationships developed from three years of Vision Tours there will be about 850 individuals from 43 churches On Mission in the Heart of Kansas this year. Several are considering a monetary commitment this year or budgeting for long term support. This year already we have a commitment from church planter Norm Duncan to come to Wichita and Chad Pearce is already on the field.

Some of the door prizes drawn for at the luncheon included rounds of golf for four with cart at: Braeburn, Hesston, Derby Golf & Country Club, Reflection Ridge Golf & Country Club, and Rolling Hills Golf & Country Club; and a set of 4 tickets to the Kansas City Royals with seats in the first row behind the Royals dugout. This year the Grand Prize Door Prize included a 2-night stay at the Warren Family, LLC Condo in a Branson, MO. All of the door prizes were donated by companies or individuals and we greatly appreciate their generosity. Summer Interns Brad Simmons, Student Ministries

This summer HOKSBA has three teams working throughout the association. One team is serving at Aviator Church, one is working with our Hispanic church plants, and one is working throughout the other churches in the association. The association team has been in Wichita since, May 29. The two college interns are local, but the high school interns are from across the country: Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas & Wisconsin. They have spent much of their time working alongside Loren Phippen.

As theology students, our heads are filled with theory and consequently, we have all this “knowledge“ we want to share with people while in the ministry. We are shocked when we do not see an immediate change or a positive reaction. Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association has given us a chance this summer to put our theory into practice and learn to share Jesus’ love with the real world by placing us in different settings and challenges that one working in the ministry might come across. This adventure is shared by us four hispanic seminary students from different countries: Adahin Analco (México), Jairo Carmona and Axel Centeno (Nicaragua), and me, Victoria Guerrero (Texas).

And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” God has given me the love for fishing for men as well as for fish. He has allowed me to put the two together by being able to take youth from the Boy’s Ranch fishing and being able to spend this time mentoring and discipling them. Because of this, more of them contact me after leaving the facilities and I am able to connect some of them to our churches. We continue to see lives changed in this ministry. Please continue to pray for this ministry and your involvement in it by donating your time or providing funds for Bibles and other needs. I try to give each one who accepts Christ a study Bible that they can take with them when they leave.

This year’s Evangelism Rally is coming very soon. It will be on August 30th at Olivet Baptist Church, 3440 W 13th St. in Wichita at 6:30pm. The speaker this year will be Ken Weathersby. Ken is the senior strategist for evangelization at the North American Mission Board. Ken has overall responsibility for all evangelism events and strategies at NAMB and is a dynamic speaker. As we have done in the last several years, we will have a small missions fair before the event. This will last from 5:30 to 6:30. Please let us know if you plan on using a table to set up a display for your ministry.

FamilyFest ~ July 10-16, 2010 An Opportunity for a Family Mission Trip

Their first week in Wichita they helped Victory Baptist promote their Vacation Bible School. The next week, Victory held their VBS with the help of a mission team from outside the area. Their second week they helped Crossroads Community in Oaklawn go door to door and let people know about the new church. At the end of the week, they helped out at two of our Good Neighbor Centers: Cottage Grove and Westside. They also went out with people from Pleasantview Baptist Church, and Indian Southern Baptist Church to help them promote their VBS. The rest of their summer will include Kids Kamp and helping at least four more Vacation Bible Schools! During this time the interns are going through a workbook called "Listen to My Life." They are being encouraged to look back over their lives to see how God has been at work, and how God has shaped them to be used by him in unique ways. Our main focus has been to evangelize to the Planeview community alongside local church planter, and former seminary companion, Daniel Diaz. The hispanic population in Planeview has become more numerous in these last years and the need to know Christ is more vital than ever. There are two reactions we usually get when evangelizing: 1) Oh how wonderful, good luck! and 2) Get outta’ here! This has prompted us to pray more and it has given us a determination that was once only a hopeful outlook. More recently we’ve had two weeks of Vacation Bible School that yielded four lives given to Jesus. Seeing these new brothers and sisters in the faith was a time for rejoicing that brought tears to our eyes. However, our time for rejoicing must be accompanied by more laboring. There are many more souls crying out for a meaning in life, and we have been comissioned to share this great gift with the world, one person at a time. Matthew 28:19-20 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

River Festival Loren Phippen, Evangelism Director

Thank you so much for all the help and support this year at the River Fest. This year we had more churches involved in the street evangelism than we ever have had. Sixty-four members from sixteen of our churches worked the streets with the street evangelists from the NAMB ICE team. Praise the Lord! We heard many testimonies of how our members enjoyed and benefited from participating in hands on training on the street. We also had churches that helped with the food, block party trailers, music and follow-up. Walking with Power, the power team this year, did a great job at the River Fest show and also did performances at El Dorado prison, JDF and one of our churches. Numerous souls were touched for the Gospel during this weekend. Many members of the ICE team and the power team commented on how impressed they were at how our association worked together. Please put this event on your schedule for next year and come work the harvest with us.

Disaster Relief Training Offered! Bill Riley, Disaster Relief Chair

The HOKSBA Disaster Relief Committee is prepared to host Feeding Unit Training in late July or August 2009, if there are interested volunteers to attend. This is a great opportunity to learn about the disaster relief ministry, ask questions and consider serving. Following the training, volunteers as they are available, would serve with the KNCSB Feeding Unit and other volunteers from Kansas and Nebraska when deployed on a disaster mission. Please help get the word out regarding this training opportunity. Volunteers that are interested should contact the Heart of Kansas Association office at 943-3446. Set Free Ministry Loren Phippen, Evangelism Director

Praise God! The work is continuing at the Set Free House. The installation of insulation and dry wall is continuing with help from our churches and the mission teams. We now have three of the upstairs rooms insulated and dry walled. Please continue to pray for the completion of this ministry building and pray for God to provide property for the “ranch” which will be needed as soon as we start the ministry at the Set Free House. If you know of someone who has property that would be suitable for the ranch, either to donate or a long term lease, please contact Loren or Mark at the association.

FamilyFest is a partnership with the national Woman’s Missionary Union, the Kansas/Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists, and the Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association. It is designed to give families (age six and up) a prepackaged missions experience. How You Can Participate Think about the needs in the community around your church. How could FamilyFest volunteers assist you and your church members in meeting some of these needs? These volunteers could work on anything you have a vision for: Vacation Bible School, Backyard Bible Clubs, light construction, sport camps, survey work, etc. Perhaps some families in your church would like to travel across town to help another church. Good Neighbor Centers Loren Phippen, Evangelism Director

Our Good Neighbor Centers are still doing a great job serving the needy and hurting in our community. Last month I shared with you about a church in Arkansas who did a food drive for the HOKSBA GNC’s called 2009 cans in 2009. Since that article, I have talked to several churches in and outside of our association who are considering to do food drives to help the centers. Your church may want to raise money for our centers to use at the food bank where we can buy food for as little as 16 cents a pound. Please prayerfully consider how you can get involved in this vital ministry.
