Healey, Steven

Butler
I’m taking this statement in reference to the events of August 20th, 2008, that occurred during the PRP football practice. Please describe the events of August 20, 2008, from the beginning to the end of practice as you remember them?
Healey
Okay. Uh, yeah we went in the locker room, we got dressed you know. Uh, everything’s fine you know, we went to uh, teams. Like we start off defense, offense run. After that we got a water break, and then we go to uh. We go to individuals where DV’s, and you know the linebackers and all that go. And, I went there, and after that uh, Coach Heather gave us a water break, and we went back to uh, just defense again? And, then we went to 7 on 7. After 7 on 7 we got a water break, and then after that we ran gassers. ‘Cause, everybody was walking.
Butler
Okay.
Healey
So, everybody like the D line was slacking, that’s what he said walked through..
Butler
Okay. Uh, now I’m gonna ask you some specific about it.
Healey
Okay.
Page 3 of 7 Statement: Date:
Butler
Uh, how are water breaks give uh, to the team or is it team or individual?
Healey
Uh, individual mostly but you know, we uh, we uh, the coaches they have different times of what. You know, like what drills we do and uh, individuals? But uh, we usually get our water breaks around the same time. Like 30 seconds you know, minimum away, water break. Just so the water wouldn’t be crowded.
Butler
Okay. Uh, on August 20, 2008, how many water breaks did you think you took during the practice?
Healey
Uh, say around 3.
Butler
Okay.
Healey
4, yeah.
Butler
After the last water break.
Healey
Um-hum.
Butler
What did practice consist of?
Healey
Running, we ran uh, because?
END OF TAPE ON SIDE A. BEGINNING OF TAPE ON SIDE B. Butler
Well, you answered the next one. Uh, how many gassers do you think your group ran?
Healey
Ooh…, uh, I counted 30, but uh, it may have been more. But, that’s what I remember keeping track of.
Page 4 of 7 Statement: Date:
Butler
Okay. N…, they split ‘em light, heavy correct?
Healey
Yes.
Butler
What group were you in?
Healey
I was in the small people.
Butler
Okay.
Healey
The little people.
Butler
How many gassers do you think you run before you took off your gear?
Healey
Uh, 15 maybe.
Butler
Okay. And, then after taking off the gear, how many more do you think you ran?
Healey
15.
Butler
Okay. Uh, how long do you think total that you all were running gassers?
Healey
Like time?
Butler
Um-hum.
Healey
Awe, 30 minutes.
Butler
Okay.
Healey
35 give or take.
Butler
Did you or any of your teammates ask for water breaks, or try to get water during the running of the ga…
Page 5 of 7 Statement: Date:
Healey
No, we never asked for water during water breaks. Or, he’ll make us run more, so we know, you know, don’t ask for one.
Butler
Okay. Uh, and who do you mean when you say he wouldn’t let you get?
Healey
Uh, Stinson, Stinson or any of the other coaches they’ll be like. What do you need water for, and you know, we’re just running you know. It’s all mental toughness, that’s what gassers are. That’s all it is, mental toughness. You just gotta get through it.
Butler
Uh, did you or any of your teammates become ill during the running of the gassers?
Healey
You mean besides Max and Calloway, or just anybody?
Butler
Uh, which ones do you know of, and, and.
Healey
Uh, Max..
Butler
At what point did they occur?
Healey
Uh, Ma…, Max and Calloway were really the only ones that were you know, showing that you know. They were actually dying of the gassers uh. But, nobody else, I mean everybody was tired out of breath. But, they wasn’t you know, like serious condition like real bad or anything.
Butler
Right. Who, who got sick first, Calloway or Max?
Healey
Uh, Calloway, Calloway did first, ‘cause he
Page 6 of 7 Statement: Date:
was wheezing. He wa…, I mean he ran all of his gassers hard. Like all of ‘em, and you know, he. Coach Stinson I guess wasn’t paying attention to him or something. But, then Coach Stinson noticed him like wheezing and breathing real hard. And, he was having trouble breathing. And, Stinson pulled him out. Butler
Okay.
Healey
Whenever he figured it out, ‘cause he was breathing bad.
Butler
Okay. Uhm, during any of the practices this year, have you personally seen or heard of any teammates being injured or quitting the team?
Healey
A freshman quit you know, they do all you know. Because, you know it’s high school, you don’t know if they’re up to the challenge or whatnot. But, uh, during the gassers David Engler quit, and uh, Chris Bryant quit. But, uh, Coach Stinson let them back on the team, so.
Butler
Uh, has anyone influenced you in anyway to withhold information? Or, change any of the fact that actually occurred that day?
Healey
No, no.
Butler
Okay.
Healey
We’ve been uh; we’ve been told you know tell the truth. Stinson don’t want nothing, nobody defending him anything so. You know, it’s, I’m gonna tell the truth. I’m not you know.
Butler
Okay.
Page 7 of 7 Statement: Date:
Healey
I’m not here to make Stinson look bad or.
Butler
That’s my next question.
Healey
Or, any good or anything.
Butler
Is, is the statement you gave me truthful?
Healey
Yes, sir.
Butler
Okay.
Healey
Yes, sir.
Butler
Is there anything else you wanna add, or anything that I didn’t ask you that I’m forgetting?
Healey
Uh, the gassers, they were more punishment than you know a workout. It was our fault that we had to do that. It wasn’t, you know, because Stinson just wanted to. It was our fault that we had to run. That’s about it.
Butler
Okay. Mr. Healey you got anything?
Healey, Steven
No.
Butler
This concludes the taped statement, and the time is 7:58 p.m.
