Church Finance Seminar Westview BC, 9am - 1:30pm
What is happening in the Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association? How can I answer that question in only a few words?
Church Finance Leadership Training Seminar On May 2, 2009, Darrell Duncan, CPA, of Johnson, Duncan, Hollowell will lead a workshop for our churches. Darrell has provided the audit for the Kansas Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptist for many years. He has also worked with churches and understands church finance. I want to encourage pastors, treasurers and finance committee members to be a part of this workshop. It will be a great opportunity for us all to think again about how we handle the churches finances and how IRS laws must be applied in the life of the church. The Seminar will be held from 9am to 1:30pm. Lunch will be provided, so please let us know of your attendance.
Discovery Day Church Planting • • • •
May 9, 2009 ~ 9 am till 1 pm at HOK Office Could God be calling you into church planting? How has God equipped you to be a planter? When should you get involved? Where should you plant a church? Come begin the process of discovery. RSVP to Mark Jackson at 943-3446
Disaster Relief Need Equipment for a Church Mission Team? The Heart of Kansas Association has available three chain saws with chaps and helmets for loan to church mission teams upon request from the association office. There is also available a DVD on chain saw safety and operation that each mission team is encouraged to view prior to using the chain saw equipment. The equipment may be reserved on a first come basis. The borrowing organization would assume responsibility for the safe operation of the equipment and returning the equipment in a clean serviceable condition following the mission event. The borrowing church representative will be asked to sign a release of liability to the Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association for use of the equipment. The mission equipment is being provided to assist and encourage our churches to become engaged in hands-on mission activities in sharing God’s love and compassion. HOKSBA also provides opportunities for individuals to participate in mission activities through the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief ministry. The primary purpose of Disaster Relief is to share the love of Jesus Christ through feeding and recovery services resulting from natural disasters. Individuals interested in this ministry may contact the association office or the Disaster Relief Committee at 788-3466 or 788-1237.
River Festival WMU River Fest Picnic Metropolitan BC, 3-6pm
PAST – I heard great reports from many churches across the association who are experiencing record attendance. Since we know that no one comes to the Father except he be drawn by the Father, we know God is at work in the lives of people. Many of the churches of Heart of Kansas are experiencing the working of the Spirit of God in drawing and winning the hearts of people. That is what is happening in HOK.
If you do not wish to receive this newsletter, please contact the association office.

PRESENT – Seven HOK pastors and staff are leaving April 20-23 for Winnipeg, MB, Canada. At the request of the Associational Missions Development Council, we are looking at a potential partnership with our Southern Baptists work in Winnipeg. The potential of such a partnership is really exciting for Heart of Kansas churches. NEAR FUTURE – The Vision Tour is taking place April 27-28. We will be hosting churches and associations from outside KNCSB who will see what the Lord is doing here in HOK. As these churches see what is happening, the Lord may use them to assist our churches in doing the work of our Lord in this place. As we invite these churches to come to HOK to help, what about the churches who are already here? Are there ways that your church could help a sister church or ministry right here in the HOKSBA? It thrills me to see our churches helping one another. And if you want your church to be involved, the Vision Tour might be for you. As a member of HOK, come and see what the Lord is doing across the association, then pray about how the Lord would have you to be involved. FUTURE FUTURE – I have had the opportunity to speak to several men’s groups from our churches over these last months. I have found many men interested in developing their men’s ministry. One idea that has been mentioned is an area wide Men’s Fraternity. This would be an area wide weekly men’s meeting for any men who would have an interest. There would need to be a core team of men to help direct it, but no additional responsibility would be placed on any of our pastors. If you might have an interest in this kind of ministry, you can contact me at the HOK office.

Juvenile Detention Ministry Loren Phippen, Evangelism Director
The first time that I met John (alias) was at the Boys Ranch. It was there that I shared the Gospel with him and he accepted Jesus as his Savior. I worked with John for about 6 months until he left the ranch and went into independent living. He has since stayed in contact with me and I am working on getting him involved in one of our churches. John is continually staying in God’s Word. We continue to see lives changed in this ministry. Please continue to pray for this ministry and your involvement in it by donating your time or providing funds for Bibles and other needs. I try to give each one who accepts Christ a study Bible that they can take with them when they leave.

