LA/AIA-CAH ANNOUNCEMENTS: 1. Next Meeting a. Our next meeting will be held Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 4:30pm at Cannon Design, located at 1901 Avenue of the Stars, Suite 175, Los Angeles, CA 90067. Cannon Design, HMC Architects and Ramer Architecture, will be presenting part of their current international portfolio. b. Please RSVP to Steve Tanner at the AIA / LA office if you plan to attend. c. 1.5 HSW Continuing Education Hours will be provided for attendees who sign in. 2. Committee Business a. Hal Sibley and Carlos Amato provided the monthly update and explained Steering Committee current activities and goals. b. The Committee Chairs continue soliciting ideas for upcoming presentations. PRESENTATION HIGHLIGHTS: The presentation covered the following topics: a. Hal Sibley introduced Jim Lott. Jim is responsible for health care policy development, advocacy, and association communications for hospitals serving six local Counties. Prior to his move to Los Angeles, he served a five-year stint as the president and chief executive officer of the Hospital Council of San Diego and Imperial Counties. Jim served for nine years as staff director and chief consultant to the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services of the California Legislature. He also held various administrative, policy development and advocacy positions with the Los Angeles County Health Department over a six-year period. b. HASC is a not-for-profit 501(c) (6) regional trade association comprised of hospitals and health systems, related professional associations and associate members with a common interest in improving the operating environment for hospitals and the health status of the communities they serve. HASC's mission is to serve the political, economic, informational and educational needs of hospitals, and improve the quality and accessibility of health care services. c. Jim presented a brief overview of the Healthcare Reform issues as well as Seismic, Hospital Tax Fee Proposal and a Legislative update. He explained the challenges faced by the current Administration and also touched on inflation, access to coverage, potential costs and the future of Medicare. d. A question and answer session followed the presentation. On behalf of the membership of the Los Angeles Chapter of the AIA’s Committee on Architecture for Health, we wish to express our thanks to Jim Lott, HMC Architects and Steve Tanner (AIA Membership Director, LA Office) for providing and hosting this presentation.
