Letter of Inquiry to MacArthur Foundation for Partnership in the Strategic Area of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Topic “Improvement of Maternal Health - Prevention and Treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis among Pregnant and Reproductive Age Women in Dindigul, Tamilnadu State” Nature of the Project The project inquires in to the various causes and adverse effects of bacterial vaginosis (BV) among pregnant and reproductive age women. The issue is closely associated with reproductive activities, post – menopause, hemorrhage and unsafe abortion and install an education programme to make public informed about bacterial vaginosis. Significance and Relevance of the Issue Mostly, women of reproductive age are more susceptible to the infection, but young girls, even virgins can get BV as well as post-menopausal women. Although there have been few studies on the prevalence of RTIs, including bacterial vaginosis, among females from the general population, little data on the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy are available. The proposed project will establish a platform for inquiring bacterial vaginosis which is more common among pregnant and reproductive age women than any other RTIs studied. Bacterial vaginosis is a major public-health problem among pregnant women due to its adverse effects on pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes. The impact of bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy for the causation of premature rupture of membranes, pre-term birth, and low birth-weight is well-established. In poor countries, data on RTIs, including bacterial vaginosis and their complications, are limited, resulting in substantial underestimation of the burden of these diseases. Bacterial vaginosis is often asymptomatic, and its diagnosis is inexpensive but needs technical skill. The lack of symptoms among women with bacterial vaginosis is a major constraint in its diagnosis and treatment. The theme of the project proposed is maternal mortality and morbidity and making a favourable educational and legal environment towards reducing maternal mortality.
Activities The project will address the issue through the following activities: 1. Enlightenment of the Publics This enlightenment activity aims at informing about preventive health care, child spacing, pregnancy, birth and the period thereafter, including RTI prevention. 2. IEC Campaign and Adovcacy and Counseling This activity set includes a campaign, advocacy among health care providers and provision of counseling to needy women. 3. Education and training This is an additional key initiative is the education and training of medical staffs and attendants and of members of the health service organisations who are engaged in dealing with pregnant and reproductive age women. 4. Rehabilitation and integration Successfully treated patients will be educated to act as peer educators and subsequently as “ambassadors” for a approach to pregnancy and birth attendance. How the issue relates to our organization, and why our organization is qualified to undertake the project Our organization is part of a fully fledged allopathic medical institution, so our organization is qualified to undertake this project. Geographical Area Dindigul city and rural areas in Tamil Nadu state.