Set Free Ministry Loren Phippen, Evangelism Director
Praise God! We have passed all of our inspections. We are installing the insulation and soon will start the dry wall. We have had numerous church and mission groups working at the Set Free House. As we get closer to completion, we will need to have property outside of Wichita for a “Ranch”. If you know of someone who has property that we might be able to use for the ranch, either to donate or with a long term lease, please contact Loren or Mark at the Association.
Teaching & Learning in

SUNDAY SCHOOL
An Amazing Spiritual Adventure! By Tom Melton
Terry Beasley, Sunday School Team Leader
Teaching and learning are the foundation of Sunday School ministry. While we can enjoy the “fellowship” aspect of our time together, we must not forsake the teaching of God’s Word. Though we need to take time to show concern for our members and prospective members—reaching out in prayer and ministry—we do so with a strong understanding of the Bible and God’s instruction on how to minister in Jesus’ name. You may have noticed that I used the words “Teaching” and “Learning”. Is there a difference? As a Sunday School teacher—what is your responsibility when it comes to teaching and learning? Teaching is the act of sharing what you know so that others can share your understanding. The teaching act can take on many forms—lecture, large-group or small groupdiscussion, question and answer, hands-on activities, etc. Regardless of the form it takes—good teaching begins with prayer and preparation. Teachers—do you pray weekly for the members of your class? Do you ask for their prayer as you study and prepare for the Sunday lesson? You should— on both counts! Prayer is followed closely by preparation. The teacher who waits until the 11th hour on Saturday night is not doing justice to their teaching nor are they bringing pleasure to God. Certainly, this may happen in emergency situations but it must not be the norm. Begin preparing early in the week—meditating and praying over the scripture passages for the upcoming week. Another important aspect of teaching is understanding the learning needs of your class. Generally, we teach the way we are comfortable teaching—which is not necessarily the best for our learners. Balance is the key. Every lesson should include some lecture, question and answer, small group discussion, and practical application. Variety in the teaching act is essential. Learning is the responsibility of the student. However, it is greatly dependent upon the effort of the teacher. Do you ask questions to see if your class understands the teaching? Do you refer to prior lessons to encourage application of those concepts which have been previously introduced? Do you arrange your classroom so that all class members can participate comfortably in the lesson? Look at your room: is it easy to see the teacher and each other? If you are going to encourage participation in the class—the chairs should be arranged so that classmates can see each other. Have you removed the “clutter” from your room lately? Is the bulletin board the same as it was 6 months ago? We do not want these secondary issues to detract from the primary tasks of teaching & learning. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Associational Flight School (Sunday School teacher and director training) – Monday, August 24th 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Wichita.
On Tuesday the 14th, we celebrated our one year anniversary with 53 who are in recovery from hurts, habits and hang-ups. One lady who has been with us for a year, testified that she had been grieving over sexual abuse as a teenager, emotionally abandoned by her mother and the loss of her dad. She spoke of how her life was broken with no hope or future. When she came to know Christ as her Savior and friend, her life began to turn around and Celebrate Recovery enabled her to face her grief, her hurts and her anger and it has given her hope and a future. She is now happily married and serving in Celebrate Recovery. Celebrate Recovery is a place where you can find support, comfort, and a safe place where you can share without someone condemning you or trying to fix you. We believe the Holy Spirit is the only one who can fix you, so we point you to Jesus Christ who can heal you from your hurt, habit, or hang-up. Join us on Tuesday night in the fireside room for CR at Midway Baptist Church. We are a ministry to the community. We also have a ministry to youth, 6th through 12th grade, called “Life Hurts, God Heals.” In the near future, we will be offering a ministry to kids of Celebrate Recovery families, ages 4 years through 5th grade called “Confident Kids”. All ministries are on Tuesdays at 6:30pm. For more information call Tom or Marilynn Melton at 316-524-4237.
Missions Teams Coming to HOKSBA Mark Jackson, Church Planting Strategist
Through our partnership agreement with Arkansas and by partnering efforts with other churches and associations, we have thirty to thirty-five churches journeying to our association to help start new churches and strengthen existing ones. These teams will range in size from two to one hundred and have an estimated seven hundred and fifty total volunteers. Many of these teams are already committed to a particular ministry and all have a definite time frame when they will be with us. If you have a ministry or event that could benefit from these teams, please contact Mark Jackson, 943-3446 to check on their availability. With the sale of Shiloh, we are searching for locations to house many of these teams. If you have space available to house one or more of these teams please contact Mark Jackson, 943-3446.
WEST SIDE GNC GARAGE SALE/FUND RAISER June 12th & 13th Please come and join us in supporting your neighbors and Wichita Families. Spring Break With the Gospel
Hispanic Church Planting
An Opportunity for a Family Mission Trip
Brad Simmons, Student Ministries
During Spring Break, 27 international students from Wichita State University traveled to Stroud, Oklahoma for a Spring Break Retreat. We spent the week looking at Philippians 1:27-2:18. The theme of the retreat was "Worthy of the Gospel" and we were challenged to live lives worthy of the Gospel based on Paul's words to the Philippians. Within that passage, Paul lifts up Christ as the ultimate example of such a life, and encourages the believers to "be blameless and innocent" and "do all things without grumbling or questioning." Among the 27 people who went, were at least three nonbelievers. Since other students invited them for the retreat, I'm not sure that they completely understood what they were coming to. After the first night, where I talked about what the Gospel was, and the hopelessness we have without it, one of the nonbelievers had had enough. As a committed Budhist, she was offended to hear such pride and arrogance. It seems like Paul said that would happen (1 Cor 1:23). She wasn't interested in participating in the teaching times anymore, however she did join us for the fun activities. On the last day, we had a wrap-up time, and she was one of the most talkative ones. She even gave me a note thanking me for helping her to understand more about God. Overall the retreat was a great success. Students asked other students for forgiveness for critical attitudes, and to hold them accountable in the future. As the semester comes to an end, we will be sending students home or to other universities to continue their studies. Please pray for us as we replace leaders, and look for how God plans to use us on the campus in the future. Hundreds of new international students come to WSU each year, and we have the wonderful opportunity of reaching them for Christ, or helping them grow in their faith. Thank you for the opportunity to serve these students, and the association churches in this ministry.
Prairie Trail Cowboy Church Light Construction/Cowboy Musicians Grace Harbor Baptist and South Broadway Baptist Churches have joined forces and are reinventing themselves as a church focusing on making “disciples of western cultured people” by going to where these gather, building relationships, and presenting the gospel. They could use help in three areas: arena events volunteers, cowboy musicians, and a worship leader. Please contact Wayne Trimmell, 316-721-4460.
GODdard’S Place
FamilyFest ~ July 10-16, 2010
Abraham Arevalo, Hispanic Church Planting Strategist
I want to share with you an email from Carlo Guarneri. Carlo is leading the Hispanic Outreach Team at First Southern Baptist Church in Hutchinson. They have been faithfully knocking on doors and building relationships with different people and this spring they had a great breakthrough in their ministry. This email is about a gathering in Carlo’s home, the 11th of April 2009: “Today 17 Mexican people came to my house about noon to visit. SEVENTEEN PEOPLE. There were several families, all of them related; brothers, sisters, cousins, parents and children. They rode the horses; we practiced some shooting with 30-30 and 30-06. We ate pizza and sandwiches together. They were so happy. Some of them are believers in Jesus, but others are not. In any case, the testimony was given. We are looking for the opportunity to talk to them more about spiritual issues. It is a matter of building a relationship with these families to bring them to the feet of Jesus. I have asked the Lord several times, why did you give this land and a house? Well, they enjoyed their time here so much, that they are planning to come back. Bryan and Judy came also and visited with them. I see this as Bryan, Judy and I received these families in my home as a team. Judy brought pizza and drinks. The Mexican families brought sandwiches and drinks. It was a wonderful blessing. It reminded me of the work my family and I did in Mexico. We led so many Mexicans to Jesus, times where we had many people at home most of the time. I pray for every one who came today, for their salvation, and I thank you Bryan and Judy for coming.” Carlo Guarneri We praise the Lord for His faithfulness and for the courage and patience of His people. Please pray for Carlo, Judy and Bryan as they continue their efforts to share the gospel with the Hispanic people in Hutchinson.
FamilyFest is a partnership with the national Woman’s Missionary Union, the Kansas/Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists, and the Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association. It is designed to give families (age six and up) a prepackaged missions experience. How You Can Participate Think about the needs in the community around your church. How could FamilyFest volunteers assist you and your church members in meeting some of these needs? These volunteers could work on anything you have a vision for: vacation Bible school, backyard Bible clubs, light construction, sport camps, survey work, etc. Perhaps some families in your church would like to travel across town to help another church. Good Neighbor Centers
By: John Stockstill
Within the past month or so, work has been completed on the ministry venture in the former Grace Baptist Church building in Goddard, located at 1001 S. Goddard Road (199th Street) known as GODdard’S Place. With help from the youth of several area churches, there were some mission service projects completed over Spring Break the week of March 16 – 20. The participating churches included Believers, Metropolitan, and Southwind Fellowship, along with a few adults for supervision and assistance. The partition walls that were in the basement have been taken down and the salvageable material was kept for future use. Also, in the basement, the tile removal process has started. Upstairs in what was the old sanctuary, the project teams were able to utilize a floor polishing machine and a sanding disc to sand off the residual carpet padding and prepare for new flooring. Outside of the building the poles that remained from the small chainlink fence were removed and progress was made in an effort to “spruce-up” the flower beds. Contact has been made with an outside mission team who is looking at putting down new carpet and painting the former sanctuary to prepare it for new ministries. With continued efforts, it is believed that GODdard’S Place will be a facility to utilize beginning in the fall of 2009 with outreach events conducted in connection to the Goddard High School. It is believed that this ministry venture can have an impact in the Goddard community and reach beyond Goddard through student and adult involvement and participation. As GODdard’S Place gains notoriety through events, it is believed that enough support can be raised to keep it open as a youth center with the vision of seeing it utilized for other purposes including possibly a Senior Center or a regular meeting place for outreaches or potential church growth efforts.
River Fest Loren Phippen, Evangelism Director
The River Festival runs from May 8th-16th. Our events will be from Thursday, May 14th to Saturday, May 16th. We will have a Team Impact type of event on Saturday. Street evangelists from around the country will be helping us all weekend during the River Festival. The mandate we have this year is to have one of our church members along side the evangelists every day. What an opportunity to get evangelism training by these seasoned street evangelists. So start praying about when you would be available to work the streets and learn a very productive way to share the Gospel. We need at least 15 people on Thursday and Friday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and all day Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you can sign up for a 2 hour block that would be great. Call Loren or Ellie at the association to sign up for a time slot. Thousands of lost people are at the River Festival every year and we need to reach out to them. We will need volunteers to help with music, the snack food station, to supervise the inflatables and to help with counseling after the power team invitation. Let’s make this the most productive festival for reaching the lost and dying in Wichita.
On April 2nd we had a meeting with most of the Good Neighbor Center’s staff. This meeting was held to introduce all of the centers and to learn of the needs of each in order to help one another. On the day of the meeting, two churches from Arkansas showed up with 3,060 pounds of food for our GNC’s. One of the churches represented had a food drive called “2009 Cans for 2009”. They used this theme to encourage people in their church to help our GNC’s. One of our GNC’s was down to just enough food for 5 families when this donation showed up. How about taking the challenge of 2009 Cans for 2009 to your church? If we had 12 churches or more in our association that did a food drive one month a year, with the goal of 2,000 plus pounds of food, this would go a long way in meeting the rapidly increasing need for food in our community.
